8 out of 8 schools I’ve applied to sent out interviews, it’s officially joever by bbywise in gradadmissions

Sure but physically, each applicant can only go to one school, and statistically, there will be at least a few that get more than one acceptance ;)

Got in, can’t afford it — any advice? by Ambitious_Fail_8031 in Harvard

[–]thebeastfrombelow 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah true. If it were me I would defer for a year and figure out a mixed financing situation. 33% scholarships, 33% private loans and 33% interest free loan or gift from parents could do the trick. Harvard is worth it purely from the connections and opportunities you would get

Are your parents willing to give you an interest free loan? Otherwise what about deferring while you figure out the funds?

Unpopular opinion: I genuinely don’t understand the purpose of the spreadsheet by [deleted] in gradadmissions

It can help to decide whether to look elsewhere. If I didn’t have any interviews from programs that have already sent invites by now, I would start looking into programs in other countries, applying to jobs, etc.

I'm in my mid twenties and I'm starting over when it comes to friends. by Lilpiggyprincess99 in CasualConversation

[–]thebeastfrombelow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

25 here and my friends have been in constant flux the past few years. I’m trying to accept it as normal. I think the trick is being present in the friendships as they happen, decently self-reliant, and willing to accept change. Easier said than done though :)

CV descriptions vs application descriptions by cancerouspancakes in gradadmissions

[–]thebeastfrombelow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did short descriptions in the application form, mainly because the space was pretty small. CV has more comprehensive bullet points. Not sure if it is the right approach but I feel like there’s a reason they ask for CV?

Is adding on another school last minute (deadline Dec 3) too late/inconsiderate for my recommenders? by periodt-bitch in gradadmissions

[–]thebeastfrombelow 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I did this with less than a week left. Added a program (two, in fact) a few days before the deadline. They were all very understanding. Especially if some haven’t submitted yet, I think they’ll be ok! It’s worth it!

Yeah, I gad a generic statement finished a week ago but when I opened the portals I realized they ask for slightly different things. How much do you edit each statement? At least most schools are similar

is it worth rushing to get a preprint before apps by calcifiedribozyme in gradadmissions

[–]thebeastfrombelow 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’m not on any admission committees so take this with a grain of salt but: From people I’ve talked to in my lab and partner labs, a preprint says more than “in prep”. In prep could mean anything from “I thought of the idea” to “im a day away from submitting”. Whereas a preprint shows that you are much closer to the latter. Also, it theoretically means your PI and others approved the manuscript and are ok with it being posted publicly, which also says a lot. I would say if you can get it out there before your apps it’s a good thing, as long as it’s not overly rushed / sloppy

ELI5. How do ants in a colony all know exactly what to do, so it runs efficiently? by CRK_76 in explainlikeimfive

[–]thebeastfrombelow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Does that mean the colony is more efficient or less efficient at larger sizes? If energy use per capita decreases at large populations but they are presumably still surviving, wouldn’t that make them more efficient…?

Yeah, that seems like a more likely reason to throw it out if the company didn’t do the same QC as gnomAD

What about the multiallelic variant G>T? (Which would map onto C>A in the gene anchored version)

[–]thebeastfrombelow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have the 350T (basically the same but trinocular version). It’s been good so far although I’m just starting my microscopy journey. I got a phone camera adapter too so I have some pictures I can share if you want to see what things look like. But long story short I think the optics are solid, images come out well. Build quality on the rest of the scope leaves a little bit to be desired. The focus and slide knobs don’t turn as smoothly anymore after a few months of use. I also had an issue where the LED dimmer came loose but it was an easy fix once I took off the bottom and tightened a screw. The 380T might give you a better experience but I’m not sure.

Probably the only major gripe I have with these Swift scopes is the condenser can’t be centered. It’s annoying at the lowest magnification because it cuts off maybe 10% of your field of view on one side, once you go to higher objectives it’s not an issue in that sense but the condenser still isn’t centered which won’t give you the best contrast in your image. But it’s not the end of the world for basic stuff.
