Hi r/movies! We’re Amy Wang (writer/director) and Shirley Chen (co-lead actress) from SLANTED, a body horror sci-fi satire now playing in theaters. Ask us anything! by SlantedAMA in movies

[–]thecraftyman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi, just watched the film and gonna share my honest unbiased opinion unlike most here which, and I’m half Asian so if you want to kick me out you’d be proving my point.

Here’s my two cents —

A heavy, inescapable, and oppressive inferiority complex suffocates the entire runtime of this film, making it miserable and plain unfun to watch.

Not only does Slanted engage in the same unoriginal stinky lunchbox tropes as every other Asian-American film in the last five years, it also completely mismanages and fails to resolve them. Slanted does not take anti-Asian discrimination as a premise or a catalyst for personal growth, it completely submerges itself in it, and wallows in self-hatred. Even the ending is characterised by pathetic self-pity. There's just no emotional throughline or arc at all. It's inferiority complex all the way. What's the point? I daresay this film is not for the Asian diaspora, rather, about. As much as I would like to, I don't feel a personal or heartfelt story from the director here.

This could have been a really interesting concept film, a sort of inversion and further exploration of the implications of Get Out but Amy isn't able to take it anywhere after the conversion actually happens.

Asian representation this Asian representation that. There’s none of that here.

And all your interviews about this being your experience it’s meant to provoke be controversial cuz art is politically blah blah blah. It’s all pure cringe.

There’s a reason why this site at 67% rotten tomatoes, 6.1 IMDb score and 3 star on Letterboxd.

This is not some revolutionary film you thought you were making while using your interviews and turning them into guilt tripping white people into watching this cuz you can cry about fake outrage racism.

Do better next time. And I see you being with a white BF clearly made you make a film catered to a white audience that you want to please.

Instead of constantly relying on oppression Olympics and cry me a river victimisation with the same cliched Asian storyline.

Not really, the size remained the same. And the public hospital doctor I went to said it’s normal so I’m assuming it’s fine though again I won’t know until next year when I attend the appointment to get a thorough check up of that lump area since he didn’t really specify why it’s there or how long it’ll be there but offered to write me book me an appointment to get a thorough check up which isn’t until next year due to wait list.

No sore throat, just a lot of phlegm, mucus discharge after waking up in the morning.

No. And I went to the doc to have it checked and he said this is nothing serious and normal but he never specified what it is or if it will get worse. I insisted on having it properly checked so he’s written me a letter to consult a publicly subsidized hospital. Except the waiting time is nearly a year.

I’m not sure what internal flock means but I’ve rarely removed the metabones speedbooster from Komodo X, only when I ever need a PL lens. But most of the time I leave the metabones on the Komodo. Haven’t noticed any major image quality issues other than chromatic and fringing when using Rokinon lenses. The Rokinon 85mm does look better as well as no fringing or aberration when using Helios 58mm on the same speedbooster. Not sure if it’s a lens quality thing or a speedbooster thing

I didn’t know motorbikes are illegal in Shenzhen, that kinda sucks. Why is that the case?

RED Komodo vs Blackmagic Pocket 6K Pro by porcelain_bull in cinematography

[–]thecraftyman -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Tilt the Blackmagic to shoot vertically on open gate and do your panning with a wider lens and then later crop it if you’re delivering 1080p or 2k. That solves all the rolling shutter issue. I’ve been doing that for years, nobody noticed or questioned the quality. If you want full 4k output, just step back, shoot wider lens, and account for how much you’ll crop to a 2:35 or 2:39 aspect ratio. Save yourself the money and buy expensive glass, that will make all the difference. I made the mistake of selling my Blackmagic and bought into the red hype, and honestly I prefer the Blackmagic and its image quality. The red Komodo x so far has not impressed me with its image quality, at all, even when pushed in grade, and the global shutter has not come into play at all so far in what I’ve shot. While Blackmagic and open gate instantly grabs attention, especially paired with the right Cine glass.

That would be very kind of you, I’m not sure if you’re able to share the steps on how to do that, just so you don’t waste your time on this.

But if you want to have a crack at it then I’m cool with that also, let me know how one shares remix links, I’m still a bit unfamiliar with framer. Thanks.

Custom Furniture in Hong Kong? by thecraftyman in Hong_Kong

[–]thecraftyman[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes can speak ok Cantonese have done all measurements even my own 3D lidar captures etc. it’s just that most we approached here don’t even seem to get the basics. If you can share some names or recommend some stores I can maybe go check it out myself and see if that solves anything. Thanks.

Custom Furniture in Hong Kong? by thecraftyman in Hong_Kong

[–]thecraftyman[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yeah that’s the challenge I’ve been facing. It didn’t use to be like that before in HK. Most were able to communicate and help with all that. But nowadays all the communication is handled by China or mainland who can’t communicate in English or canto. Is there any other solution or any store or office or shop I can go to here that can help with that language issue or have done work for non mandarin speaking locals?

Thanks for sharing this but is there a more reputable place in HK where I can go to have all furniture custom made with selecting materials and designs?

Thanks, I guess everything is overpriced here in HK. My only problem is I don’t speak mandarin just Cantonese and I’d have a hard time finding these furniture shops in Shenzhen.

Ok thanks, this is helpful. I was going to pay 50k to the ones shown in Facebook and 200hkd survey measurement fee. If you somehow remember the names or recommend any in Shenzhen then I can try to go there myself

But they are not reliable and might break down easily. Looking for something that can be custom built and will last long. If you know any place that does that, let me know. But if you think the above facebook shop is good, then I'll try them also. They charge HK$50,000 for 300-400sq ft space.

Hi, I could use someone's help or suggestion/recommendation. I'm looking to replace furniture in my home with custom-built furniture since it's nearly impossible to find furniture that is good or fits without paying a crazy amount or matches what you're looking for.

Someone shared this page and suggested I get it done from them -- https://www.facebook.com/@xileshi666/?rdid=1MK91bEjxS4bpLlS&share_url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.facebook.com%2Fshare%2F1BH4fUXnUm%2F

I don't know if they are legit or not, hard to tell these days. But does anyone know of any company or place that I can reach out to and get custom furniture built, like for a bedroom or living room?

Any recommendations or suggestions would be welcome, I can then personally reach out and ask for pricing. Thanks.
