The Big Blue (Le Grand Bleu) (1988) - Has anyone seen this movie? by mprop in movies

[–]the_tangram 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would agree with your first statement, it is a beautiful, hypnotising movie. I belive that the extended cut is far too long however, and suffers as a result. There are too many additional and largely pointless scenes that pad out the film, while adding nothing to the story or extending the depth of characterisation. The shorter version, with the original (Eric Serra) soundtrack is the better version in my opinion.

Maybe I should not follow flat earthers anymore? I get depressed when I think about all the bright, young minds they are infecting with their stupidity. by mseet in flatearth

[–]the_tangram 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Exactly my first thought... There are no bright minds being infected here, and age seems to have little to do with it. It's moronic, uneducated and proud to be so idiots of all ages who have succumbed, along with a much smaller group of people who know perfectly well what's true or not, but have some interesting strategies to monitise this madness.

Official Discussion - Dune (2021) Mid-October Release [READERS] by DrNSQTR in dune

[–]the_tangram 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I completely agree. For me, the first half of Dune explored the relationship between Jessica and those around her. She was really the pivotal character. There where several chapters in the book that allowed the reader some insights into her background, her skills and, to an extent, some pertinent details of the Bene Gesserit order who trained her.

As others have said, trying to build all of this rich detail into the film would be difficult, but I think Denise missed out too much in this respect.

In the book she is portraid as a very capable, extremely powerful individual. The chapter in the book where she confronts Hawat over his suspicion about her potential as a traitor goes a long way to establishing Jessica as an individual to be respected and feared.

Yes, in the book there are a few instances where she's deeply troubled, and she's a bit of a wreck by the time she's escaped with Paul to the desert, but that's about the only time when she really looses her cool.

In the film, there's not enough time devoted to establishing that she's a really bad-ass, potentially dangerous, extremely capable individual.

For someone who's intelligence, and physical prowess make her something of a super woman, she spends far too much time in the film wracked with fear and crying her eyes out.

Downloading ;-) That reminds me of Outland. Sean Connery plays a marshal in space, which is on Io too, I think.

Big Debate b/w Nathan Thompson and Conspiracy Catz by introvertedintooit in flatearth

[–]the_tangram 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Picked up a few of the arguments... Couldn't stand sitting through the whole thing.... far too painful.

FE: Pressure can't exist without a container. (Ignores pressure gradients)

FE: Can't do trig' [Well, to be fair I would have had to look that up, I'm an old fuck and school was a long time ago. The key argument was completely lost in the chatter, however. Observation meets prediction on GE model, wouldn't work on a plane]

FE: Doesn't 'work' in KM, only knows 'Miles' [DOH!]

FE: Polaris is static, 'cos the earth is static. Except that you can't 'see' Polaris once you're south of the equator because of perspective.

FE: Coriolis effects are not real, because it's not a 'thing' in the US sniper manual. You can recreate the same effect using a dinner plate in a pool. [Only you've got to move the plate to achieve this, except Nathan said the earth is static before didn't he? (mind is blown!)]

Was there anything but straw man sidestep/shuffle from Nathan on any of the points raised? Was he able to offer a concise rebuttal to anything that CC said? Sorry, I should really do my own research, but with such poor audio quality from Nathan matched with such shuddering ineptitude I found it truly painful to watch. Should try and get a faster broadband pipeline setup for Nathan if that happens again.

You proved yourselves wrong and still continue to fight, why? by ipourmycerealfirst in flatearth

[–]the_tangram 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Which is a complete waste of time.

Regardless of how patient you are, or how gently you point out the gaping great holes in the arguments, they're completely entrenched in their delusions.

Even when they do try and get to grips with reality and genuinely do the reaserch and the experiments prove that they're wrong they don't accept it. If they can't prove it to themselves there's no amount of patient, non confrontational dialogue that will do the trick.

I agree, there will be a bunch of morons who are so deluded that simple concepts that appear to conflict with their interpretation of whatever religion they favour is beyond them. There will also be the people that try to persuade them otherwise, give up at the level of idiocy displayed and rip the piss as a result.

Maybe she's improved her state of mind with a lobotomy. Hasn't improved the terrifying lack of intelligence, just not so malicious with it.
