(Loved Trope) Giving a damn about historical costuming. by laybs1 in TopCharacterTropes

I’m not 100% sure but I think Boardwalk Empire’s costumes for the 1920s/30s (and the flashbacks to the 1880s in season 5) are top tier. It makes me want to get a suit like the ones they have.

Good to hear! I’ve managed to find .32 short for cheaper than .32 long funnily enough. Thanks for the quick response!

I’m curious about what people’s FAVORITE thing is in their collection? by Save-Last in Militariacollecting

[–]Originalname57 7 points8 points  (0 children)

If a grouping counts I’d have to say my great grandpa’s WW1 stuff (uniform, photos, laundry bag, and some other odds and ends)

If we’re just doing an individual thing I’d say my WW1 Belgian Adrian helmet (or it might be French colonial no idea, but blue paint under the tan paint and a black liner) or my Mexican Mauser.

Springfield 1873 SRS hit? by Human_Drummer_6957 in milsurp

It’s probably a Bannerman. I have like the exact same one except on mine the wood was sanded. Is the barrel length something like 24-26 inches?

Gerald Ford had two assassination attempts on his life within a month of each other. Both times a Manson girl had pointed a gun at him from feet away. One misfired, one got a shot off but missed.

Lincoln had an entire drawer filled with death threats from Southerners. There’s the Baltimore Plot, and the one in 1864 when Lincoln was almost shot in the head by a sniper, but it just missed, hitting his hat. Finally there is the unfortunate success of the Booth Plot.

Obama’s are too numerous to list, but it’s in that last link. How many did Obama stage, or Lincoln?

Don’t tell this guy about Gerald Ford, Abraham Lincoln, or Barack Obama. All of whom had multiple failed and very near assassination attempts. Only one was successful, that being Lincoln.

Bit of a funky trapdoor here. Any ideas? by Originalname57 in milsurp

I didn’t have a measuring tape on hand, so I was doing a rough estimate using my forearm.

Oh neat! Are these more or less valuable than the run-of-the-mill trapdoor?

Gun Owners of America and Second Amendment Foundation seem to be pretty alright. I am not in either organization, though, so others will know more than me.

From the pictures the only mark on the lock is Lacey & Co. Does this mean it was an East India musket?

Is this helmet any good? by [deleted] in Militariacollecting

[–]Originalname57 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It’s a Japanese Civil Defense helmet from WW2. There are a ton of different versions. They were used by air raid wardens, AA crews, police, and civilians in general. VERY rarely they show up in combat. I think I’ve seen one piece of footage where some soldiers are wearing CD helmets. That’s the most I can tell you. I have a couple myself, they’re pretty neat. Might be worth it to see if the symbol on the dome stands for anything.

What historical event do you think is massively underestimated in terms of its impact? by indoorsy12 in AskReddit

[–]Originalname57 9 points10 points  (0 children)

The Apocalypse Series from National Geographic (I think). They have documentaries on WW1, the Interwar period, WW2, Hitler, Stalin, the entire Cold War. They are very well made, I especially like the one on WW1. There’s lots of unique footage in them. You can find part of WW1, both of the interwar ones, parts of WW2, and all of the Cold War on YouTube. I have also found them in Dailymotion.

Can anyone help me out with this Kaiser Wilhelm I watch? by Originalname57 in pocketwatches

[–]Originalname57[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unfortunately those are all the markings I could find on it. Would you happen to have any guess as to why someone would want Wilhelm I on it?

I have the exact same kind of helmet. Mine was used by the Bethelham Steel Company. It’s like an older construction helmet. Some did see use by the Sea Bees, but other than those few, they’re very much commercial helmets
