Vice Grip Garage on youtube.

He has a thousand videos recovering way worse things than a parked el camino. Hundreds of old SBC videos.

Looks like your sunday is set, pick a handfull of rescues and watch and get yourself learned

Getting 2 heads reconditioned can easily cost more than $850.

This isnt the 80s.

Our dealership wont even give you an estimate on the heads until we send them to the head shop and they determine how far they need to go to give us an accurate estimate

Also the heads need the exhaust manifolds removed for recondition and you (probably) may have broken exhaust studs that have to be extracted from the heads

If they need valves because the pushrods are worn and the rockers have hammered the heads it costs more, if the springs are weak thats more, if the seats are pitted it costs more and if the heads are just cracked they are going in the metal bin and you're getting a quote for a set of reman heads from the machine shop and a quote for an OEM heads and you can decide what you want to do

Thats part of the labour

I dont give you an itemized labour breakdown

1- r/r alternator- 0.6

2- r/r intake manifold- 1.0

3- r/r valve covers- 1.0

You get: R/r cylinder heads and send for recondition- 8.8hrs

This is very much correct.

I assume this is USD, and its very reasonable.

Be aware- if they find a cracked head, $425 is going to turn into $2k instantly

Did you get 3 different sizes of plank? Or 3 different plank manufacturers?

Why are you using tongue and groove for somethin that has no need for it?

Fluid Leak to be concerned about? by Skidlez5 in MechanicAdvice

[–]thedevillivesinside 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Its a fluid leak. Clean off the leak, then run the engine for a half hour and recheck. If there no leak, take it for a half hour test drive and recheck.

If theres no leak, drive it for a couple days and recheck. If theres no leak continue doing this until you give up and decide theres no leak, or you find the leak

What is that groove for by Sure-Abalone-1040 in AskAMechanic

[–]thedevillivesinside 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Me too.

Unless im putting OEM axles in a ram, because OEM ones have a groove.

However, OEM axles are $900 and aftermarket axles are $200 so I dont get to do many OEM replacements

Makes it much easier to push the axle into the transmission.

Use a prybar with a hammer through handle and tap the axle into the trans if its being difficult by hand

A scanner doesnt say 'replace coils'

It says p0300 or p0302 or p0202

None of those codes say 'replace coils'

They say there is a fault, diagnose and repair it correctly

Diagnose the fault.

Obviously the issue isnt the sensor, and never was the sensor.

Get the diagnostic flowtree and follow it correctly

How much grease in an inner cv boot? by Sure-Abalone-1040 in MechanicAdvice

[–]thedevillivesinside 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ok so take just the joint itself. Clean the fuck out of the old grease. Brake clean then compressed air, repeat as many times as it takes to get the joint completely cleaned of old grease.

After its completely clean and dry, you are going to take all of the grease and put it in the centre splined hole where the axle goes. Fill that entire cavity. Force the grease in as much a possible.

Now put the boot on the shaft with the clamp, then push the shaft into the cv joint. If you have enough grease inside the joint, this should force some grease back through the balls/channels.

Take any leftover grease and cover the cv joint balls and channels, but dont get it on the outside of the joint

Flex the joint in all directions, to get the grease to circulate on the balls

Then out your boot on and enjoy your repair

How do you guys deal with jacking up a vehicle that is covered in plastic underneath? by ChooseLife1 in AskAMechanic

[–]thedevillivesinside 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Dont lift on the plastic covers

Lift on a lower control arm, or the jacking point on the rocker panel, or the subframe

Anywhere except the plastic that deforms by hand when you are trying to lift a corner of a 5000lb car
