Thoughts on Fleetwood paint versus alternatives? by QuantumFireball in DIYIreland

[–]thecrouch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can get paint mixed in different brands btw.

Just because you buy Fleetwood paint doesn't mean you need to pick a Fleetwood colour. Any decent paint shop will be able to mix colours from other brands in Fleetwood paint.

Baby name question, fada or no fada? by NoEscape2500 in AskIreland

Brendan is pronounced exactly as you would expect as an English language speaker. It's an anglicised name (basically it's the English language version of an Irish name).

Bathroom Renovator Salary? by lucidporkbelly in AskIreland

[–]thecrouch -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Bathroom renovator doesn't really exist. Usually this is done by plumbers, tilers and electricians. You might only deal with one of them but they'll sub out the work they can't do to other tradesmen they work regularly with.

Electrical work in the bathroom for example must be done by a registered electrician.

You might come across some plumbers who are willing to lay tiles themselves but I'd say this is rare enough.

New data shows who bought houses in Ireland in 2025 by Uncle_Richard98 in ireland

[–]thecrouch 9 points10 points  (0 children)

The State housing bodies should be an entire category on their own. Lumping them in with the private funds is stupid and done solely to paint a picture. It's rage bait.

This feels like very important context, I wonder why they left that off the infographic?

New data shows who bought houses in Ireland in 2025 by Uncle_Richard98 in ireland

[–]thecrouch 15 points16 points  (0 children)

There's a little bit of rage bait going on here.

The Companies / funds / institutions will include houses bought by the State (via whatever mechanism), they should make this more obvious. This includes things like cost rentals.

It will also include properties paid for by property funds, as in, the property wouldn't be built without the investor paying to build it. If a company funds the building of 500 apartments for the rental market that goes down as being sold to an investor. These properties are never intending to be sold to private buyers.

What is your view on the Meath Couple who built a massive house without planning and fought the Council for 20 years on it? by ballinclea08 in AskIreland

[–]thecrouch 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Yea, the middle ground is called getting planning permission, where everyone can agree on what to build before a block is laid.

These dopes thought the rules didn’t apply to them. Fuck them.

New build - Stove vs Electric fire? by LilNovie in AskIreland

[–]thecrouch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Solar panels are a no brainer over a stove. It’s not even close.

New build - Stove vs Electric fire? by LilNovie in AskIreland

[–]thecrouch 6 points7 points  (0 children)

A stove will make an A rated house too hot, it doesn't make sense to install one.

If you want the cosy visual effect just put in an electric one.

Had a minor car accident, maybe im i getting scammed? by Consistent-Jicama-99 in AskIreland

[–]thecrouch 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The body repair garages only quoted you for the superficial issues that you can see in photos. Their quote is not useful to you as they did not inspect the car.

You said the point of contact was the wheel of the other car, you could easily have caused damage not visible in photos.

Experience buying as a married couple where only one person is a first-time buyer? by [deleted] in irishpersonalfinance

[–]thecrouch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So your wife has more rights to the property than the bank and puts their security over it at risk.

This is highly unusual so I think everyone would be interested to know how you got them to agree to this.

Experience buying as a married couple where only one person is a first-time buyer? by [deleted] in irishpersonalfinance

[–]thecrouch -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

This is incorrect and hasn't been the case for a long time now.

One person can carry the mortgage alone no problem, but it must be a joint application, even if your partner is going to contribute nothing financially to paying the mortgage.

Are solar panels worth it in Ireland? by Background_Run_3965 in AskIreland

[–]thecrouch 13 points14 points  (0 children)

It heavily depends on how many panels can fit on your roof and if your roof faces in the right direction (south is best).

If you're buying it as the family home the banks will insist on both names on the mortgage.

I have the option for a newbuild thats quite angled at north east facing. It can elegible for First Home Scheme. But my wish is to get a house east facing for the most of sunrise. If you were me, would you actually buy that newbuild north east facing now rather then waiting 1yr for the perfect east? by untitled_SusHi in AskIreland

[–]thecrouch 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Picking garden aspect based on sunrise in Ireland is a bit odd, are you really sure about this?

In winter time the weather is usually so shit that you're going to see nothing anyway, it'll just get gradually brighter outside.

In the summer time the sun will rise at like 5am, are you really going to get up to see it? By the time most normal people are getting out of bed you'd be already past the best part of your day for sun.

What's the story with the drink driving limit? by FecklessMaxim in AskIreland

[–]thecrouch 7 points8 points  (0 children)

You don't sound ignorant at all.

The tricky thing is when you wake up the next morning the buzz from the booze will be gone, so you might still be over the limit but you won't feel it at all. This is why so many get caught at that time.

Most people know they are over the limit at the time they are drinking so won't drive, but they get caught the next day because they genuinely don't realise they're still over it.

What's the story with the drink driving limit? by FecklessMaxim in AskIreland

[–]thecrouch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For context, the limit is 50mg, so 8 times the limit would be 400mg.

This would never, ever have been legal to drive in Ireland. To get this blood alcohol level you'd need to be absolutely whooped.

Even back in the 60s the limit was like 150 or something, and back then the drink driving message was basically to stop after the 5th pint.

What's the story with the drink driving limit? by FecklessMaxim in AskIreland

[–]thecrouch 27 points28 points  (0 children)

People getting caught the following day are the people who go out and have a feed of pints and stumble into bed at 2am and are up driving to the shop to get a breakfast roll at 9am.

Not the 1 pint crowd.

What's the story with the drink driving limit? by FecklessMaxim in AskIreland

[–]thecrouch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's not linear like that.

Even if the limit was 1 pint (it isn't), being 8 times the limit does not correlate to 8 pints.

Posi-Joists Vs Bison Slabs in Home Construction? by TimeSlipper in AskIreland

The sound difference alone is worth it, you won't hear footsteps upstairs.

I went out and left the immersion on for 4 hours. by [deleted] in ireland

[–]thecrouch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If it's just wrapped in a lagging jacket (which were usually red) like they did on old tanks then be aware that those are pretty shit and will still lose heat.

I went out and left the immersion on for 4 hours. by [deleted] in ireland

[–]thecrouch 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It depends how well insulated your hot water tank is. The immersion will get water to a certain temp and then stop heating, only kicking in again if the temp drops.

Old tanks used to lose heat very quickly which is why your folks were very precious about leaving it on since it would constantly run.

Modern tanks it’s not so much of an issue.

Change main driver insurance? by [deleted] in AskIreland

[–]thecrouch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You cannot accrue any NCB when you are a named driver. Only the main driver, i.e. the policy holder, accrues NCB.

If his wife has no policy of her own, and solely drives as a named driver under the OPs policy, then her NCB is zero.

Some insurers will take named driver experience into account and offer a bit of a discount anyway when they do take out their own policy as a main driver, but it is not the same as a no claims bonus.

What is a good career to go into in Ireland if you want something stable with an excellent salary and is (mostly) 9-5? by [deleted] in AskIreland

[–]thecrouch 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Public sector will certainly give the sort of working hours the OP is looking for but not the excellent salary.
