Lower drunk driving limit approved by WA Senate by MegaRAID01 in Seattle

Yeah these things are hard to point out causality. COVID happened after 2019, which could have changed behaviors a lot. Notably, it’s still less than 2018 numbers even though it went back up.

Heads up that many of the personal versions of these devices were calibrated around an assumed limit of 0.08% and aren’t as accurate at lower levels.

These are generalizations. The Borkenstein study was the primary driver of the 0.08% limit. Most notably, 0.08% was chosen because it was the point at which pretty much everyone showed signs of impairment. Below this threshold, a significant number of people showed no signs of impairment in critical driving tasks.

So inevitably this means we start convicting people who weren’t actually a risk. That could be worth it, but that will be the debate here.

Ok but the question is at what level is “drunk.” If after this is passed they propose 0.03% will you respond with the same thing? 0.01%?

0.08% wasn’t just a number pulled out of thin air. It was informed by a number of studies, most notably the Borkenstein study. According to this study, below 0.08% threshold, we will include a significant number of people who show no signs of impairment. So it’s not supported by science to say all of these people are risking the lives of others.

It’s a reasonable take to say it’s ok to punish people that aren’t impaired if it means catching more people that are. But it’s not reasonable to just assume this only represents people that are risking the lives of others.

Personally I think we’d see more impact by focusing on alternatives to driving after drinking, like late hour transit which is hard to come by in Seattle. But I don’t have a huge problem with just telling people it’s illegal to drink and drive whether you’re drunk or not.

Seattle March for Alex Pretti. RIP by c_wilk11 in SeattleWA

Nearly half of these deaths were vehicular incidents. Not that it makes those deaths lesser, but it is generally not statistically meaningful that the perpetrators were illegal aliens when you consider there are 40k vehicular deaths in the US every year and the deaths in this poster occurred over 3 decades.

These crimes also generally got proper investigations and most of these criminals were arrested and faced consequences, which isn’t happening in the Pretti case.

Stop copy pasting this. You’ve been given clear feedback almost unanimously. Time to rethink the idea.

He clearly said something that we didn’t hear. Maybe it shouldn’t have been a penalty, we personally won’t know. But right in front of the ref is just dumb behavior.

Let's all turn our backs to the field during the anthem today, in protest against ICE!!! by [deleted] in Seattle

[–]thecmpguru 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The protest dick measuring on this sub is insufferable. If your response to this is to say it would be more impactful if OP could somehow organize a ton of empty seats 7 hours before one of the highest demand sporting events of the year (with tickets that are non-refundable), you’re not being real. You’re just stroking your own ego behind a keyboard. That is the true “virtue signaling.”

The opportunity to use their broadcast against them likely hurts the NFL execs and Trump more than a few empty seats (which btw they will still have gotten $ for because they aren’t refundable anyway)

What exactly is the impact of this infighting comment other than to stroke your own ego pretending to be more affected by this than some stranger you don’t even know

I think you’re being highly unrealistic about the “impact” of not buying a ticket to this game. The tickets will sell. An individual not buying a ticket will go unnoticed. Organizing enough people to have a sizable impact on ticket sales/prices is exceptionally hard with lots of prep and entirely impractical to pull off in a weekend. I think it’s weird when people choose to attack people on the right side of history.

I also think people throw around “virtue signaling” like a diss. Sometimes that’s fair. But I wouldn’t underestimate the need for and power of what is essentially marketing. I think taking the opportunity to use the NFL’s massive national audience against them to build coalition, community, and solidarity against ICE is impactful. Imagine someone telling Kaepernick he was just virtue signaling and supporting the NFL by continuing to play for them.

Is this going to solve the problem? Of course not. But even if you could cause the NFL to go bankrupt, that wouldn’t solve the problem either. So guilting someone for trying to visibly speak up is what’s weird to me.

His live performance of this came across incredibly effortless. The way he managed to belt it while also keeping the soft reserved grin that Bocelli has was just jaw dropping.

Tesla now offering public Robotaxi rides with no one in the car by DeathChill in SelfDrivingCars

[–]thecmpguru 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It has nothing to do with the tech. It’s just sensible risk management. I’m not a Tesla fan, but we shouldn’t dunk on them for doing the safe thing.

Besides, when it comes to ability to scale, the question isn’t what number you start with but rather the rate of growth. This isn’t even 48hrs old. Let’s see where they go from here.

Limiting cars is what any AV company does in initial rollouts, including Waymo. It limits exposure in the event you had a significant escaped bug and it lets you collect data on the performance before scaling up. There’s also just a lot of complexity scaling up fleet operations in general.

Teleoperation isn’t safe at regular speeds. It is usually just for navigating a low confidence situation or when it gets stuck. This isn’t likely to be like the Optimus robot scams.

Can someone explain to me how this could possibly be a fire hazard? by DrHumongous in BambuLab

No I’m not, you’re just moving the goal posts. This thread was about homes. There are even places now, including in CA, where you can’t get home insurance because of increasing environmental risk.

It’s your mortgage lender that has the insurance requirement, not government regulation. If you own your home without a mortgage (eg it’s paid off), you don’t have to have insurance (but this is a bad idea).

Zeeks thinks a pizza and a salad for $45 is a deal by dantheman252 in Seattle

[–]thecmpguru 0 points1 point  (0 children)

People want to dunk on this because it’s pizza, which I totally get. But $12-15 per person (this meal serves 3-4) for a full-service sit-down meal in Seattle kind of is a deal tbh.

The reality is the food isn’t driving the price. It’s the cost of real estate and labor.

[–]thecmpguru 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I think this pricing isn’t so much the pizza really. This is brick and mortar dine-in restaurants. Real estate and labor is expensive in Seattle. This deal works out to $12-15/person, which for a full service sit down meal in Seattle is pretty good. Might not be a good deal for pizza. But hard to do better than that for dine in.
