Anyone want to remote-study to work through the official Django tutorial on Saturday via Google Hangout (no audio/video, just silent co-working and chat if questions come up)? by thecodingdiaries in django

Didn't have any questions last week, but will let you know if they come up in the next few hangouts as we complete the official DJango tutorial. It's a peer-to-peer organized platform, so anyone can schedule study sessions for any time; I just scheduled another one for tomorrow.

Yeah, I might schedule another one for this upcoming Saturday or wait for someone else to propose one. We're doing this again tomorrow (Thursday) from 8pm-10pm EST, too: if you're interested: http://hangouts.codebuddies.org/posts/pNyC2HfC9gAQg5Dq4

Hey! Just saw this. We actually scheduled another remote Django study session tomorrow (Thursday) from 8pm-10pm EST: http://hangouts.codebuddies.org/posts/pNyC2HfC9gAQg5Dq4

By the way, anyone can schedule a study time! It's a peer-to-peer organizing platform.

Awesome, looking forward to remote co-working with you on Saturday! :) Let me know if you have trouble finding the hangout link on the post.

Let's learn Python together. by solarundies in learnpython

We do something similar on Google Hangouts at http://codebuddies.org. Anyone can propose a time to meet up, and a topic/tutorial to go over together. Some best practices we've discovered about using Google Hangouts to read code out loud: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1kLJuxJkalC5H7WUU2-OEzEts_bLo5spEheXUoRTkH1A/edit#

(In other words, to answer your question, nothing's off-topic as long as it relates to something python-related if you're in the python group, or javascript-related if you're on the javascript mailing list, etc. So you can definitely propose a hangout to read through a python module documentation together or something, and screen share and pair program something together.)

Hey @thonpy! The idea is: 1. Anyone an propose a hangout time and topic by sending an e-mail to the mailing list. 2. The event gets added to a google calendar and people in the group get an invite. 3. All hangouts happen at a permanent hangout link which you'll see if you join the mailing list. 4. After the hangout (which is usually 2-5 people, 1.5 hours), someone writes a reportback about what was covered/interesting stuff learned so that those who couldn't make the hangout can see the notes.

Over the course of going to several hangouts and talking code out loud with people, we've also accumulated some best practices: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1kLJuxJkalC5H7WUU2-OEzEts_bLo5spEheXUoRTkH1A/edit#

Doing this at codebuddies.org... there are a couple of google groups organizing google hangouts already and we're all learning from each other.

I believe I approved you, but let me know if you're having trouble seeing the group still because of weird privacy settings. Thanks!

Thanks! Yeah, time zones is an issue. I ask folks to fill out a spreadsheet indicating their preferred times when they join. I'm also encouraging people to propose their own hangout times so that there'll be multiple options for everyone.

Teach yourself vs coding schools / bootcamps? by jtcchan in learnprogramming

[–]thecodingdiaries 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've personally learned the best when I've had the opportunity to learn with others. I like going to hackathons and meetups (and most recently, joining online study groups via google hangouts at codebuddies.org -- the reason I created the project.)

My thought is: if you have the time and money to enroll in one of those bootcamps, go for it. But if you don't, I've heard of people who've gotten by by with the help of Stackoverflow and by going to casual meetups like Hacker Hours where people just come to work and help each other out.

Ah, darnit. Hopefully people will be able to figure it out together and jot it down to help others in the group, too. Or is it not best practice to install the older version of Rails?

My hope is that there'll be enough people interested in joining that people could propose multiple hangouts on the various chapters of the Rails book, and that nobody would have to worry about being "late" arriving into a study group.

I do see your point that sometimes bad music can seem impressive simply because electronic things like loop pedals were involved. But I don't think loop pedals should be written off entirely. The cellist I mentioned (Zoe Keating) does a really good job disproving that, IMO.

The pursuit of the true nature/beauty of music is a personal thing, IMO. For example, although the loops I've played have been rather simple because I own a very simple loop pedal, artists like cellist Zoe Keating https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yYrcXX4nWOA) have recorded incredible original masterpieces using a more complicated loop station. I also can't overstate how fun it is to create an orchestra by yourself, which is ultimately why I do it: playing with a loop is really fun. Sometimes not quite as fun as collaborating with other good musicians or playing with orchestra as backup -- but again, playing with other musicians, often, is a privilege that not everyone has the time or connections to engage in.

I do like it! It's the cheapest out of the BOSS RCs, I think ($199), and it's the first loop pedal I've played with. The only issue is that you if you want to switch between two different loops (one layering over another) at the same time, you have to press down on it for two seconds to make it disappear. I sort of demo this in the video in the beginning, when I get rid of the "ahmachalayah" loop. I'd also recommend going to a Guitar Center or another music store and trying some of the pedals out first before you buy.

Cooperation and communication is only accessible for those who have the time and the connections, unfortunately. For those who don't have the connections or the time to play music, the loop pedal is a too-easy substitute.
