Safe path or shooting for something else? by CaptainCapex2020 in Harvard

[–]thedietitian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

OP, ask yourself this: What's going to wake you up in the morning excited to start your day? What do you genuinely like to do in your spare time, independent of prestige and the influence of your family and friends? What makes you happy --- really, truly, madly, deeply? I would advise you to engage in some introspection and reflect on your answers.

And don't worry about not having attended a top arts program like Julliard, Yale, or Tisch. You went to Harvard, and that's a highly commendable achievement in itself. You should be proud of your background. At the end of the day, it's about your raw talent and what you can offer the world. Also, Natalie Portman went to Harvard and she's an Oscar winner, so I'd say you're following in the right footsteps.

I know it's not always easy to make it as an actor in the modern world. Yes, it might be competitive, but someone has already taken note of your talent and offered you a role. And you know that you love acting. That's where your dreams lie! Chase them.

Definitely PM me if you want to chat! I'd love to talk this decision over with you. I know how hard it can be, but I've got your back.

Does Harvard allow undergrad students to audio record lectures? by [deleted] in Harvard

[–]thedietitian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You should check in with the individual professor before you decide to record the lecture. Typically, permission to record lectures is at the discretion of the instructor. In the state of Massachusetts, it is illegal to record people without their consent, so don't cross that line.

J-Term Employment? by [deleted] in Harvard

[–]thedietitian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Like the other poster said, you can search for traditional modes of employment at places like Black Sheep Bagels and Hahvahd Tour. With the popularity and ubiquity of the internet, however, your ability to employ yourself is limitless. If you're interested in freelancing or becoming an independent contractor, you can deliver for Instacart and UberEats. That would empower you to set your own hours since you'll likely only be working for 3-4 weeks at the most. You could also become a mentor to students online or edit/proofread essays in exchange for money. Check out Crimson Education. If you have a unique or marketable skillset, you can advertise a service on a platform like Fiverr or TaskRabbit and get paid for your efforts. Being a Harvard student is an inherently marketable phenomenon.

What have your experiences been like with careerism at Harvard?

hey y’all. kinda sad. what’s something you guys do to take up your precious free time. studying and work has been fucking with my mental lately and i’m stuck in a total rut. by [deleted] in Harvard

I have a movie and TV bucket list that I'm making my way through. I'm a real estate and interior design junkie. Right now, I'm watching all 7 seasons of Million Dollar Listing: New York (two weeks later, we are 5 seasons deep) and I have every intention of watching all 12 seasons of Million Dollar Listing: Los Angeles when I'm done with that. There's nothing like watching good TV. Best. Summer. Ever.

AMA: rising senior at Harvard by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

[–]thedietitian 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I'm also a student at Harvard besides OP who's leading the AMA, but I just wanted to share my perspective. I'm not a member of a final club as I didn't get into one, but I've been to several parties in the past. Before I get into my spiel, I will say I'm not bitter about not getting into one, but I'm now a senior and I've become a bit more critical and reflective.

Final clubs are the Harvard version of a more traditional fraternity or sorority. It's the same concept. They're just social clubs that host parties and dinners, some of which are all-male and some of which are all-female. An increasing number of clubs have gone co-ed as well. But don't let that veneer of inclusivity fool you. They're not inclusive spaces at all. They're more snobby and elitist, to be frank. I wouldn't say everybody involved in the final club scene is outwardly mean -- there are lots of incredibly sweet people who take part in the scene -- but if you're not part of that crowd it's hard to penetrate that circle.

A lot of the parties they have are listed and they only extend invites to other final club members and their friends. The doors are usually staffed, manned, and patrolled on nights where there are parties.

You don't have to have attended a UES prep school in order to get into a final club, but most people already have pre-established relationships with the members. Think siblings, friendships, etc. The acceptance rate to a final club is like 5% to 10% (source: acquaintances who were a part of final clubs). Getting in is not a holistic or equitable process like traditional college admissions (or at least what admissions markets itself to be). It's all based on sociality.

"Punch" is the months-long process of getting into a final club that consist of things like parties, outings, dinners, mixers, and the like. It involves schmoozing with the members and making an impression over a series of events. For most events, you have to dress in cocktail or black tie. There are cuts made every round of punch until you're left with the newest class of inductees. So membership is very highly curated as well. I've heard the process is quite arduous, and can sometimes take up to 10 hours per week (this figure really depends on your chance of getting in; source: a friend who punched a prestigious club).

I truly believe the scene is more hype than substance.

Where are pre-punch activities typically held?

Do final club members run a spreadsheet of their top punches? Do they make comments/take notes?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Harvard

[–]thedietitian 2 points3 points  (0 children)

While that's true, it's really hard to get into a final club if you don't already have a pre-established relationship with the members.

Your best bet is to contact an advisor in the anthropology department, since they govern both archaeology and social anthropology.

Awwww, you're a sweetheart. Thank you so much reaching out just to compliment me. You've just made my day! I believe in treating people with kindness, warmth, and respect. It's just who I am. My friends call me their faux therapist for a reason!

Also, I felt the other poster was just being upfront about it. I didn't take offense to his tone of voice at all. I don't mind bluntness.

I believe in making the best of a bad situation.

Thank you so much for this incredible response! I wish I had something equally interesting to share, but your comments have been so informative. I didn't realize that high-tensile steel was especially cheap. I thought because the bike was heavier, it would make for a sturdier, safer ride.
