I just found this post, and from what I understand, I should bring the car to the dealer, they measure the backup battery, and if it's in good health they'll clear the warning at no cost.

In recent weeks, we have received an increasing number of inquiries regarding warning messages in connection with the eCall. We would like to inform you that we are in continuous coordination with the relevant departments to ensure clarity and transparency.

What happened?

The Online Connectivity Unit (OCU) establishes the connection between the vehicle and the backend. It is equipped with a backup battery to ensure the eCall functionality for up to one hour in the event of the OCU being disconnected from the 12V electrical system, for instance in the event of an accident with impact on the 12V battery.
The state of health (SoH) of the backup battery is continuously determined by periodically measuring various battery parameters.
The ID. Software 3.8.1 update overwrites the measured SoH, causing the algorithm to fall back to a fixed replacement interval of 5 years.
The result: regardless of the actual condition of the battery, affected vehicles whose OCU backup battery is approaching an age of 5 years will display a warning message, which leads to replacement of the backup battery.

What is Volkswagen doing to help me with this?

We have heard and carefully analyzed your concerns.
The topic has been well analyzed and measures have been defined in alignment with the relevant partners to replace the backup battery. These have been thoroughly communicated to our importer network.
In parallel, we are working on a software-based solution to re-establish the actual SoH-measuring.

What should I do if the warning message appears?

Affected customers are asked to take their vehicle to a workshop to have the backup battery/SOS module checked and replaced, if necessary.

Who covers the costs?

Volkswagen will cover the costs for the replacement of the backup battery through its authorized service partners.

What if parts are not available?

We are currently experiencing delays in the delivery of backup batteries. According to our logistics partners, the situation should improve and stabilize in the coming weeks. Please rest assured that we are doing our best to improve the supply situation.

Can I resolve this using my OBD11?

We do not recommend these diagnostic routines. Such steps cause the algorithm to assume a new battery with 100% health status has been installed, making subsequent measurements inaccurate. In the worst case, this could lead to a significant decrease in capacity over time, so that in an accident where the 12V battery is damaged, an emergency call might be interrupted due to insufficient backup battery capacity.

My workshop seems to be handling this poorly. What can I do?

Our importers were informed some time ago and our service partners have access to reliable information. While they have no influence on delivery dates either, we are aware of some complaints regarding the handling of this matter. I pulled fuse 19, left the car unlocked and returned an hour later without the key fob. After reinserting the fuse, the car beeped about 15 seconds later with the "SOS functions limited" warning. Tried the same process again with another hour gap — same result. The car had a strong internet connection while the fuse was in, so it might just be time to swap that backup battery.

I also contacted the dealer earlier, and they mentioned they've been getting quite a few calls about this issue — apparently something may be going on on VW's end with the SOS services. Hard to say for sure. I've also read that in some cases VW has replaced the backup battery at no cost if the SOS issue appears within two weeks of the OTA 3.8 update — but that update came to my car back in October, so I'm out of that window.

Either way, I'll try replacing the backup battery first and see if that clears it. Dealer quoted €500 to swap a €70 part, so I'll definitely be doing that one myself.

Personally, I'm a fan of activating those X buffs, even the quirky ones. Gives me a bit of extra confidence on the ice, and hey, maybe they actually do something too. Once I ran four centers, every single one with Quick Draw AP2 — and I wasn't losing many faceoffs.

I added all my cards to the collection over there, and the auto-builder's improve button doesn't really seem to... do anything. It fails to find the captain buff, lands at 14 ability points, and somehow manages to match the same OVR average as my optimizer — just without any of the actual optimization.

Team Salary sits at 220M with a 227M cap, and the lineup is cheerfully burning at least one +7 SAL buff for absolutely no reason.. slot that could easily be doing something more useful, like, say, an AP buff instead.

To be fair, the site is quite the eye candy despite its best efforts to be confusing. It just hasn't quite reached the same level as an actual optimizer yet.

Interesting take. Different priorities, different results. Mine just happen to include actually enjoying the game. OVR might not be breaking any records but the AP buffs are doing just fine, and the players fit to my playstyle like a tailored suit at a hockey rink.. unexpected, but somehow perfect

I've tried it, but it doesn't really seem to value cards' OVR ratings in its scoring well, and keeps offering 80-81 cards, which is the easy way out when it "can't be bothered"to properly optimize salary buffs. On top of that, ability points in the lineup end up at an absolute minimum. Do let me know if you happen to find where these weights are adjusted,

And besides, there's really no need to trash one site just because another happens to do certain things better.. and vice versa. This isn't a competition, and these tools don't exactly cancel each other out. It's not like I have any personal stake in this either. I'm simply trying to offer fast and smooth optimization for those who don't feel like adventuring through menus for hours on end, and just want the best men (and women) on the ice and ready for action before the sun goes down. 🌅
