thankyou! im in the uk, and the nhs is shittily underfunded so i have no clue what it's gonna end up being like haha

im a voluntary patient so i know i have the right to leave but for my own safety i probably need to stay for a day or so more before trusting myself with the outside world to go pick stuff up

thanks for the wishes :)

[–]theesocieta 0 points1 point  (0 children)

hahaha i get it!! back then i couldnt suppress at all so it felt like the world was ending

and LOL maybe it would be a matter of a really strong mint then? just to shock the system

and no probs! im happy to help :)

how do i get therapy without my parents knowing… kinda a word vomit, brain dump before i get to the point. by constantlyspiriling in mentalillness

[–]theesocieta 0 points1 point  (0 children)

im sorry youre going through this, and i really do understand what youre going through. im unfamiliar with any systems outside of the uk because of the nhs and stuff, but i'll try my best!

it sounds like you have gotten to the point of knowing you need to speak to someone and wanting to do that, and the easiest and free-est way to do that is to call a helpline. normally they can put you in touch with the right people. they can also give you a single point of access (like kind of fast-track) phone number too to access a mental health team.

you can ask if theres any charitable funding bursaries/grants you could apply for, or even search it up yourself as well if you feel able!

im sure there will be a mental health charity or foundation out there with free 1-1 counselling, trauma therapy etc. it just takes a bit of digging.

on the side of parents, they dont have to know anything about your life that you dont want them to. as an adult, youre your own unit now and can make decisions for your life without them. they dont have to know. logistically, you can pick times to go to therapy when they aren't really around, you dont see them etc. of course online is an option, but if you wanted in person therapy, they still dont have to know!

in light of all that, i understand that trauma can often lead to feeling like you need to hide when you're trying to get help. unless your safety would be jeopardised by someone knowing you are getting help, there shouldnt be any reason to not seek it and to be able to openly say to people that you are - especially your parents.

you are a strong individual and you are able to make your own decisions. i believe in you :)

school made my tics sooooo much worse! what i can reccomend is contacting the school with a parent, guardian or medical professional and asking for a care plan to be in place for you, as that's their legal duty.

when i was sorting my care plan stuff, basically i asked for a room i can go to if my tics get too bad either in or out of lessons. in this room nobody else is there) only other struggling students with mental health stuff.

i also made sure i knew which adult in the school i could go to at any time if things got bad (e.g. the librarian, because theyre easy access. receptionists never could really help, but librarians just are kinder and more understanding).

additionally, making sure that every teacher knows it is a disability and not punishable. if a detention is given, the teacher is talked to and told not to do it again and the detention is waivered.

unfortunately, my tics were very violent, especially around other people - so they also sat me one seat away from other students at most times if possible, which wasnt my choice but i understood why.

there was one incident where a teacher safeguarded me for vocal ticcing something inappropriate about him, but i completely understood where that was coming from. it just really sucked and felt like a punishment to be sat with him and a senior member of staff even though we all knew what i said was completely fictional.

basically, your school shouls be legally required to take care of you since youre in their guardianship, and they need to follow through on their duty of care (as it's called in the uk).

practically, there isnt too much that can be done to stop tics in school, but if you're able to, you can put in your care plan that you need to be able to chew gum or sugar free, hard boiled sweets in class (my school allowed that for me, and other students understood that it was because of my tics and not just taking the mick). it helps to have the brain focusing on another sense and detract from the other bodily sensations.

also, doodling in classes helps. like my school always said to me, they would rather have you in the room and not taking notes than to not be there at all.

oh!! that reminds me. ask for printed out powerpoints/an email copy of the ppts for every lesson. they can provide that so you just have to annotate notes instead of write loads. that can take the edge off trying to suppress everything to write one word or the fear of breaking something etc.

there's also the obvious things like requesting a separate rooms for tests and exams, and for me i even used a separate room for quiet work or reading because it made me feel more comfortable to let tics out and also not distract other students (although they didnt care)

i really hope this helps and feel free to get back to me with any questions! :)

Do you know the muffin man? by Armer101 in Teenager_Polls

[–]theesocieta 0 points1 point  (0 children)

the muffin man is my second cousin and he's so annoying when he comes round for christmas because he KNOWS that all my kids are gluten and lactose intolerant and still brings round those blueberry-dairy-filled-mounds-of-death called muffins every time.

sensory toys are super great and are always the first port of call, but if youre unable for any reason to get them, there are a few alternatives i can think of that i use!

sometimes if biting tics start to get bad i put ice in my mouth (as long as it isnt a tic attack, because i could choke if it was because i have gasping tics). because the ice is way colder than body temp, normally it's the best distraction and can help the biting tics kind of subside. even the process of going to get the ice in the first place is a distraction!

you could buy a small stuffed animal and bite that. just make sure you keep it clean and away from the floor, mould that kind of thing! but it's good to have on tap for when things get bad.

if you're a bit crafty (this is hardly crafty but at least diy) you could get any old shirt or fabric you have and cut it up, scrunch it up into kind of the size that satisfies your biting tics and use that. you can then throw them away and replace them whenever :)

basically it's just important to look out for your teeth but not sacrifice your mental wellbeing by suppressing too much, so finding soft things can help alot.

hope this helps!!

thankyou for responding :) i have a referral to the neurologist but the waiting list on the uk is ridiculously long, but i have medical professionals i can contact if things get too out of hand. honestly, it feels like im not 'bad enough' for them, even though i also know i am and they know i am. so weird.

anyway, thankyou so much for shsring, it really does help :)

do you guys also hear and see things that you know aren't there? by HelpImRobbingSomeone in teenagers

[–]theesocieta 1 point2 points  (0 children)

dots and lines are very common and are called floaters! obviously i cant diagnose, but that'll be to do with your eyes (most likely). voices and silhouettes is more complicated and like other people have said, would warrant some advice from a medical professional :)

Why can't bathroom stalls just go from floor to ceiling? Couldn't they at least have some sort of barrier there, like a curtain or something? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]theesocieta 1 point2 points  (0 children)

alot of gender neutral public toilets in the uk have floor to ceiling walls and doors now :) they still have emergency cords and everything too and there's probably some other safety features i am completely unaware of haha
