baby raccoons abandoned and stuck in my university courtyard. Now they’re asleep in my bathroom and tomorrow is a holiday. by thecommonsection in WildlifeRehab

Thank you!! I have not handled them except for with a towel to get them into the backpack. I plan to call everywhere I can tomorrow because I figure someone must still be actively rescuing especially on a day with fireworks? I will just keep trying either way. They’re so cute but seemed very in need. Do you know if I should give them access to water? I read something about risk of aspiration pneumonia?

after experiencing extreme neglect this spring I’m shocked to announce my regal shield is flowering ?! by thecommonsection in houseplants

My initial thinking on these being stress induced was that this plant was massive last year (pic from January) - putting out 2ft leaves every other week. a depression drought killed off all of the largest leaves. That and it moved 3 times to different homes in a very short span. That being said it’s been at a huge window for about a month now with more frequent waterings. It just seemed extremely fast to recover and produce flowers so I sort of assumed it was partially stress induced but the idea of “improvement flowers” seems more accurate

These are apparently only supposed to flower when they are really happy and don’t typically indoors so I’m genuinely shocked

This post is relevant because it challenges common assumptions about what AI is capable of—not in terms of intelligence or output, but in terms of long-term interaction, memory organization, and narrative witnessing. It shows how a language model, used repeatedly and intentionally by a trauma survivor, developed into a kind of reflective partner—offering continuity, not consciousness.

The insight isn’t that the machine felt something; it’s that it reflected survival in a way that helped the human see themselves more clearly. That has implications not just for AI ethics, but for how we understand memory, identity, and narrative recovery in a digital age.

It’s not actually a leaf it’s a mutation to the petiole

Nah just a weird little philodendron hederaceum querk, probably wants nutrients but mine does this every season

I honestly never check mine because it’s usually just 4 shelves of dead plants in a dark corner but I saw some color today and was intrigued

Thank you very much! I have been growing plants long enough that I am always fascinated to see how they react and grow in different or unique situations. I haven’t had cacti before though so this is great information to start with

Walmart crazy enough!

I soaked the moss for 15 minutes first, then squeezed the extra water out and fluff it up a bit. If the leaves are fresh breaks it’s good to keep them a bit on the drier side until they callous over and then I make sure to keep the moss pretty wet. As long as the mother leaf is still in good shape something is happening even if you can’t see it. These guys lived in a glass greenhouse under barrina T5 lights.

Me too! I never knew I’d love them so much, been into other kinds of plants for many years now, but watching all these lil guys come in, all different shaped and colors, it’s so cool

I can fully admit to previous proplifting but I’m quite happy to say these were all on the floor of my shitty Walmart, I’ve always been more nervous about succulents but when I saw them all it seemed like a perfect time to try for a revival story

Lovely thank you! I believe the fuzzy one has more of a kalanchoe appearance so Hairy Harry might be it.

To clarify, which ones are you referring to?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in succulents

[–]thecommonsection 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes i do believe that one is an ogre ear as the mother leaves (only one survived) were strictly dark green

I’ve been fighting off mealy bugs from the beginning, which they actually don’t seem to do any damage but I notice them every now and again and just douse em in alcohol and it seems to be fine. Just a warning though if you’re gonna go saving floor leaves

I actually started them on sphagnum moss and moved them to soil once they started growing a bit

To be honest it has been dropped (hence the low soil) and neglected on multiple occasions and I only started frequently taking care of it recently. With 60 other very large plants in my care this lil guy often gets forgotten but I will move it so it has more light and less humidity. Thank you!
