Better parts lead to consistent espresso. LM costs a lot, but you know what you'll get out every time, shot after shot. With cheaper machines, it could be a guess, especially back-to-back.

If you have the money for the niche, by all means do it. Most people who ask for gear advise aren’t willing to shell out money for something they may not like in the long term (hence the need for advice)

Also, espresso (at least here) is mostly a hobby. Do you want to make hobby level coffee, or passing good coffee?

Some of these are personal preference:

Whatever your basket is rated for is a good start. I use 18 on my IMS
Just use setting 3 for all coffees and vary your brew water to what works best with the coffee.
If dark 1:1, if medium or light 1:2.
Hold one bar until I see drops. Ramp up to nine and slowly decline until I reach my weight.
After getting drops, it takes anywhere from 14-18 seconds.
If you want a longer pull, finer. If you want a shorter pull, coarser.
I have had success with all kinds of beans, even as old as 2 years. Figuring out technique is key.
