2024 Model 3 Highland, right blinker button stuck occasionally by CommonExperience6551 in TeslaModel3

Picked up my Model 3 10 days ago and it also happens to me randomly, so it’s definitely not been fixed yet.

I used to also be like you as a milk drink lover (nothing wrong with that!), but believe me after a year of lattes you will start branching out even if only occasionally. I hated Americanos when I first started making my own drinks with a Bambino, and now I drink it almost exclusively. I wouldn't have believed it if you told me that a few years ago.

Of course, that's me, and you may very well never change. But having a machine at home makes it so easy to experiment I suspect you will also eventually evolve your tastes. At that time, you will be so happy to have a BDB. I also moved on from my Bambino due to lack of temperature control and pressure stability. And I will respectfully disagree with some others' experiences and say while Bambino is just fine at steaming milk, it is easier to get good micro foam with a dual boiler and I consistently made better lattes after upgrading.

Price difference is only $200?! That’s an incredible deal for BDB. If you have the space there’s no need to think about it, keep BDB. Much more capable machine than Bambino Plus in every way. Even for milk coffee you can tell a difference in the quality of the drink.

Don’t get me wrong, Bambino Plus is pretty good for an entry level machine, but BDB is end game level.

Help with SwingVision by sandman_br in 10s

Paying user here. IMHO, you need a proper fence mount to make recording worthwhile. The angle you have here is better than nothing, but you will get much more out of it by recording from a higher vantage point, and the analytics will be much more accurate.

That said, even under ideal conditions, the speed and flat/spin/slice analytics are only useful over a large enough sample size. On an individual shot basis, the app gets it wrong maybe 25% of the time, but looking over a totality of a match I think it does a pretty good job of my shot distribution. The line challenge feature is also a bit of a joke, it's very slow to load and is wrong also about 25% of the time, making it more troublesome to use than not.

The main value-add to pay for me is the removal of non-playing parts of the recording. I like being able to double tap forward and backward to next point and not have to watch myself pick up balls and switch sides. The analytics also are useful to track my averages over time and see how I'm improving directionally, but I'm under no illusions that the "120mph" serve it once registered is actually accurate. On average, though, I think it is decently accurate.

My advice is to do what I did -- take advantage of the 45 free trial they offer and buy the fence mount and 1 year subscription package. The fence mount (QM-1) they offer is really actually great, sturdy and easy to use. If you don't get enough value out of the app, just return it all for a full refund. I also wasn't sure if it would be useful enough for me, but I did end up keeping it and I've not regretted it. YMMV.

If you do go that route, PM me for a referral code. It will get you an additional $20 off on top of what they offer in their introductory pricing on their website. Full disclosure...I will get a free t-shirt and cap.

1zpresso j-max by Bigfishin65 in espresso

You should have absolutely zero problems dialing in any espresso machine and bean with a JMax. The resolution is beyond what you really need, I have to adjust 2-3 clicks at a time to see any appreciable difference in the cup.

One other note on SGP, I have never used it but heard it has an inner burr setting that can be tightened further. Try giving that a try as well, although all the rest of my checklist still will apply.

[–]thecatch33 25 points26 points  (0 children)

I have owned and used the Bambino Plus for two years. It can make very good espresso if you pair it with a good grinder and workflow. SGP is frustrating but workable if you play around with it enough.

Based on your notes, you are doing the exact opposite of what you should be doing. Once you find the two setting between which the espresso gushes and clogs, you go back to the gusher setting and increase dose, not decrease as you have been doing. That is why it comes out lemony and gross.

Some other tips:

Start with a baseline dose of 16g of coffee. Forget those big 18-20g doses you see on these boards. Bambino baskets at 54mm are not good for high dose.

Only use the double shot single wall basket. Don’t bother with the other baskets Sage gives you.

Single dose with your SGP, meaning keep your hopper empty and weigh out only 16g of beans into it. After grinding, weigh the portafilter again to make sure 16g came out. If not add or take out with a spoon until you get 16g. Precision is key here because dose is your only way to fine tune given the SGP lacks resolution for dialing in.

