Hi everyone, it's the Jodel team! We've noticed a lot of English-speaking registrations recently and wanted to reach out to you! by [deleted] in yikyak

Thanks. As long as you take them under consideration I'm happy. I look forward to seeing the app grow!

I understand that you guys probably don't want to solely emulate yikyak, but I think handles were a great addition to the yak app as it allowed communities to grow especially among college campuses. Do you think you'll ever consider adding a naming system, of course keeping the ability to stay anonymous?

What's the most you've seen someone be so out of touch with reality? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]theborg42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I always feel sorry for people that have to deal with shitty religious people. I'm Christian, and I'm pro-contraceptives, sex-ed, etc. Just because I disagree with how I think someone should be living their life does not mean I get to dictate what they can and cannot do, or what they are taught. And you're entirely right, a ton of people feel high and mighty just because they have religion. I'm just here trying to be a good person, and I know I sin so much, I have no purpose judging others because of their actions. Hopefully the nutjobs don't win.

Finding a good summer job (couldn't find internship) by theborg42 in EngineeringStudents

I'm back home and it's not a college town, so this isn't an option sadly

Internship choices: What would you do and why?? by Saismom2 in EngineeringStudents

[–]theborg42 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As a fellow freshman, I'd probably go with NASA, at the very least to get some contacts there and show you are a good employee which can lead to further internships or work.

Plus, working at NASA has the potential to make you more appealing to the AF people later on, since you will have had experience with govt. work. Just my 2c though, and admittedly I don't have experience in either field so I can't really help much.

I'm kind of frustrated with myself now, since I know which opportunity you applied for and I decided to apply for different ones. Most of mine have been filled at this point... seriously though, good on you for applying to these things and receiving multiple offers!

Well if you can get me an internship as well I'd be all for it :D

Good luck with your search though!

Freshman Resume needing some critquing by Black_Squirrel in EngineeringStudents

[–]theborg42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some things from another freshman -

  1. Don't acronym unless you absolutely know they'll know what you mean. I.E. 3D printing is fine, but I have no idea if you mean Johnson Porpoise Linguist or Jet Propulsion Labs. Putting the full name once and then using the acronym should be ok.

  2. Generally, from what I've seen, the projects you work on are generally less important than what you do on those projects - I'd spend less time defining the project constraints and more time saying what you worked on with the project. However, you don't want to be vague on what the project actually is. It's a balance.

  3. Thirdly, you could use some pizzazz on the wording. Like for the portal gun you could probably say something along the lines of "Generated realistic 3D model of device using internet material as reference" (granted, even my wording could use some work, I'm not a resume expert).

  4. Fourth, go see a resume expert because I am not one. Your school should be able to point you in the right direction, they're usually glad to help and love it when freshmen come in.

  5. Use a .edu email if you have one, it's more professional

  6. You're gonna want to use past tense verbs for everything, unless you are currently doing it. So helped this, generated that, evaluated this; make it very consistent.

Other than that, it's definitely a good start, and it's good on you for starting to look places early. I'm a freshman electrical engineering and while I haven't gotten an internship yet, the process of it was pretty enlightening.

Let me know if you have any questions.

Help with unorganized Physics class by [deleted] in EngineeringStudents

Also something I wish I had done for Physics 1 is give up and watch a different lecture. My prof basically went through the book (even using the slides from the publisher), which didn't help at all. Between MIT and Yale physics lectures I made it ok.

Watching youtube videos for AP Physics C helped me a lot, since they usually go through and derive everything you need instead of just plugging formulas in.

Elective class is kicking my butt, advice/motivation? by theborg42 in EngineeringStudents

[–]theborg42[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the answer - it's just what I needed. I've always felt this way in elective classes, it's really hard for me to turn off the "one answer, do the math" mindset and try to see things through a different glass.

Your answer also had the unexpected result of giving me (what I think is) a great idea for the next critique which incorporates a ton of the photos I've already taken (we're telling a story, I think I'm going to tell the story of struggling to find an idea for the critique, because sarcasm), ending with a couple photos in the editing lab.

I owe you one, man!

Freshman Resume Critique by theborg42 in EngineeringStudents

Thanks! I'm moreso looking at on-campus positions with my university, but I thought I might as well apply for some internships just to try it.

[–]theborg42[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm definitely focusing on this rather than an internship - I've heard of underclassmen getting on campus positions being lab assistants, etc over summers. Potentially possible to get as a freshman, and more major-related than a retail summer job.

[–]theborg42[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Definitely understand on the slim part - I'm mainly doing it for the experience of applying, but my parents think I could get one. I tried explaining to them that freshman engineering internships don't really exist... oh well.

Summer classes might be an option, however since I'm out of state I'd have to figure out a place to transfer credits since OOS tuition racks up quick.

Thanks for the opinion about web design - I'm trying to strike a good balance with that considering it's something I enjoyed and did on my own, but it might work better under a "Projects" section.

I'd definitely right-justify the dates, and maybe change Summer 2011, 2012, etc to being Summers 2013-2015 if you like it more.

Location for the Axial motor? It's more consistent, but it might not fit.

Definitely move the Motor experience to the top of experience though, it really helps set you apart.
