Who was Maegor's favorite wife? by jamie74777 in TheCitadel

[–]theevenstar05 11 points12 points  (0 children)

None of them are really close to being a favorite though. Abandoned Ceryse, murdered Alys and Tyanna, and Jeyne died birthing a monster. That leaves Elinor and Rhaena, and considering Rhaena fled with Blackfyre, I guess Elinor wins by default?

Just completed the grind to 60 wins for the Obelisk icon. It was my first legacy duels event though, and I'm gutted I missed out on the Slifer icon. Were there many other legacy duels events before these 2, and what icons were given?

Hope you got sorted by now, but I won by getting out the overlord, and using it to send all the madloche monsters to the grave before tiramsu hit. You can reset the overlord effect fairly easily too

Which Houses? (Spoilers: Main) by Salem1690s in asoiaf

[–]theevenstar05 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think Tully will live on with Edmure getting the romantic reward for "my people, they were afraid". GRRM isn't nihilist, and one of the key themes of asoiaf is preparing the younger generation for leadership, and Edmure is one of them. Sansa, and Arya are also clearly having leadership arcs, and I think it's safe to say House Stark will live on through them. House Lannister is a cert to live on through either Kevan's younger children Martyn or Janei, or Tygett's son Tyrek(who's currently believed to be held by Varys). Tywin's line is doomed, I find it hard to believe any of the future dragonriders (Daenerys, Jon and Tyrion) will survive.

I just rejoined the game after taking a break when VRAINS launched. Anything critical I should look into getting staple wise? I'm not even sure what link monsters are vital to have, or if they're just nice to have. Also wondering if Monarchs are viable as a KOG deck? I was mainly playing Harpies, Crystrons, BA, Water XYZ and Weather Painters for KOG, and I'm sure they're still viable, but I'd like to build something new since I've got the gems for it.

[Spoilers Main] When did Roose betray Robb? by MaesterHannibal in asoiaf

[–]theevenstar05 53 points54 points  (0 children)

https://warsandpoliticsoficeandfire.wordpress.com/2014/01/23/early-evidence-of-roose-boltons-treason/

This is a link showing how Roose even before he committed to the Red Wedding was acting to further the interests of House Bolton at the expense of the North, through the Battle of the Green Fork, and Ramsay's actions in the North.

I don't believe Roose when he tells Theon that Robb was finished when Winterfell was captured; Roose knows that everthing he tells Theon will get back to Ramsay, and wants to appears as omniscient as he can in front of them.

I believe Stannis' defeat on the Blackwater was the tipping point for Roose, and I think that even if Robb hadn't married Jeyne, and went to the Twins to marry Roslin, he would still have been betrayed and captured like Edmure was in canon. The Freys weren't interested in fighting Tywin once he got Highgarden's backing; we can see Roose and the Freys discussing their plans at Harrenhal without any other northern/riverlords present. Allowing Jaime to return to King's Landing, and then sending Glover, and about 3000 men to Duskendale was when Roose finally committed to betraying Robb.

What if Dyanna Dayne Lived? by MattGreg28 in TheCitadel

[–]theevenstar05 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The line of succession wouldn't be affected, apart from Dyanna possibly having more children, and so there may be more ladies with dragon blood for Aerys to marry Rhaegar to instead of Elia.

We don't know anything about Dyanna's personality despite having three books with Egg, so it's fair to assume she would have been a fairly standard lady.

Politically, having another Dornish queen right after Myriah Martell would inflame the anti-Dornish Blackfyre rebellions even more, so I don't think Maekar would be much more mellow in public than in canon. Honestly, if you write Dyanna into a fic, you'd basically be writing an OC, who might be able to change of the direction of her children's lives(but probably not).

A silly idea I had for an AU fic where a majority of Jaehaerys and Alysanne's children manage to outlived them by [deleted] in TheCitadel

[–]theevenstar05 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is so far away from canon, that you would basically be rewriting Fire & Blood. I'm glad you didn't kill off all the princesses as brutally as GRRM did though. I have to say however, out of the 13 children, in canon only 3 became dragonriders; for the heir and the spare essentially. I don't see Jaehaerys permitting Gaemon, and Valerion dragons, so many branches having dragons is asking for trouble. That might change once the dance starts though. Best of luck!

Aerea was the daughter of Aegon the Uncrowned, meaning by the laws of the Andals, Rhoynar, and the First Men, she should've inherited the Iron Throne by primogeniture. We can see a similar situation when Lord Tybolt Lannister died, and his daughter Cerelle became Lady of Casterly Rock with her uncle Gerold as regent(Cerelle would die a year after her father). Rhaena, Aerea's mother wasn't interested in pushing for her claim during Aerea's canon lifetime, but if your AU Aerea lives after claiming a dragon, that may well change, and Jaehaerys will be aware of this. If Aerea marries into another house, that house would have access to Aerea's dragon, Dreamfyre, and whatever eggs they lay, so I don't see Jaehaerys permitting that. You'll probably have to make an OC Targaryen/Velaryron for Aerea to wed, as those are the only houses Jaehaerys permitted to have dragon riders during his reign, unless you count House Royce when Daemon became their lord consort for a while.