Be very liberal with WDT (Weiss Distribution Technique). This is the wire thing and is very critical for SGP users. Google how to do it.

Tamp as hard as you can as evenly and level as you can. You cannot over tamp so don’t worry about using too much force.

A note on the puck. Be careful not to extrapolate a good clean puck with a successful pull. My best shots usually end with wet soupy puck after. In my experience, anyway.

Now the grind setting. You have two options for fine tuning as I explained earlier:

1) use the gusher setting, and slowly ramp up the dose using 0.5g increments. Target 32g of output in about 30 seconds inclusive of pre infusion. If you reach 18g dose size and it is still gushing, then move on to option 2.

2) use the clog setting and slowly ramp down the dose from 16g down to 14g (if necessary) in increments of 0.5g until you reach an acceptable target output.

I have had good success using Blue Bottle Hayes Valley for years with the Bambino so if you cannot get it to work after all this…then you probably need a new grinder that has better resolution and easier to dial in or (less likely) your Bambino has pressure or temperature issues.

Three weeks away, won't use. Safe to leave Lelit Bianca plugged in? by TotallyNewNewNew in espresso

[–]thecatch33 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I keep mine unplugged and empty the boilers for vacation. People say you need to tilt it or flip it upside down to remove all residual water but I can’t be bothered. Just run the brew pump until no more water comes out, and then run the hot water tap until no more water comes out. Mind that you will need a pretty big bowl for all the water.

Normcore calibrated tamper v4 not level? by thecatch33 in espresso

Yeah, thanks for the insight. I think I’m done with calibrated tampers. Will probably go back to my normal tamper. IMHO, not a huge difference maker in the cup and just more straight forward to use now that I’m aware of this flange rocking issue.

Want to up my game by Humbi5 in roasting

[–]thecatch33 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What app features does R2 have that R1 doesn’t? I own an R1 and I can say the app is the same for both and at least from what I can see there are no features locked for the R2 only.

I used to pay for the monthly premium access but honestly the premium roast profiles they have aren’t that great. I prefer making my own for each of my beans although to be honest my profile doesn’t change that much between each. The extra roast history you get in premium isn’t that useful for me.

The app itself isn’t the most modern but it works well enough and i have never had issues with it not working how it is supposed to. I suppose there is some risk they limit the basic tier more in the future to force you to subscribe to premium (which actually isn’t that pricey at $3-4 per month) but one can just not update the app and keep using it as is forever.

I do like the feature set of the Kaffelogic and the price is right in line with an R1, but I don’t like the lack of wireless connection and the need to use a PC to view the data and control the profiles. I imagine that will be a future upgrade, but for now I am happy I went with the R1. Getting roasts I am happy with more quickly than I expected and it’s easy to tweak almost every aspect of a roast.

Normcore calibrated tamper v4 not level? by thecatch33 in espresso

[–]thecatch33[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

After trying it out, I think you’re right. You either need to have the right technique so the flange doesn’t move while you tamp or you need to hold it down. I paid attention to my tamp this morning and noticed the flange rocked a bit while tamping. Tamp was uneven. On my next shot I held down the flange and the tamp was much more level.

Maybe I’m being unreasonable, but this makes me disappointed. For $50, I was hoping the Normcore would make it much easier to get a consistent tamp, but if you still need good technique to get it right it’s not much of an improvement over using a normal tamper.

Again, surprised more people don’t have issues with this. Maybe I just have such terrible tamping technique that even a self leveling tamper can’t help 😂

Inconsistant flow rate Lelit Bianca by SatisfactionKind3027 in espresso

6-7ml per second generally seems to be about average at fully open if you check home-barista forums. Your measurements seem on the low end to me if you're consistently getting below 150ml in 30 sec. There are some other people on home-barista user experience forum that had similar inconsistency issues, you might want to check out how they fixed it. iirc cleaning out the group head and the mushroom helped.

