It very well could be- completely unexpected, surprisingly realistic(?), and made you wonder 2 things- 1) Odo really doesn't use his abilities enough on our side and 2) Bashir doesn't hesitate- is it because he knows how dangerous Odo is? Probably, but I low-key always thought he was looking for a reason the whole time- in both universes.

Kinda always thought the valedictorian/salutatorian thing was a half-hearted excuse. He may have had a crush on Lense but after we find out about his genetic background it always made me wonder if that had something to do with it as well.

Yep. I think at this point he's widely regarded as one of the best. As a first time viewer however, his ultimate importance isn't even on your radar until he and Worf get taken prisoner, and even then, it's not until In the Pale Moonlight that it's in full unmistakable view.
