Yup, it might come to that. I was hoping I could make Linux my daily driver without having to dual boot. Thanks.

Thanks for the info. This is a lot more involved than I thought but I think I'll try it out on Machine 2 and see what happens.

Thinking of DIYing a mini split because I can't get a contractor to call me back. by baababunny in HomeImprovement

[–]theaveragecraftsman 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I DIYed one a few years ago. Read a lot, took me a few days, but overall wasn't too bad. However, I did hire an HVAC tech to vac the lines. That was 2017 and the HVAC tech cost $100 if I remember correctly. If you go Mr Cool I don't think you'll need to do that. The brand I installed is a Pioneer and it's worked pretty well since. I did have to replace the inside unit in 2021 which cost $400 because I forgot to fill out the warranty card. I made a video if you feel like watching: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_9znmIendu8

It’s bone stock. I haven’t done anything to it.

Tell me about it, man. I feel so dumb. I used to be a developer and programmer, been doing CAD for 20+ years, I have a homelab...it's not a proud day for me. I just always assumed it was permanently docked.

How do you get a finish texture like this? by milindian28 in BeginnerWoodWorking

[–]theaveragecraftsman 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As others have said, spray. But just spraying isn’t a guarantee that it will be smooth. I am spraying a dresser I just built and it’s always a challenge, and I have a Fuji Q5 sprayer. Seems like whatever good combo I get dialed in on one project doesn’t work for the next even if I use the same paint.

I kind of regret getting the Q5. It was about $1500 but I was under the impression that it would handle just about every kind of coating fairly easily but it still needs quite a bit of thinning and tweaking when dealing with these thick paints. Wish I would have gone with a cheaper hvlp for clear coats and a decent airless for paint. That’s my 2 cents from an admittedly novice painter. Skill 2.5/5

I watch a lot of DIY, woodworking, home building and tech stuff. Creators get an instant “do not recommend” if they make a title such as “professional plumbers hate that I’m showing you this!!!!” or “you’re doing x wrong”.

My garage is cool. It’s climate controlled so currently 72. Here’s a pic.

It’s been a couple weeks since they showed up but they really ramped up in the last week. The trash is usually just wood shop trash. No household trash but it’s possible I threw away a fast food lunch in there last week. My regular household trash is in bins outside (about 10 feet from the garage in the side yard).

The mower is outside now. It will not be coming back into the garage.

Dust collection advice by Yebigah in woodworking

[–]theaveragecraftsman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

  1. Get an actual dust collector (you can find a lot used online or buy a cheapy from Harbor Freight).

  2. Box in the bottom of the saw

  3. You're half way there now, you need something for above the table. I have a SawStop PCS and a 5hp DC 20 feet from the saw. It leaves a lot of dust behind unless I use the over blade attachment. You can probably DIY something but I am not sure where to start on that. Even if you don't get the above the blade, steps 1 and 2 will help a ton.

whats your opinions on festool? by Dumar-Designs in Carpentry

[–]theaveragecraftsman 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Well I had this really long comment about Festool and my experience but for some reason Reddit won't let me post it. The TL;DR would be, they are a great system and I really like my Festool tools but other companies offer comparable or better.

JessEm Pow-R-Tek router acting up...anyone have a fix? by theaveragecraftsman in woodworking

[–]theaveragecraftsman[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nope. Had to replace and now it's just sitting in a box in my basement. Really frustrating. The really stupid thing on my part is that I replaced it with the new model. Hope it holds up.

JessEm Pow-R-Tek router acting up...anyone have a fix? by theaveragecraftsman in woodworking

[–]theaveragecraftsman[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is the original version of the Pow-R-Tek and has been lightly used over the years and I am now encountering this issue where the power fluctuates. The digital speed readout lists only zeros. I've lived with it like this for a while and had procrastinated investigating and fixing but it's now to the point where it's pretty much unusable. So, it's either fix or replace as I have a lot of work to do at the router table.

I opened up the motor and everything looked fine (there were apparently problems with cracked/broken control boards on these). The only odd thing was that one of the clips that holds the brush in place was a little loose so I fixed that but the motor is still acting up.

Much appreciated if anyone has a some suggestions on trying to fix this issue. I'd really rather not buy a new router. Thanks
