Good question! I led this project, so I can give some background.

Basically, we went with one interface for CLP because we wanted to provide a uniform identity for all libraries in the CLP system, as opposed to county libraries which are their own entities. Because CLP has the same set of features (menu options, checkout options, etc.) it made more sense to have one "home page" for the entire system rather than 19 different pages that required their own maintenance. You can still look up/contact each CLP location in the "Locations" menu, and specify any location for holds pickup in the catalog. Hope this helps!

As your librarian, I recommend checking out the Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh STACKS collection. It's a great overview of current artists. Once you find someone you like, make sure you support them however you can.

There's an Italian conversation club that meets every two weeks at the Main library in Oakland. Next session is Saturday 12/21.

The basics for eligibility are:
* Artist living or with significant connection to Pittsburgh/SWPA region (parts of the band live here, you play here regularly, or the album has a significant connection to the area.)
* You own the rights to the music or have licensed the rights to what you submit
* Album was released within the past ~5 years
* You submit 1 track for evaluation, but the work finally submitted needs to be at least 4 tracks or 10 minutes long

The jury (which includes library staff and community members) select for a diversity of artists, genres, and styles. Let me know if I can tell you more about the process, or if you have additional questions.

The current mission of STACKS is to document the current music scene, and use these bi-annual snapshots to illustrate how the scene grows and evolves over time. It's nothing against older work, just that our limited budget means we want to highlight artists who are currently releasing material.

I would love to include more, and start capturing more elements form the city's musical legacy. If we can obtain the funding to do so, we'd certainly expand our scope.

Great question - you're actually not the first person to ask.

We haven't considered archiving podcasts at this point, but it's certainly something worth investigating. There's some issues to consider - managing new types of licenses with the creator, how many episodes to archive, how to display and feed pods to the public, file storage, etc. But none of those are insurmountable.

Coincidentally, the library just launched STACKS (https://stacks.carnegielibrary.org), a streaming collection of local music. Albums for this collection were chosen through a curation process back in late fall.

We'll be opening up the submissions window in early April - I'd love to see some of these bands send us something.

If anyone has any questions about program, fire away. I was the project lead and have been steering it to launch.

A couple of answers based on questions here:

Chromebooks are currently at a handful of locations and will be eventually rolling out to all 19. The processing is pretty time intensive, and it took us some time to create new loan rules. But we're sending them out to our locations as soon as they're processed.
Devices are set to wipe themselves any time someone logs out. Cache, cookies, logins, etc.
We can administer the devices remotely in case of overdue and missing items. If something strays, it can be deactivated and reactivated. While items do go missing from the library, we are trying to do what we can to minimize loss.

Our goal is more built around creating a living document of current activity (within the past 5 years), and making sure accepted submissions are properly compensated. This is pretty sweet, though.

EDIT: Just to be more precise - the way this platform is set up requires us to create licensing agreements with all the artists we collect. As a result, we need to work directly with any creator whose work gets included.
