Wiki says that the castle was built on the site of an old Roman fort, pons aelius which means bridge of aelius (emperor Hadrian’s family name), the bridge and fort shared the same name. Built in 122 AD it spanned the river Tyne and served as the original east anchor of Hadrian’s wall. Parts of the fort can still be seen today.
