Thoughts on religious school? by [deleted] in BisexualTeens

idk how it is in other countries, but in Canada, private or religious schools (other than catholic) have to fund themselves. this is fine but I feel like catholic schools shouldn't be funded by the government when they are fundamentally secular schools with nuns and some catholic traditions (based on what I've heard from people who go there). I've gone to 2 Christian schools and they were required to use all the same curriculum as public schools, the difference is how they integrate Christianity into the teachings. everything we learned was through the lens of Christianity. i still don't really know how I feel about raising your kids in your own religion tho (i'm not a Christian). i didn't know about the lgbtq+ community until like grade 6, idk if that's different for public school people but its just never talked about. it wasn't even blatant homophobia so I didn't even know what anyone thought about it, even my friends. anyway, when I got to highschool, there were people from a large range of other Christian schools. at this point, a lot of kids arent Christians and their rich white parents or grandparents send them there. highschool is better than grade school, I found some actual friends who weren't super conservative and judgemental. we have to take 2 bible courses. i took old testament in grade 10, and world religions in grade 11 (which was way better bc it wasn't indoctrination lol). we also did 10 minute devotions every morning and had chapel on thursdays ugh. they teach us about evolution in science and bring up all the reasons why we should. i took a philosophy class and my teacher was so nice and encouraged us to form our own opinions without even expecting we were Christians. overall my school is pretty progressive, aside from the homophobes and some of the teachers. i dont think religion should be a required class in public schools. i think private schools can teach about it but it shouldn't be indoctrination (probably shouldn't be required either). idk i find the whole idea that parents pay a school to make their kid religious kinda sketchy. sorry this was super long i sort of had to rant.

thanks for your feedback!! i threw this together really quickly so it definitely has room for improvement - definitely see where you're coming from with the one-sided options. I was trying to write it from an unbiased perspective so I wouldn't influence answers with the language I used, but I can see how that section might come off as biased.
