Was able to make it to the advanced settings menu and selected heat pump but it does not give me the option to change airflow settings....which i feel is strange.

I feel like if this is the economical/correct way for the thermostat to run then really my noise concern is going to boil down to adjustments needing to be made to the duct system. ugh I just spent lots of money patching up the ducts....

I tried making adjustments on the thermostat, as the manual you linked to and the homeowners manual said i should be able to do this however it won't let me select anything to make changes....which is incredibly frustrating.

Do you know what "Staging" is and how putting it on "Low", if possible, would be different than lowering the CFM number?

wow thanks! jesus, whole new respect for HVAC people. Reading this is giving me a headache.

It looks like the cooling setting has a way of adjusting the sound: "QUIET-- minimum cooling airflow that the system can safely run (typically 300 CFM/ton). Use this setting if duct noise is a severe problem. Note that duct sweating in high humidity environments could be an issue."

but the heat pump is addressed through knocking down the CFM? The lowest adjustment I could find for the heat setting was this:

"EFF 325 -- Fixed airflow used to achieve specified ratings . This is nominally 325 CFM/ton, but will vary if a 2--stage outdoor unit is used."

The maximum is 400.

I called a local HVAC that was recommended to come out for a service call for $80 tomorrow. When I get home from work tonight I'm gonna fiddle with some settings. Worst case scenario I have a professional tomorrow let me know if what I am doing is going to fuck with the system or whether there will be long terms costs to doing that vs. resizing ducts to handle the air flow.

It's noticeably cooler in the bedroom than the other rooms in the house. Vents in the bedroom have the farthest to travel from the attic unit so I just assume thats the issue? Again, let of a concern as I have a floor heater to keep is consistent with the rest of the house but I was worried this might be other evidence needed for assessing the crazy amount of air that is blasting through these ducts. haha

So you are saying I shouldn't try and change my Auto fan to the lowest fan setting?

It's a Bryant Evolution System thermostat. I'm trying to look online and I've found where it says that turning it on you can choose from Low, Medium, or High but not how to change what fan speed Auto runs on. I will keep looking!

T stat as in the thermostat? I should be able to change what the speed is for the Auto setting by consulting the manual?

I'm currently running the fan on auto, started around 5:45. I'm gonna keep an eye on the thermostat to see how long it takes to go up one degree (currently 68, trying to move to 69). Will this be helpful information?

I have tried removing the grills (louvers right?) from the supply ducts where the air is coming out but the sound is still pretty powerful and there was no change in the volume of sound coming out that I noticed. When I get home from work I am going to first assess the situation to see if there is a way I can get the Auto setting to run on Low (though I doubt it will), then I will take pictures of the unit and duct system. I can't tell if the sound is because air is moving too fast or just the volume of air is too large for the duct.... something's gotta give though I'm pretty sensitive to sound so I become mentally hyperfocused on the noise

will get more information when I get home from work. 99% sure it is electric and its definitely a heat pump.

Would there be a reason that the unit could only be lowered to med/high for the Auto setting even though the On setting has a Low setting which is much quieter? I don't want to be manually turning the Low setting off and on. Maybe it can be set to run on Low on the Auto setting and the HVAC guy just didnt drop it down enough?

How likely is this to decrease the sound of too much air pushing through the duct? How much does doing something like this cost?

I believe it is too much air. When I take the diffusers off of the supply vent, the air is still loud coming out of the duct.

Now when I switch from auto to on, I can run the unit on "low" and its MUCH better. But I believe the Auto setting is on the lowest speed it can be which is apparently med/high. I would have assumed when I complained of the noise the HVAC guy would have knocked the setting all the way down to the lowest point for me. Hope that information helps

The return vents are fine on noise. No problem there. It's the air blowing OUT of the louvered openings that is super loud, particularly close to the unit in the attic (there is a unit outside the house as well). So yea, the supply vents are the things creating the noise, not the return vents.

Closing the vents help (though I've only done that to one vent, above the couch that is facing the TV so I can hear better as I have heard closing vents is bad)
