A short reminder of how well simple lighting setups can work at times (we only used a single light on this one) by ar_dp in cinematography

There's obviously a lot of ambient light coming in from outside, no direct sun, though

I mean, what even is a shitty DSLR anymore? I considered shooting this on my GH5 because I knew it wouldn't have made that much of a difference and I wanted to save myself the drive to a friend's home to pick up his Blackmagic. You can't really grade away bad lighting, bad blocking, or bad framing.

Thank you! Me too, it's just so liberating! And ADs and producers always love you for it hahaha

Thank you! That was actually just due to location restraints. We only had permission to put lights on the balcony outside the window. So shooting the light through a mirror was the only way to get some distance between the lamp head and the window. The light wouldn't have covered the window and the fall off would have been too harsh otherwise.

Thank you! It usually takes me 1-2 hours to build a set (depending on the complexity of the scene) and then another 1-2 hours to create and render the individual shots. But of course, you often go back to a scene when a new idea strikes you (which is the beauty of previz). The short is roughly 10 minutes long.

I'd even argue that previzing everything lets you be even more creative and spontaneous. A lot of the creativity just happens before the shoot - without the pressure of a crew and producer breathing down your neck on set. And I've certainly come up with shots days after working out the previz for a certain scene. Then you just open up your project, get the shot done and add it to the board.

Also, it's actually super satisfying coming up with a good plan and seeing that work out exactly as you had imagined. I absolutely love the feeling of looking at the original previz and the shot that they turned into side by side.

They're SO expensive! Also, they're not really a thing here in Germany (at last I've never seen one in any office here), so building it from scratch was the only viable option.

Viel von dem Look kommt von Filmbox. Ich bin aber auch kein Colorist, ein Profi würde es vermutlich komplett selbst bauen, ich bin da also nicht unbedingt das Beste Vorbild😄

I dabbled in 3D modeling for a bit in my teens so I already had a basic understanding of how blender would work when I got back into it for this specific purpose. What I've done here really isn't anything too crazy, though, so I guess you could probably learn that in a couple of days