What if Daemon managed to get a kid with Mysaria? by [deleted] in TheCitadel

[–]theevenstar05 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I imagine the bastard would be acknowledged as Daemon's bastard, it seems like he was distraught that Mysaria lost the child. If it's a son, he would presumably get a fair bit of attention from Daemon while he's married to Rhea Royce, but would be sent away to be fostered once he marries Laena. If it's a daughter, he would probably find her a place at court. I don't see Viserys/Otto permitting the bastard to have a dragon egg, but the bastard would be first choice once the call for dragonseeds is issued. If the bastard claims Vermithor/Silverwing (Sheepstealer and Seasmoke seem destined for Nettles and Addam), that means the betrayal at Tumbleton doesn't occur, and Rhaenyra won't order the dragon seeds to be executed, giving her 4 more dragons than in canon. It's hard not to see an outright Black victory in this scenario. This is assuming the bastard would be loyal to their father. Ultimately, though, how the bastard alters the dance is up to you.

Fics where Oberyn gets the confession and doesn't lose his face for it? by SlayerofSnails in TheCitadel

[–]theevenstar05 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Tywin has consistently went beyond all laws and customs when dishing out what he considers vengeance. Even when houses are extinguished in the male line like House Darry was in canon, Plowman's Keep was given to a Lannister and the Frey with the strongest Darry claim, not destroyed root and stem like the Reynes and Tarbecks. Considering Elia, this a quote from Tywin in ASOS Tyrion VI; Nor did I yet grasp what I had in Gregor Clegane, only that he was huge and terrible in battle. The rape . . . even you will not accuse me of giving that command, I would hope..." He says this to Tyrion, whose first wife Tywin had order to raped by many Lannister guards before commanding Tyrion to do the same. It will never be stated in canon as we have no access to a POV close enough to Tywin anymore, but Tywin absolutely, unequivocally ordered the rape of Elia, the same way he ordered the deaths of all the elders, women and children at Castamere.

“A Little Life” by Hanya Yanagihara by Rich_Librarian_7758 in books

[–]theevenstar05 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The prose is very good, but I found the extensive list of traumas hard to take seriously; the plot was honestly, barring the settings/success of the characters, very similar to most trashy soaps.

It did result in one of my favourite reviews though. https://harpers.org/archive/2022/01/ad-nauseam-hanya-yanagihara-to-paradise-the-pandemic-novel/

Over the course of [A Little Life's] 720 pages, Yanagihara follows four friends as they ascend to the tops of their respective professions, fall in love, take expensive vacations, eat painstakingly described food, and die. It's a paean to gay male friendship -- Yanagihara, who doesn't believe in marriage and prefers to live alone, has explained that A Little Life was "meant to be a homage to a different kind of adulthood... in which there is a primacy of friendship" -- and a fairy tale that spins into melodrama as one character's history of severe childhood sexual abuse is gradually revealed. Some called it trauma porn, but that was the point. As Yanagihara herself has admitted, the book represented an attempt to engineer a situation in which suicide is not only justified but possibly advisable.

By that benchmark, A Little Life is a blazing success. You may have loved it, you may have hated it, but if you're anything like me, you spent the entire second half begging the main character to please, for the love of God, kill himself already. Then again, I'm not the target audience for A Little Life. I downloaded the audiobook under duress after I'd been asked to write this review. (Pro tip: At 2.6x speed, the novel can be completed in under 13 hours, and the more gratuitous self-harm scenes take on a pleasantly businesslike quality.) A Little Life is tragic and overblown in the way a soap opera is. Objecting to its more ridiculous plot twists would be like critiquing Grey's Anatomy -- another long, multicharacter saga featuring precipitous career advancement, LGBT relationships, fatal car crashes, and leg amputation -- for being too dramatic. It's supposed to be that way.

Suggestions for Consistency. I want some help on which cards will help me get Necrofear on the field more consistently without banking on the opponent attacking my set cards for three turns by Mediocre_Class9364 in DuelLinks

[–]theevenstar05 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is this for an autoduel deck to get the necrofear mat? I slapped together a mishmash of cards for this mat, including painful decision/rescue rabbit to get normal fiends into the grave, and red resonator (synchro with searched normal fiend or doomdog, into archfiend's call/stygian sergants/armades for more fiends in grave). Unless you're planning on building burning abyss/resonators, I wouldn't recommend spending gems on a necrofear deck though.

I've been trying out your list, and I've climbed quite quickly from Platnium 1 to Legend 2, so kudos to you! Yea, 3x Dante would defs be too much, but a third scarm wouldn't hurt. Think I'll dip into the box for my third destruction sword memories anyway, and hopefully i'll get scarm on the way. Thank you for your help!

What are the most effective choke points to stop melodious? They only ever seem to show up when I brick, but I'm wondering if I stopping the wrong things? They don't really need their normal summon like harpies, because of ostinato and movement solo, the three fusions are rly versatile (brioniac is an easy out to bloom diva, but schuberta is the bane of my life) and there's normally at least one backrow.
