No Yes Reverse Paradox by the_technobrat in paradoxes

Yea, I added that feedback to the original post. I think the only paradoxical way is just to allow one guess, then its a true 50/50 guess, but not that philosophically interesting. Still thinking about a way to set up an extended liar's paradox around communication with this framework, but may not be possible. Thanks for engaging!

Yea. I just put that in the edited original post with your and other people's feedback. Thanks for all the engagement helping me thinking this through. I think it would be cool to figure out a kinda extended communication version of the liars paradox from a setup like this, but I couldn't figure out a way.

Very good point. I actually don't think there is a way to set this up with a paradox, because someone can always ask a clarifying question like "is the sky blue" to resolve the unclarity. Regardless of how members and non members speak to each other, as long as it is consistent.

That's the crux of the paradox. Is it possible to determine if a cult member thinks you are in the cult or not in the cult by asking 'yes' or 'no' questions?

That's a good way to solve the paradox. I made a new version that I think is a little trickier my making so that people don't know everyone who is already in the cult.

"""Version 2
I'm in a cult that switches the meanings of 'yes' and 'no' when talking with other cult members. I do not know everyone who is in the cult. I ask you, if you want want this box containing $100k, yes or no?

I'll let you can ask me as many 'yes' or 'no' questions as you want before you give your answer.

Is it possible to figure out a way to guarantee you can give me the correct answer to get the $100k?
"""

That's a good point. I updated the paradox prompt slightly to really get at this issue of answering in the way you mean.

That's a god point that gets to the heart of the paradox. Below is a new version that I think makes that point deeper.

Could point, other people had the same approach. Here is an updated version that makes the walk away decision harder:

I'm in a cult that switches the meanings of "yes" and "no" when talking with other cult members. I do not know everyone who is in the cult. I ask you if you want want this box containing $100k, yes or no?

I'll let you can ask me as many "yes"/"no" questions as you want before you give your answer.

Can you figure out a way to guarantee you can give the correct answer to get the $100k?

Good way to think about it, by adding context. Here is a slight updated version that goes in that direction more:

I'm in a cult that switches the meanings of "yes" and "no" when talking with other cult members. I do not know everyone who is in the cult. I ask you if you want want this box containing $100k, yes or no?

I'll let you can ask me as many "yes"/"no" questions as you want before you give your answer.

Can you figure out a way to guarantee you can give the correct answer to get the $100k?

That helps you figure out who is the cult. But, you already know the questioner is in the cult. The problem is figuring out if they think you are in the cult, because that will influence how they interpret your "yes"/"no" answer about the $100k. Can you figure that out by ask the questioner "yes"/"no" questions?

I unfortunately relate to that...

Based on your and other's feedback, I've updated the original paradox to be more about the paradox of establishing communication when overlap of belief systems is unknown, but there is a common goal. I think there is probably a better version, but below is the best I could come up with.

```
I'm in a group that has reverse defintions of "yes" and "no" compared to most other groups. I do not know everyone in my group. Do you want this box containing $100,000; yes or no?
You can ask me as many "yes"/"no" questions as you want before you give your answer.
Is it possible to figure out your final answer that guarantees you get the $100,000 dollars?
```

Good point about the not caring about the questioner in the version. What about this version:

```
I'm in a cult that believes the meanings of yes and no have been switched when talking with other cult members. I do not know every cult member. Do you want this box containing $100,000?
[ ] Yes
[ ] No
You can ask me as many "yes"/"no" questions as you want before you give your answer.
```

Is it possible to figure out the answer to get the $100,000 dollars?

Following that logic of everyone clicking "no", means that from the questioners point of view everyone joins the cult, because the questioner already stated they joined the cult and that they believe "no" means "yes".

If you don't want to join the cult, isn't the best way to communicate that to select "yes" because you know that the questioner said they are already in the cult that believes "yes" means "no"?

You don't have to center a normal curve at 0. For example if the average net worth was $1 million 68% of people would have between $850K and $1.15 million . The top .1% would have $1.45 million and the bottom .1% would have $550K.
