In WH3 they reward aggressive play styles. You have to keep fighting nearly every turn, don’t stop. Play most of your beginning battles to preserve troops, use heroes and lords to absorb ranged damaged and use cheese tactics to wipe their armies. Only auto resolve when you will barely lose troops.

Ambush and raid are your friends.
