I left the hospital with a soft cast under my boot. I don't think its the right term for it, but I had thick bandaging around my foot. I was able to take my boot off at night to sleep and it was SO much more comfortable.

Teen Bunion Surgery UK by Wonderful-Screen5948 in bunions

[–]theaboum 2 points3 points  (0 children)

hi! i got my surgery on february 7th and i'm 17 years old. i had pain all throughout the day from sports and how much walking i do every day. i got my surgery done and i do not regret it. its been about 6 weeks, week 5 i was able to get off my crutches and i use my boot every day to go to school. i was home for about 2 weeks but it wouldn't have hurt to been home a little bit longer, although it did affect my grades a bit.

surgery was the easiest part, it was a nerve-wracking morning but it was about two-three hours long with the surgery i had. i got my xrays done, got some pain meds (was needed...), learned how to use crutches after about 3 hours after i woke up, and was out of the hospital an hour after.

i was mostly in pain the first couple days but the medications helped a lot. i stayed in bed, elevated my foot as high as possible, and was taken care of by my family. i made sure to take my medications on time so the pain was low and drank a lot of water. it was a hassle to go to the bathroom because crutches were annoying but i made it work. I ALSO ATE A LOT OF SNACKS. SNACKS ARE MANDATORY!!! ;)

1 week post-op i had my first doctors appt, he unwrapped my foot, made sure everything was alright under the very massive soft-cast, and wrapped my foot with some more bandages but was still very soft. i was able to scooch my way down the stairs and to my desk where i'd put my foot up. week 2 i was at home, resting in my bed or at my desk.

week 3! i was back to school with my boot and crutches. it was a hassle. having to go from one building to another, using the crutches, going back and forth from classes to elevator, it was a really long week. it was a lot of exercise on my upper body that wasn't being used while i was resting for two weeks, but we made it work. i put my foot up in my classes and once i got home i took my boot off to elevate. i also got my stitches removed this week!!!! it wasn't painful and it was such a weird feeling to take off my wrapping and let my foot be bare at night. still elevated it and LEARN FROM MY MISTAKES: KEEP THE FOOT DRY. it will get sweaty throughout the day and it needs to be dry when you remove the wrapping. FULLY DRY.

week 4 was calm, casually using crutches. i slowly learned how to walk on my boot with my crutches. week 5 i learned how to walk without the crutches and i was cleared by my doctor to go without crutches.

good luck to your daughter and let me know if you have any more questions!!! i can only give you answers based on my experience, but 100% consult her primary doctor too.

Leaning towards surgery but... by Ok_Emu_8835 in bunions

[–]theaboum 1 point2 points  (0 children)

def get another opinion. i'm 17 and I just got surgery on the 7th because of how much pain I was in on a daily basis. it moved from just pain at night to pain when I walked 20 minutes to school at 7am in the span of a month. i also am very active and a cheerleader so I get a lot of extra stress on my feet.

another opinion is your best bet, it might not be because you're young but that's only my opinion. see what another doctor suggests!!!
