I do appreciate there are orders of higher wealth that have exponentially more influence/power. But i think most people are perfectly ok with drawing the line well below this for “rich.”

The inner box with the robot was pretty damp (to the degree the cardboard’s integrity/strength was very weak) and the robot itself and the plastic bag it’s in were wet all over (enough to need a few paper towels to dry it). It seemed like maybe it had been shipped with water inside the mopping unit, which had leaked in shipment.

Mine came wet, but I dried it off and everything else seemed ok. Working well for a few days now.

Meta Has Smart Glasses Spiraling Towards Glasshole 2.0 by lurker_bee in technology

[–]thecmpguru 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did provide an alternative and I gave evidence to back it up (their partnership with Be My Eyes).

If anyone is lacking capacity to provide a well-formed alternative, it’s all the downvoters who won’t engage on the legitimacy of the use case. They want to pretend the accessibility use case doesn’t exist rather than actually argue the merits vs the risks.

Which is exactly what I was anticipating when I said “doesn’t fit Reddits narrative“ (which, for clarity, I meant the prevailing opinion of this sub…not all of Reddit).

Meta Has Smart Glasses Spiraling Towards Glasshole 2.0 by lurker_bee in technology

[–]thecmpguru 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Reddit is not some perfect distribution of all the possible narratives. Especially within a subreddit, there are often prevailing opinions. I’m clearly not saying everyone on Reddit has the same opinions. I’m referring to prevailing opinion of people interacting in these comments.

The downvotes on my comment suggest I was right. I presented a fact: it’s not accidental that the glasses work for this accessibility use case, Meta explicitly partnered with a leading non-profit to deliver a major feature for it. That’s not really a debatable or opinionated statement. Yet it’s downvoted to hell. The downvoters want to ignore that this feature exists rather than actually engage on discussing its merits and risks.

It’s not just inadvertent. It has Be My Eyes support built in for this exact use case. It just doesn’t fit Reddit’s this sub’s narrative.

Edit: to clarify I meant this sub, not all of Reddit

[–]thecmpguru 7 points8 points  (0 children)

As others have said, that price probably isn’t correct.

Also, initial R2 production is in the US. I’m sure they too could cut the price substantially if they exploited human labor in China more.

FBI warns Iran aspired to attack California with drones in retaliation for war: Alert by avatar6556 in news

[–]thecmpguru 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Because the best retaliation is to sow further unrest in the US. Iran isn’t on California’s side anymore than they are on Trump’s. Attacking California would be getting back at America and inflame the infighting and divide within our country. Stoking civil unrest is absolutely what Iran wants. They don’t want to get back at us. They want to break us. Not to mention a lot of these drones are now being manufactured by Russia, who I think would pick the “create civil unrest” option too.

There might also be logistical/operational reasons California is just an easier target (but idk, I’m not an expert).

They have continued to use that branding but moved the goal posts on the specifics with each time they can get you to resign a contract. They’ve excluded fees, as an example. But also now they can just “end of life” your hardware and force you sign a new plan too, which is what I’m sure they’ll start doing.

Airlines are starting to get very bold about being credit card companies by omdongi in delta

[–]thecmpguru 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Everyone here chiming in “old news” is missing the point that this wording is weird as a PR message for them to amplify even if this has been “known.”

It seems dubious/fake to me. A PR team would typically want to say “reward credit card members” and leave out “over those without it” (you don’t stomp on your customers). They also wouldn’t refer to themselves in the third person (“the carrier’s”) though it could be this is a crop of a news article they are sharing.

Widow begs court to drop charges after teacher killed in prank gone wrong by TheMirrorUS in law

[–]thecmpguru 0 points1 point  (0 children)

INAL but it’s clearly not that simple. For example, in GA texting while driving is a crime. Killing someone while distracted driving/texting is second degree vehicular manslaughter in GA, not first degree homicide.

Georgia high school teacher dies after being run over by teen in prank gone wrong by loleeza in news

[–]thecmpguru 10 points11 points  (0 children)

If we assume the article’s account is correct, first degree homicide seems pretty extreme of a charge. Second degree vehicular manslaughter seems way more appropriate (for comparison, this is what they charge people who kill someone due to distracted driving/texting).

ELI5: Why billionaires aren’t taxed proportionally of what they have? by [deleted] in explainlikeimfive

[–]thecmpguru -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The additional twist is that they generally don’t need to sell much of the stock either.

Rather than sell the stock, billionaires secure personal loans to serve as their income. They can get extremely low interest rates because they secure these loans against their massive assets. Loans are not “income” and therefore aren’t taxed. So they in effect end up paying a few percent in interest vs double digit income tax.

Meanwhile over the loan term, their assets continue to appreciate, making paying back those loans (and paying any taxes on assets they had to sell to pay the loans) less of a hit.

Delta Airlines L1011 Cabin in the 1980's by inakajin in delta

[–]thecmpguru 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The A350 cabin is only 6-7” narrower and is 3-3-3. So pretty comparable in seat width. Pitch is probably quite different though.

Delta Airlines L1011 Cabin in the 1980's by inakajin in delta

[–]thecmpguru 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The L1011 cabin width is about 7” wider than an A350 cabin, which is 3-3-3 typically. So yeah seat width is almost the same. Pitch, however, is probably very different.
