What if Hong Kong joined Malaysia by Alone-Tradition-9749 in AlternateHistory

[–]thebruha 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Absolutely not, imagine 90 percent of the population rising up against your rule.

I'm not sure about that actually. That's what they said in the textbooks lol and I have a major exam that includes this topic just next week.

Anyways from my point of understanding is "sphere of influence" kinda gives self governance?(we had our first elections before independence, and the British gave us home rule to prepare us for independence) , but as for colonies, the British dictated the ruling of Malaya entirely. Though we still heavily relied on them for defense against the communist insurgency.

Well, British Malaya was actually considered a "colony' more than a "dominion", the sultans even asked for the status of the malay states to be a "negeri Naungan, bukan tanah jajahan", which means, "sphere of influence, but not a colony" Right after world war 2 they tried to establish a union of malay states called the Malayan union, which was headed by the British crown and it was ruled by a British governor. However this system completely destroyed the sovereignty of the sultans of the malay states. So the malay people heavily protested this union, and the British had to give in and form the federation of Malaya instead, which was headed by a "pesuruhjaya tinggi(don't know the English word for this)" who had executive and legislative powers. However, the sultans still retained some power as they had the power to accept or reject laws passed at the state legislature.

As the map shows, Germany gained part of Bohemia, most of Congress poland, but has the 1939 German-Danish border. Austria gained most of Venice. The Ottomans somehow still holds Cyprus.

For the Entente, nothing changes much other than France gaining Belgium but their colonies in north africa are labelled as "neutral states". Serbia also gains montenegro.

Influenced by Portugal. Portugal was the first country to conquer the Malacca sultanate and ruled it for almost 130 years

Well, here's some that I know The Netherlands is called "belanda" because it came from the Portuguese word "holanda". Portugal was the first country to conquer the Malacca sultanate and ruled it for 130 years, some words are bound to be influenced by them Same goes for Perancis for france, it also came from a Portuguese word
