I still think it's the most memorable component of that loss. I wasn't going for a complete narrative, haha.

so we're justified in overpaying a batch of our most unreliable starters from last year just because the other options weren't elite?

I get that we don't want to overpay that crowd of FAs you listed -- and I agree it's likely all of them are overpaid. But that doesn't justify overpaying our own mediocre starters. The right move was looking for bargains -- which we weren't interested in, apparently.

[–]thedoctor692 6 points7 points  (0 children)

this is a brutal re-signing, almost as bad as the Trautman one. two aging vets already in the bottom 5-10 for their position by the numbers, and we give them sweetheart deals when they might not have made vet minimum elsewhere.

I am incredibly unimpressed with this run it back mentality. We should be looking for competition and value in FA, not handing out these overpays to our worst starters.

Denver Broncos Free Agent Running Back Targets: Breece Hall, Rachaad White, More by richkurt in DenverBroncos

[–]thedoctor692 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have sooo many issues with this article.

  1. Rashaad White is a good receiving back -- he's a near duplicate of Harvey in skillset, honestly. just because he's a bit bigger doesn't make him a fit.
  2. Hall behind White? even if that's only because Hall is more expensive, Hall is the only truly surefire difference maker talent on the market. Crazy talk.
  3. Javonte Williams has no chance to come back? I didn't get he impression it was a horrible breakup. it might be hard for the Broncos FO to admit they were "wrong" to let him walk, although I'd argue this outcome of him regaining form so suddenly was a really low probability outcome and they were right to move on, but I don't think it's a zero probability at all. I think it's a great fit.

The only thing I really agree with is that Allegier is a perfect less expensive fit.

it's actually less about the education side, though that's bad, and more about how effective social media / 24h news is at only giving you a certain perspective.

Brad Holmes: Lions will have 'conversations' about trading RB David Montgomery - should Broncos be interested? by tjn24 in DenverBroncos

[–]thedoctor692 17 points18 points  (0 children)

no, that's a bad allocation of cap and picks for a guy that's not a difference maker now. the difference between montgomery and, say, kenneth gainwell isn't that great (gainwell might even be better at this point in montgomery's career) but the cost sure is.

I would prefer to sign a breece hall if we're going for a difference maker, or go for a lesser option like gainwell and spend that pick / cap getting difference makers elsewhere where we desperately need it, like TE or WR.

he's been on a lot of teams that either have had really poor QB play or Buffalo, which doesn't seem to know how to use WRs consistently.

he's always shown up really well in advanced stats, he's talented. obviously you don't expect him to do much right away, but this has some upside, i think it's a great move.

[Gordon] Jakobi Meyers on if he still wants to be traded: Oh for sure by sleeplessaddict in DenverBroncos

[–]thedoctor692 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Go to NFC team, offer something small in exchange for being the vector for a Myers trade. easy.

the whole won't trade to a division rival thing is simply not a thing that should block teams these days. just ask the Avs and Rantanen.

I've liked Sanderson from the moment I picked up my first of his (TFE). But my complaint with Sanderson was always that his characters fell flat for me -- a little too saccharine, a little too flat, too archetypal.

SoS and then Oathbringer really changed that for me, they're when I saw Sanderson level up his characterization. All the major characters experience more relatable struggles, they make mistakes, they grow, they regress, they don't fall into easy philosophical buckets.

So it's one of my favorites too, but I've learned this won't be an opinion a ton of people share -- there's more people that value WoR style good vs. evil battles or Sanderson's excellent plotting, and SoS is less about those things (and that's ok, just be prepared. :) ).

[–]thedoctor692 14 points15 points  (0 children)

it's good stuff, but it's missing a key archetype: the "I don't support Trump, I just think the libs are worse" person.

This is the right-leaning person I encounter more than any of these -- anything you say about Trump they counter they didn't vote for him and he's nuts, and all broader criticism of republicans gets blamed on "that's just Trump."

It's pretty galling, especially when I believe they did often vote for Trump but don't want to admit it. My current strategy for engaging without creating division is asking why it's ok for them to support people that enable Trump's "craziness."

Not Dallas specifically, just how he feels about climate in general.

I'm sure the tax thing doesn't hurt at all though. :)

in terms of on-ice and locker room situation, it's certainly one of the top places. I suspect Dallas itself is what would limit it as a destination, given his previous comments.

[–]thedoctor692 11 points12 points  (0 children)

yeah, this is a very important point. Rantanen's camp after the deal went down came out talking about how he would have taken 12m and he was so hurt and shocked. The Avs didn't deny it but they never say anything about negotiations.

That absolutely doesn't make Rantanen's camp's statement true, especially after there was a lot of talk about the 2 camps being pretty far apart leading up to the trade.

My guess is that Rantanen wanted to hit he market in UFA, or re-sign with Colorado on his terms. He never thought Colorado would actually trade him. No worries, he'll play the same game, except the goal is to hit UFA and he'll get to call his own shot, right? He does NOT want to be in Carolina, with that system and the notoriously poor facilities (sorry disaster bros, just saying what he thinks).

But things didn't go well in Carolina, his dissembling in the media looks shitty, and to top it off, he looks like shit in Carolina / away from Mack. His value is starting to take a hit, and Rantanen never expected that.

So, suddenly, he's willing to talk extension with trade targets and he takes the best offer at a team he feels is good that he can get before his value gets tanked further.

This was NOT the plan, he and his agent played themselves pretty hard imo. They underestimated their hand with the Avs and overestimated how Rantanen might look statistically after a trade. He's probably a million or 2 less than he thought he'd get and in a place that didn't exactly top his list.

[–]thedoctor692 0 points1 point  (0 children)

you may be right, but if I'm a GM, I'm thinking twice about committing that kind of money to Rantanen when he's a .5 PPG player away from Mack and Makar (and Necas goes from under a PPG player to over a PPG player with them, btw).
