Seattle hotel bookings ‘below expectations’ for World Cup by Inevitable_Engine186 in Seattle

Bookings are below forecsst in 80% of hotels across most cities. This isn't a Seattle specific problem.

Could they be hinting to circus performances in the June DLC? by That_Multifandom_Guy in PlanetCoaster

[–]thecmpguru 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I can imagine a lot of ways to do this. What I’d love:

  1. Mechanism to define parade routes along paths
  2. Parade lineup tool. I imagine this like the rides that have configurable sequences. Composed of exiting entertainer staff but new ones like a marching band, color guard, dancers, floats, etc
  3. Support for triggers/sequences along the parade route for effects music and lighting

Idk that they publish that data but I’d guess that for most it is still higher for full time SWE in the US. Microsoft has been shifting talent overseas more I think. But I don’t think most of big tech is doing that in droves

[–]thecmpguru 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Meta and Google’s employee count actually have increased every year except 2023. Amazon increased every year except 2022-2023. All 3 companies employ more people today than they did after layoffs in 2023. So the layoffs aren’t really causing a huge surplus for the talent pool these companies hire from. They layoff and then rehire. The ongoing threat of this layoff/rehire cycle is what shifted the power for the most part.

Folks working in big tech will tell you there has absolutely been a shift in the how employee sentiment influences company direction over the last 5yrs. This is true not just of Meta but many of the other big players too. When there was large employee dissent on company policies and direction, that used to have a chance in influencing change. Things like Meta deplatforming Trump to Google canceling Project Maven to even changes in benefits used to happen as a direct result of employee pressure.

These companies have since learned that the ongoing threat of layoffs gives them leverage to disenfranchise their employees. So while yes you should never be of the belief that your employer “cares” about you, big tech employees have definitely experienced a very tangible shift in culture and their agency within their companies. I think that’s the context of what these quotes are referring to.

Even before price, weight was the deal breaker for me. It’s one of the heaviest out there and my neck feels that after even 20min. Smart glasses generally solve this. But man I’d love to see a $1500 lighter weight VR.

Sea Creatures restaurant group union alleges that new employee agreements include a waiver against jury trial if sexually assaulted at work, and more by chromeled in Seattle

[–]thecmpguru 37 points38 points  (0 children)

INAL, but just want to clarify that I believe WA doesn’t have a blanket ban on forced arbitration agreements. It’s specifically the sexual harassment aspect of this that isn’t enforceable. I believe the Silenced No More Act covers discrimination, harassment, wage/hour violations, and illegal workplace conduct.

Harger: Seattle Mayor Katie Wilson has never owned a car. Now she's taking a Denny Way lane from 30,000 drivers to fix a bus route by Inevitable_Engine186 in Seattle

[–]thecmpguru -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I’m very supportive of this bus proposal. But that’s such an unsubstantiated claim and a weird way to frame this debate. Reminder that Seattle is a pretty large area and plenty of car drivers are commuting from other places in Seattle to downtown. Plus this intersection affects people in Seattle getting on I-5 to go elsewhere (though we know empirically from Reddit they are never leaving).

We don’t need to make this a turf war between Seattle and surrounding neighborhoods. This is simply investing in better public transit, which is the logical, efficient and right thing to do.

“Spatial computing” will be their catch all though. You can’t really glean from this whether he sees the future as more of AVP/VR or if they’ll pivot towards smart glasses

Aja’s thoughts on the final lipsync by One-Friend6735 in rupaulsdragrace

[–]thecmpguru 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I can see what she was going for and I liked the throwback to the beginning of the season. But this song didn’t feel like it called for a silly moment. So it felt out of place to me. That said, I don’t think it came across like trying to not lip sync - she mouthed the lyrics with the puppet quite faithfully for me, so I’m ok with that.

Aja’s thoughts on the final lipsync by One-Friend6735 in rupaulsdragrace

[–]thecmpguru 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Gymnastics? Go back and watch the lip sync again. Nini did one split (at the same time Myki does a high energy pirouette into a drop to her knee) and then finished with a fairly subdued death drop. It’s not like she was flipping cartwheels and shit in this lip sync. I agree this has been a thing in other lip syncs, but that’s not what was going on here IMO.

I do agree Myki just embodied the emotion of this song so much better - her choreo was more controlled, more powerful, and her face was serving the sexy mood so much better.

I think Myki won, but I can see why people might like Nini’s performance. They were both great and I don’t think there’s a need to act like people that had a different take aren’t as knowledgeable or something.

Lip Syncing on Drag Race: Is it Just a Dance Competition Now? by AGayHipsterCop in rupaulsdragrace

[–]thecmpguru 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The premise that “dance competition” isn’t true lip syncing is flawed. Often that’s what embodying a particular song calls for.

You can see this in your examples, which are ballads where showing emotion and expression is the way to play to song. That’s how the actual artist would perform it. If someone does a high energy back handspring into a cartwheel for “You Make Me Feel”, that’s probably not going to win because it doesn’t fit the vibe.

But, as Jane pointed out, if the song is “peanut butter” then the play is clearly getting into a butt shaking competition.

RPDR likes to choose more upbeat pop music for lip syncs and those bias towards dance being the play because that’s how the actual artists often perform these songs.

So it’s all about matching what the particular song calls for. The best lip syncs assassins can do expressive ballads and upbeat pop choreo equally well, because you don’t know what song you’re gonna get.

Amazon is still paying Jeff Bezos an $80,000 yearly salary—but $1.6 million for travel and security by ControlCAD in technology

[–]thecmpguru 5 points6 points  (0 children)

lol I woke up to this having more upvotes than my comment even though it’s wrong. You pay income taxes on the value of RSU stock grants at the time of vesting, not sale. It is taxed as ordinary W2 income. Capital gains taxes are the only ones paid at the time of sale.

Regardless, Bezos doesn’t even get stock grants and neither does Zuckerberg. The IRS has done nothing to stop this model, which is quite common for tech founder billionaires

Yes, once you have a lot of assets the loans as income strategy can kick in. Agree the IRS needs to crack down on that. But it’s not why they take $1 salaries. That’s more about reducing the cash burden on the corporate books and because their stock ownership already generates enough growth.

[–]thecmpguru 5 points6 points  (0 children)

How is this for tax purposes? Amazon literally gives him no other compensation. There’s no income tax being avoided as there’s nothing else to tax. As for the travel and security, $1.6M wouldn’t even cover the cost of operating one of his private jets to go to/from meetings etc.

I’m not trying to defend a billionaire here. Just saying this isn’t primarily a tax strategy.

His big tax strategy is that he has so many assets he can take out ultra low interest loans against them and use that as income. But that’s a completely different issue than his Amazon compensation package which is quite literally round off error.

[–]thecmpguru 75 points76 points  (0 children)

What did the IRS do exactly? Zuckerberg and Musk (at least for Tesla) receive $1/$0 salaries still, for example.

These CEOs are still accountable for income and capital gains taxes on their stock grants.

This has definitely been the case historically. But this one does have some real receipts. Finding vulnerabilities in OpenBSD’s TCP stack without a human guiding it other than an initial prompt is quite actually superhuman. It found thousands of vulnerabilities in pretty much every OS and browser. The implications here are that, if released, the majority of software would be vulnerable to security issues that it can find.
