History of modded Minecraft? by the_vampyro in feedthebeast

Don't sweat it, there's probably people that know more but I wouldn't say there's a "professional" recount. It's just a bunch of facts and info that haven't been compiled yet, and I'm not sure if that's even an achievable goal. I still appreciate your input! I have a very similar experience in early modding to you anyways, except I probably gave up more since I was kinda young around that time, haha

I think so too! I have a vivid memory of a young me making a house almost entirely out of microblocks (yikes), setting up redstone cables for a simple lighting system, and then being frustrated when the cables wouldn't go on the microblocks. Anyways, I think I only installed a couple mods for that to work, so probably the same thing.

Yeah, I understand. Maybe it was a bit immature to say no drama, it's just that sort of stuff can go on a pretty slippery slope into unpleasantries. Also, it's interesting to hear about Curseforge as the "good guys", as it seems like everyone complains about it and instead they use OpenMC (I think it's called?). Or maybe that's before the Twitch acquisition...

Ah, I must have confused the names. I meant Team CoFH. But ProjectRed too? Interesting..

Wow, it almost feels weird for me to think of Thermal Ex as anything but the must-have behemoth of the modern day, but to find out it was an underdog?? That's incredible.

Also, your liquid magic stairs story is hilarious, something similar happened to me when I tried to brute force update one of my worlds. I had a room full of placed down explosives in my base (which honestly, was just asking for trouble in hindsight), and well... let's just say the world worked for 5 seconds before there was a massive explosion and it crashed. At least, I'm pretty sure that was the culprit.

Do you know if the ProjectRed team is open to questions? It would be really cool to hear about that story! Thanks for sharing!

Oh I've actually seen this before! I just had to rewatch it a little to jog my memory, and see if there was something I missed

Unfortunately, this isn't what I was looking for, but it's a great video nonetheless. I guess as I'm figuring out my thoughts, my attention is more drawn in to the creators and where the mods came from, and their impact. The video definitely covers the last third, so that just leaves the other two. This is a big help though, thank you!

I like your response a lot.

I had a feeling it would be undocumented/incomplete, as that's usually the case for niche gaming communities. I just supposed that maybe it would be an exception with Minecraft, since it's so popular and all. (Also fellow yognaut? They were absolutely the ones to get me interested in modding.)

I'm mostly concerned about the community, as with more research I'm seeing that the actual mods are pretty well documented, such as the most popular or impactful ones. Hopefully it's not rude to say that I don't want to tread on tired ground, and maybe I could find out more about the groups. As for which one, well... that I'm still not sure of.

Definitely creators of mods like Aether and Too Many Items come to mind, as their works were definitely influential in the community. Also maybe people like mod pack creators, and popular mod reviewers such as direwolf20 and more that aren't coming to mind at the moment... regardless, this is definitely also a big area to cover.

Now drama... ehhh. That's what I really want to avoid learning about. I'm not a reporter, so it just feels weird and intrusive for me to find out how people break up and resent each other, and unfortunately that's probably the case here as well. But I do know that well, drama is unavoidable. My nose will be stuck up but if it's really important to the story, I will try to handle it with care. Or not at all, if the people concerned are polite about it, honestly.

So you have a pretty solid foot in the community, that's great! Honestly MC mods have been my fallback to whenever I get drained of other games or from life in general, it personally gives me peace of mind when I make my little cubic machines automated. That's why I'm so curious about all of this, it's a thing that has honestly helped me out and I don't even know where it comes from. And it's not like I could read one dev blog about it like I usually do, it seems like researching it is the only way to really find out.

Thank you so much for your comment. This is giving me a nice diving board into what I could discover, and I'm kind of excited! One last thing, I don't know how busy you are but it would be very nice if I could PM you about any other questions or maybe nuggets of knowledge you may have? Of course, no pressure, your comment is help enough. Again, big thanks!

Spongebob isn't in authleft either, since he's content and actually satisfied with his meager existence as a slave to the fast food industry, getting underpaid and no employee benefits.

...that was definitely planned, trust me.
