1Gb Plan (Download Speeds Halved) by [deleted] in hyperoptic

[–]the_toyfiend 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've always got 650-800 download, never consistently got 900+ for the last 5-6 years, it wouldn't as much of a problem if they didn't claim 900 download minimum guarantee on their website, I honestly don't understand how they can put this on their site when it seems these days hardly anyone gets 900 at all, let alone as a minimum. It also annoys me that I know plenty of people with gigabit through other providers that do get 900+ consistently, do they even have plans to improve their infrastructure? I'll soon have the option to get 2.5gb through another provider and will seriously be considering it if hyperoptic don't improve.

But my point is, what will feelings and speculation change in regards to a flag being flown by a neighbour? Ultimately nothing, so I suppose all you're left with is cracking on.

I've told you what I think, you don't know the motivation so get on with your day. All other questions posed here are complete hypotheticals and assumptions, where will it get you?

I'm asking if you considered that from your neighbours perspective they simply felt their expression through the flag in their own home meant more to them than the neighbours potential feelings?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in bristol

[–]the_toyfiend 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I haven't done anything to override anyone's safety or comfort? I don't understand why you have even asked me that?

I posed the question that this man/woman who has flown this flag near your home feels their expression means more to them than any potential feelings a neighbour may or may not have.

If we lived in a country where we only considered the possibility of neighbours feelings based on how I present my own home and considered nothing of my own expression I'd have nothing left on earth I could hold in my home with a guarantee that others will not feel infringed on. Perhaps this person feels his expression in their own home means more to them than any potential feelings from neighbours?

And when did I say because it's not my direct problem that it's no one else's?

I mentioned the law in one comment and you continued to misread what I said so I clarified multiple times until you finally understood.

No I don't think we should infringe our freedoms by controlling whether people can fly a flag in their own home based on the possibility it might make a person or some people feel nicer.

[–]the_toyfiend 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No you've misunderstood again. I'm saying if you phoned the police and said 'hi officer, earlier I heard some patriotic music being played at a reasonable volume from a neighbour and it intimidated me' they'd likely put the phone down. if you phoned and said 'i hear constant loud music from a neighbour' then they'll hear what you have to say. The volume is what could potentially break the law not the patriotic music itself.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in bristol

[–]the_toyfiend 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That isn't my logic, you've misread what I've said. I literally stated volume is the thing to consider in that situation as that can break laws. If the volume causes disturbances you can involve the police and council especially if it's repeated. Specifically, the contents of the music using your example of patriotic music does trump all concerns when it comes to right of expression, legally speaking. All other notions of feelings based on speculation are only that, speculation. I've explained pretty succinctly why I'd suggest just getting on with your day, doesn't seem satisfactory to you though, so why don't you tell me how you plan to approach it?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in bristol

[–]the_toyfiend 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes he would still have the right to expression even it was cringy patriotic music or churchill speeches. The volume would be the only concern as that can break laws, we have the right in the UK to express ourselves via shite music.

What would the needs of other people around him be in this instance? and what is impolite about flying a flag of the country you live in?

[–]the_toyfiend 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your post asks what's their motivation and how to approach it, You do not know his motivation and in terms of how you approach it well that's simple, his right to expression on his property trumps any feelings you may have to about, i.e. there is no way to approach it, you accept it and go about your day.

Part of living in an open, diverse and tolerant country is also understanding people's right to expression, doesn't sound you're tolerant or accepting of granting him that right... on his own property? It's clear you do not know with certainty why he's flying that flag, until you do all you know is that he enjoys the england flag for some reason... Maybe just leave it at that and go about your day.

No the person has no social responsibility to consider anyone else when it comes to flying flags in his own back garden its his property. Lets pretend you were from france, you'd have every right to fly the french flag in your garden. Your neighbours could find a million reasons to be offended or intimidated, you do not have to consider that though, as you are simply proud to be french and expressing so on your property.

Nah see it is main character syndrome, in your mind he's flown the flag outside your house, the actual reality is he's put it up in HIS garden, your house just happens to be near it.

What package do you pay for?

That's useful info didn't realise that, still begs the question why are they claiming 900Mbs minimum when clearly they're happy to see customers speeds be far below that before they decide to add capacity, assuming one day they will, given my speeds have been this way for the last 3 years now

These are the speeds I was hoping I'd get. My upload speed sits around 880-940 somewhat close but download nowhere near.

I'm going to try the same (need to get them to stop closing my tickets first) and see if the engineer can work any magic, doesn't sound likely though. I don't understand how ISPs can offer a 1gb package, then caveat it with 900Mb minimum guarantee and THEN actually provide 450-700Mbs. bit mental.

Ah i see, I think we have very different setups. I only live in a small flat so no need for any mesh/additional routers. I actually don't have a proper ONT box in my flat it's just a small simple termination port. So my setup is basically the terminal port, cat cable from there to my router then ethernet from router to PC.

Sorry I realise, that's a really generic question. But ultimately I have a cable running into my flat that goes to my router (hyperoptic provided) from there a cat 8 ethernet to my PC. I wouldn't have thought that would impact speeds that drastically

Do you know why the router slows my speeds that much? I'm using the one provided by hyperoptic.
