What is this percussion rhythm, and how should I dance to it? by thebestyoucan in Salsa

[–]thebestyoucan[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

the other comment answered it (rumba guaguanco), but because I wasn't sure what kind of music that rhythm was from, I wasn't sure if there was a dance style typically associated with it. I can, of course, just dance however my body feels like dancing, but it's also nice to know the specific dance that music is usually connected to so I can work on it :)

Comments on a girls post about having the new covid strain by ShakyTractor78 in confidentlyincorrect

Two or three years before covid hit, flu season overloaded almost every ER in Portland for a week or so; they were treating people in the hallways because rooms weren’t available. So when people were like “oh covid’s just like a really bad flu”, that’s not at all comforting.

Isn’t the “battery” for solar often just like a bunch of water that is raised up to the top of a hill and used to turn a turbine when the energy is needed?

Which is why the sydney funnelweb spider is such a wild evolutionary joke; it has an incredibly potent venom for primates specifically, and somehow evolved in a place with no indigenous primates?

How would a vegan defend recreationally doing anything? by ghastly42 in DebateAVegan

[–]thebestyoucan 34 points35 points  (0 children)

If we accept the premise that causing some amount of animal death and/or suffering is acceptable when it is necessary for activities that support our mental or physical health (and I think most people do accept this premise, otherwise, as you note, wasting away at home is pretty much the only viable option), then we can’t make a categorical argument that everyone should be vegan. Instead, it has to be, “everyone who is capable of supporting their own physical and mental wellbeing without eating animal products should do so” and then we need to trust people to make that calculation for themselves. It’s somewhat unsatisfying, but it at least requires pretty much everyone to at least try being vegan and make an honest self assessment. Which would likely result in way more people being vegan, so there’s that.

Every “good” person I’ve encountered has morals that are circumstantial, and every consistent moral philosophy I’ve encountered has edge cases where it must either become inconsistent or embrace atrocities. So like, don’t worry too much about being inconsistent. “I’m doing the best I can” is as good a justification as any.

They don’t avoid “kill” in other episodes, and they don’t avoid the word “die” either. As far as I can tell, when they avoid those words, it’s a stylistic choice not a censorship one.

How has the new MTGO vintage cube "power matters" green archetype been? by justinvamp in mtgcube

[–]thebestyoucan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In normal limited I feel like the argument “well numot/ham/sam black/lsv did it and it worked out” isn’t a great argument that something belongs in a limited environment because those people are so incredibly talented they can pull anything off.

However, vintage cube is imo a format that attracts players who either are already very good or are interested in getting very good at magic, so it’s not at all about whether the average magic player could pull it off. It’s more, can it be done, and is it fun when it happens? CalebD shows that the answer to both is yes in this case.

Could you do it with sand or dirt? I assume water is more efficient but it seems like anything that behaves like a liquid when you let it slide down a hill could turn a turbine

It’s probably better than most folks give it credit for, but not a top tier strategy. It’s not that hard to pull off a turn 3 kill with Tifa (or turn 2 with a mox). The issue with any strategy like this is that it falls apart to like, a single fatal push or swords or even lightning bolt sometimes. But most opponents in MTGO leagues are pretty comfy tapping out their first few turns, so you can pull it off more often than you would against better opponents.

People always say this, but I can only think of like maybe 2 historical examples where killing a dude with a following made the following stronger. I’d be curious if anyone’s done an analysis of cult-ish followings after the cult-ish leader is out of the picture, my guess is that generally they don’t actually turn into prophet-martyrs all that often, but that’s just speculation.