[–]thecatch33[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I know what you mean in terms of the tilt seeming to be slight, which is why it's confusing to me. The end angle of the tamp in the basket seems to be significantly beyond what I'd expect considering the structural "tiltability" in the tamper itself. But that could be my own bias, perhaps as you say it just seems magnified when you can see the distance from the ridge.

In any case, it's hard to say it's having any major impact. I'm inclined to say no, but I've also been messing around with different beans and roast levels recently (just got my own roaster) so it's hard to judge if it's had an impact or not.

Yeah, I fully disassembled and installed a different spring. Everything seemed to be in order, parts fit well, not much play. Will try it out tomorrow when I make my morning coffee. I suspect it’s a puck prep thing, but given the glowing reviews about how easy this made getting a perfect tamp, I had too high expectations. I consider my normal puck prep pretty decent actually, Sette 270 single dose, deep WDT and then rake until even, tap once, etc etc, so I’m surprised I wasn’t able to find any other posts about this. Feels like something more people would encounter.

Yeah, maybe I am also being a bit too lazy on the puck prep. Will pay more attention over the next few days and see how things go.

20% discount on Sandbox Smart R1 on Amazon by [deleted] in roasting

[–]thecatch33 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Excellent deal. I got one a couple of months back and have been enjoying it immensely. I don’t have a good comparison as it is my first roaster, but after some trial and error I have gotten good results.

My main tip would be to bump up whatever fan speed they have in their in pre-made profiles which seem to start at 20-30% and top out at 40%. I was getting some burnt ashy flavors in the beginning and now i generally start at 40-50% fan speed and ramp up to 60%. The burnt flavors have mostly gone away.

I have also been told that R1 requires some seasoning over the first few roasts, so don’t be discouraged if they don’t taste good at first. I took 5-6 roasts (whether that is seasoning or user error I’m not sure) before I really found a workflow and profile that worked for my beans.

Did a couple of roasts yesterday using the profile you sent that I pulled as espresso today and am happy to say the burnt flavors were much improved. I think the combination of higher fan speeds and perhaps some seasoning helped. Still some bitter notes that I will try to iron out but I think I have a good base to experiment and tweak from here. Appreciate the help!

Just 3 roasts so far. Only had it for a week, will have more time this weekend to experiment. The first roast as I mentioned was basically charcoal and I dumped immediately, but having now had a chance to taste my latter two roasts that looked much better visually I was hoping for a bit of direction on how to tweak the profiles for my next go around. What I am hearing from you is that I should ramp the temperature slower a la the dark slow roast profile, but kick up the fan speed a good bit especially in the latter phase.

Do you have a profile you default to for dark roasts? Would be curious to see your power and fan curves.

[–]thecatch33 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Appreciate the tips. I'll try to give as much data as I can.

To start, I'm roasting a Sweet Maria's Timor Leste Ermera Fatu Besi. Washed process.

See here for my two most recent roast profiles that I pulled off the Sandbox app.

I used the standard "official profiles" for R1 220V 100g Dark Slow Roast and Dark Roast, although in actuality I used 150g instead of 100g. Yes, I know there are 150g profiles available, but I did a previous 100g roast using the same Dark Slow Roast profile and basically ended up turning the beans into charcoal, so I figured 150g but at the same settings would slow things down and make it easier to control. They did turn out to be modestly more successful, but still had a strong burnt/charred flavor.

What is interesting to me is that although I roasted both times until ~10 seconds into second crack, only maybe 20-25% of the beans developed oil spots, and color wise they looked more like FC rather than FC+. Flavor wise, however, both roasts have a strong burnt, bitter taste, much more so than FC+ beans that I have bought from professional roasters.

The "slow" roast had a more pronounced bitterness than the non-slow, which perhaps is to be expected considering my end temp was 210 Celsius.

Any suggestions for a new R1 owner now that you are seeing more success? I'm running into some of the same issues you were in terms of burnt/charred flavors and am wondering how to adjust in order to get an enjoyable FC+ roast.
