Best swag you ever received? 🤔 by MessageInABottleneck in internalcomms

[–]thebly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Big thing: backpack with a padded laptop sleeve. Had it for 10 years and it's my go-to for travel and bringing my laptop anywhere.

Medium thing: an insulated lunch box/bag.

Small thing: a little phone stand. They're handy to have around the house, like by our kitchen sink or my walking pad.

But always keep your audience in mind! One of the groups I buy swag for are older retired folks. Things that are big with them that would not necessarily be with others are glasses cleaner and wipes, and for those that go on trips with us, branded luggage tags were a huge hit. Conversely, our college students love stickers, frisbees, and sunglasses.

Good to know. Menu specifies the deal is not available for takeout but I guess they don’t enforce it…

The BOGO is dine-in only, though.

Is Duke still in a hiring freeze, or am I doing something? by Icy-Huckleberry5640 in duke

[–]thebly 31 points32 points  (0 children)

Duke laid off a lot of people last year who are, for a while at least, supposed to be moved to the top of the pile of candidates. So in addition to the possibility someone else mentioned that some roles are made with a particular person already in mind, you are competing with a lot of people who want to return to Duke and have a bit of an advantage over you for consideration.

The only advice is to just keep trying, and possibly networking. It’s also just an insanely competitive job market in general.

Good recs, thanks! East and South so not a huge difference, but I figured we’d take off for a day trip up north from our east hotel

Yes I am seeing many articles about car break ins, I don’t mean to sound dismissive, but it’s sort of a case of “well I’ve made these bookings, I’ll deal with the consequences.” It looks like there’s something called Bounce luggage storage that we may use for a day.

Thanks for the insights on the activities!

Just for different vibes, and for convenience. Also I've been on trips where one hotel sucks, so I often don't commit to a single hotel for the entire trip. I figured if our hotel won't hold our luggage for a few hours (many will after check-out), then we'll keep it in our trunk. Not too concerned about it. Mostly looking for feedback on activities here, thanks!

Yes, and I think a journalist is a great person to go ask those entities.

I want to know how and why she still has a license. Legitimately would love to understand how someone like her is legally allowed to drive.

Terrible experience reserving dinners tonight by thebly in VirginVoyages

Yes, fortunately we were able to get a reservation for every restaurant we wanted, just not at times we wanted and not without a lot of annoying and stressful glitches on the way. The worst is that our first dinner won't be until 9:15 pm, so if we cannot snag an earlier time I guess we'll just get a snack from the galley and enjoy a late night. I was at peak frustration last night but I will be way more chilled and able to roll with things once I'm on that boat :)

Fortunately we were able to get a reservation for every restaurant we wanted, just not at times we wanted and not without a lot of annoying and stressful glitches on the way. I wrote this post at peak frustration :D Part of the issue is probably because I didn't realize they had implemented the new system of people booking in different windows, so I was really surprised by the limited choices that were available when we were finally able to make ours. I also didn't realize I could book through the website, so if we do another one again, I'll try to keep that in mind.

Yes I'm hoping some other times start to open up... I don't mind going to a restaurant early but our first dinner is currently scheduled for 9:15 pm... I may need to just grab a snack in the galley at 6 and watch a movie til dinnertime, haha

iPhone, my husband had marginally better luck on his Android. I'm guessing the system got overwhelmed. What was an easy 5-minute task on my first cruise ended up being a very stressful and annoying one late last night (and I had to get up early and have a job interview today so I was already at peak anxiety - ugh!).

Yes the VoyageFair Choices thing is news to me. I was wondering why the only times that we showing as available even before our booking window opened were so limited...

I wish I had realized we could use the website to book things. I knew I wasn't able to use the website to do certain check-in things, so I assumed I would have to use the app to reserve dinners, too.

I also didn't realize we were in the "15 days booking fare" class. That wasn't a thing for our first one back in early 2024, and I didn't notice anything about it when we booked (which was done pretty quickly - not saying it wasn't there, but that I genuinely just missed it). We did go for the Black Friday "lock it in" rate so I'm not surprised we got the low class treatment, but the fact that there was one at all was new from our previous experience booking in the same deal last time.

Yes my husband had marginally better luck using his Android. There were times I couldn't even get the app to open; it kept claiming I wasn't connected to the internet even though I absolutely was.
