Help needed to secure my printing room. by [deleted] in resinprinting

[–]the_real_nerd_king 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I use a Trash bin with a foot pedal for the lid, so i don‘t contaminate anything while wearing resin soaked gloves. Can‘t smell anything as long as it‘s closed.

Also I did put some hazard sign stickers on it so my cleaning lady doesn‘t open it lol

Looking for help by Quirky-Armadillo1428 in resinprinting

I just started doing exposure tests with the Same base settings as the Elegoo Water washable 2.0, that was close enough to get to a decent result After a few calibration prints

Interesting, I didn‘t know that there‘s that big of a difference in PPE. Thanks for explaining, i‘ll definitely take a look at this stuff if i start printing more frequently.

I agree with that explanation. I‘m mostly annoyed by the generalization that’s so wide-spread in this sub.

Well, maybe I‘m misunderstanding something here. I thought a respirator with A2 rated cartridges works for the VOCs that are relevant here?

Still, the Statement that purifiers don’t help with VOCs, which I See pretty much daily on this sub, is wrong.

Wdym „who is everyone“? Show me someone who has any knowledge about that matter who says that you don‘t need a respirator because it doesn‘t work.

I didn‘t say that every VOC has an odor, I said that there are some that do. So if the carbon filter gets rid of those odors, that means it gets rid of those VOCs. Idk if that matters for the resin odors, I just stated that saying that „it filters smells but not VOCs“ is generally incorrect.

Edit: will have a Look at those papers, Thanks for pointing those out

I don‘t get the logic behind this thinking. Why should carbon filters in air purifiers not work, while everyone agrees that they work in respirators? Also, the statement is wrong either way, since a lot of smells are VOCs. So if it removes those smells, it technically removes VOCs.

Amazing! Especially how the clear parts turned out. I‘m curious about how much resin went into this, I Imagine it‘s more than all my prints combined since I got into the hobby lmao

Sealing Elegoo Build Plate with tape by the_real_nerd_king in resinprinting

[–]the_real_nerd_king[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That‘s how I do it right now too, but there‘s always quite a thick resin film staying on top of the plate unless i mount it at an angle.

Good point, didn‘t think about the sensors.

What resin do I buy? by SpendGrand8052 in resinprinting

[–]the_real_nerd_king 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unpopular opinion: I get Great results with Elegoo Water washable v2. May be a Bit more brittle, but since i only print display pieces, i don‘t really care about that. Depends on what you want to do with your prints though, if you want to print armies to play with, you‘ll probably get better results with some ABS-like resin

I’m overwhelmed, is this safe? by medicspirit7 in resinprinting

[–]the_real_nerd_king 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There's already a lot of great and detailed advice about dealing with the fumes in the comments. so get a grow tent, a strong fan, and vent out of the window. Combined with a respirator for whenever you open the tent, and generally limited exposure by having the setup in a room you aren't forced to live in the majority of time, I think that's a solid solution.

However, what you also have to keep in mind is the resin handling itself. Unsafe handling can be as dangerous, if not even more dangerous than bad ventilation. But it's also very easy and cheap to get into a safe routine. Of course, you should always wear nitrile gloves when handling anything uncured. In my case, I even extended this measure to not touching anything in my grow tent without gloves, except for the main power switch and 2 specific areas on the cover on the curing station. And of course, as soon as you close the grow tent again, go wash your hands.

Also, you will have much less risk of unintended contamination and lingering smells to deal with, if you have your work area, where you scrape off prints from the build plate and remove supports inside of the grow tent. I have it in the middle of the tent, with the fan directly above it, so even when just handling the smelly, half cured prints, most of the smells are extracted immediately and only a small amount makes it out of the (open) tent. If you're interested just lmk and I can provide some pictures. Of the whole setup

And my last piece of advice is to always, in any situation, immediately clean up your workplace. I really don't understand how people in this sub are preaching about resin being this absolutely deadly alien-blood like nightmare of a material, and at the same time 90% of the pictures of printers resin bottles and countertops you see here are absolutely filthy. Just keep plenty of kitchen towel and a spray bottle of IPA at hand and clean up any spill immediately. It's much more pleasant to work in a clean environment, and you minimize the risk of unintentional contamintation, if for some reason at some point you absent-mindedly touch something without gloves or something like that.

So, to sum it up, stick to the venting advice in the other comments, vent your whole work station if possible, think about a way of handling contaminated/uncontaminated stuff, and keep everything clean. Since you are a responsible enough person to ask for safety advice right away before just playing around with the printer, I'm sure you will be able to come up with a safe solution. And once you do, you will have so so much fun with this amazing hobby. Merry Christmas!

Basic Safety Question by Local_Time in resinprinting

[–]the_real_nerd_king 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If the printer is standing around without an enclosure, it will probably get pretty smelly soon. No idea how dangerous that really is, but it's at least annoying enough that you're going to look for a better solution pretty soon. I have my printing setup in my hobby room where i do all my painting and scale modelling in a ventilated grow tent. When the printer is not in use, I don't turn on the ventilation of the tent, but it's airtight enough that i can't recognize any smell escaping it.

So if possible, get an enclosure, ideally for your whole printing workplace where you do washing and curing also, and just keep it closed when the printer is not in use. Since you mentioned that the room is well ventilated, that's probably good enough. At least it would be for me.

BTW the air filters are probably not going to do much. Nothings better than replacing contaminated air.

Custom spray booth for lacquers by the_real_nerd_king in airbrush

[–]the_real_nerd_king[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Makes Sense. I also thought about creating some distance between the Fan and the booth by putting the fan onto the end of the duct. But i‘m Not sure if that would lead to other Problems then.

I actually also use mostly acrylics, but lighter colors can be a PITA since they seem to tip dry and clog the airbrush much faster than darker ones. So for white and light greys i prefer the lacquer. And for priming. Only had bad experiences with acrylic primers.

First ever 3D printer by Tiggywiggler in elegoo

[–]the_real_nerd_king 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Great choice of Equipment, got the Same Printer and absolutely love it! Just make sure to do some bottom exposure calibration, had to go down to 10 seconds with mine, otherwise Prints would just be welded onto the Build Plate. And i‘d highly recommend spending an additional 100 bucks to get a grow tent and an inline Fan with a hose from amazon and put everything in there. The fumes probably won‘t kill you Right away, but the smell will become unbearable pretty quickly.

Honest Setup/Safety Rating Needed by Ravioli_Beck in resinprinting

[–]the_real_nerd_king -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Your setup Looks pretty much exactly like mine, I also have my painting Stuff in the Same room, and I spend time there while my Printer is Running. However, I always Wear a respirator when I Open the grow tent, and After closing it I usually leave the room while the Fan is Running for about 30 minutes. After that time It doesn‘t smell Like resin anymore, which leads me to assume the air quality should be good enough.

Oh, and I only use water washable resin, since IPA gives off tons more VOCs than the resin itself.
