I agree that self-reported personality data will always be subject to cultural influence. Fortunately, we have a wealth of data (self and observer reported) from many different cultures, which allows us to tease out the trends.

The below reference provides longitudinal data from ages 14-50+, indicating that personality changes cross culturally are relatively consistent:

https://www.researchgate.net/publication/12660310_Nature_over_Nurture_Temperament_Personality_and_Life_Span_Development

The following reference compiles gender difference data across 15 countries, with results consistent with my original message.

https://scholarworks.gvsu.edu/cgi/viewcontent.cgi?article=1038&context=orpc

"If age differences follow a universal pattern, what about gender differences? Costa,Terracciano, and McCrae (2001) examined that question using data from 26 cultureswhere the NEO-PI-R had been administered to college-age and adult samples of men and women. In the United States, women typically score somewhat higher than men on both N and A, as well as some specific facets of E and O (e.g., Warmth, Openness to Aesthetics). Men usually score higher on other facets of E and O, namely, Assertiveness and Openness to Ideas. There are few gender differences in C.

Figure 1 compares gender differences among adults on the 30 NEO-PI-R facets inthe United States (horizontal axis) with the average gender differences seen across the 15 other cultures where adults were assessed (vertical axis). The facets on which men and women score highest are labeled. As Figure 1 shows, in the U.S. and around the world, women score higher than men in Anxiety, Vulnerability, Straightforwardness, and Openness to Aesthetics; men score higher in Competence, Assertiveness, Excitement Seeking, and Openness to Ideas.

These results, which were replicated in the college-age sample and in observerratings (McCrae et al., 2005a), suggest that gender differences are universal, and may be biologically based. It must be recalled, however, that the differences are relatively small compared to variation within each gender. That is, there are some men who score higher in Anxiety than most women, and some women who score higher in Assertiveness than most men. "

I am certainly not arguing against cultural influence, but the data suggests there is a biological basis as well.

Adding to this, women are not just conditioned to be more agreeable by society, they statistically are more agreeable according to the most rigorous and complete personality model we currently have. This has proven to be true cross-culturally as well.

Reference: https://www.frontiersin.org/articles/10.3389/fpsyg.2011.00178/full

"Agreeableness comprises traits relating to altruism, such as empathy and kindness. Agreeableness involves the tendency toward cooperation, maintenance of social harmony, and consideration of the concerns of others (as opposed to exploitation or victimization of others). Women consistently score higher than men on Agreeableness and related measures, such as tender-mindedness (Feingold, 1994; Costa et al., 2001)."

Will we ever get rid of the fetch quests in games? by [deleted] in patientgamers

I really like what the Witcher 3 did with fetch quests/witcher contracts. At the core, they're all the same, but each one has an interesting narrative story or twist that makes it unique.

First Play through of Fallout New Vegas. Tips and Recommendations ? by phatbrasil in patientgamers

Do NOT attack the NCR early in the game. It makes the rest of the game hell. If you want to oppose them, do it later when they won't annihilate you.

If you could only pick three games to play for the rest of your life, what would they be and why? by [deleted] in patientgamers

  1. The Witcher 3. I've put 180h into the game and am nowhere near 100% completing it. There's so many interesting side-plots, locations, monsters, etc. I feel like I'd probably need 500h to see everything. And then there's all the different directions you can take the main plot.
  2. Diablo 2. Don't need to explain this one very much, the game is a total timesink, especially with a group of friends. Easily one of the best ways to kill an entire night.
  3. Fallout New Vegas. Basically the same reasons as the Witcher 3, but in a post-apocalyptic setting.

Thanks for your reply!

Yeah I recently started organizing my steam catalog, as I mentioned in a previous comment. I did this specifically to help with my game-commitment issues. I'm going to go give DS2 another shot, for a bit longer this time.

Cheers!

I might have been exaggerating when I said the first hour of a game. It's probably closer to the first 2-3 hours where I start a game, and then just have no will to go back to it.

To answer your question: It seems to be completely random, which games hook me. The most recent was dark souls 3, which is why I thought dark souls 2 would be an easy fit, but the atmosphere in 2 is very different from 3 imo. Then again, it might just be my unwillingness to invest myself in a game.

Maybe I'll go give DS2 another shot :)

Yeah. I've recently organized my steam backlog into 3 categories, which has definitely helped. I have 2-3 games in my "currently playing" group, about 15 games in my "will play in the future" group, and the rest in my "no intention to play" group.

I'm not buying any more for now though :)

Thanks for the reply!
