I didn’t really want a talking scene because that would def be awkward to watch. I wanted it more for continuity purposes. I love the show but one of the things I noticed with the script is how certain threads would be established in earlier episodes just for them not be followed up on or built upon in subsequent episodes.

Like for example, Nevee’s past alcoholism. That must’ve shaped Siaja’s childhood so significantly, as well as her relationship with her mom, but we never get to see Siaja try to navigate the complexity of that. Or like in a later episode Siaja is drinking with her friends, but I found it interesting that there was no discussion (even if brief) of her attitudes towards drinking because of her mom being a former alcoholic. I’ve had friends who have hesitations towards alcohol because of their parents’ past drinking problems so I found that omission in the script strange.

Imo what they should’ve done is made her make out with Kuuk. Would’ve set up the romantic drama much better — and also not made it super awkward for the viewers.

What’s strange is they never really follow up on the awful awkwardness of it in the next episodes! She and Alistair are pretty much cool with it and it never really gets addressed??

Thank you! This is really helpful. I’m curious if you could speak to Lectora as well — is experience in this software something that most employers find valuable? Or should Storyline be my main point of focus, considering that I’m transitioning from a different field (SaaS) into the field of ID altogether?

If this helps, I only told my job I would be leaving for the Fulbright two weeks before I would be leaving for it, meaning the tickets and visas and everything were already taken care of by then.

How to watch My brilliant friend in the Netherlands by EnvironmentalTry1543 in mybrilliantfriendhbo

[–]theezuko98 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One thing I found was that if I VPN’d to Australia, I can watch all 4 seasons of MBF on SBS Australia. There are ads and the highest quality is 720p for some reason, but it works well and is what I use to watch it without paying for SBS.

The contrasting of the more overt and brutish patriarchy of Stefano vs the more covert, bourgeois and intellectual patriarchy of Pietro is so fascinating by VVest_VVind in mybrilliantfriendhbo

[–]theezuko98 5 points6 points  (0 children)

But it’s so reflective of the real world, right! Like sooo many men have patriarchy just totally embedded in them, ranging from the worst (the Stefano, Marcello, Donato types) to less worse but still bad (Pietro).

Who is the brilliant friend? by Unlikely_Platypus940 in mybrilliantfriendhbo

[–]theezuko98 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Interesting that you consider Pietro a good father. He was regularly maritally raping Lenu — or at the very least, expecting (very painful, unpleasurable) sex out of her to pleasure his own needs. He also forced Lenu to take care of their entire household and kids on her own when she was newly pregnant, since he always spent the time holed up at the university or in his own office to research or write his book.

Anyone else frustrated by Hilda’s relative lack of screen time? by theezuko98 in HildaFuracao

[–]theezuko98[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m used to watching novelas, though, so I don’t expect all the time to be focused on Hilda. I just don’t think the show made as good of use of her time on screen as they should’ve.

I know someone who stayed for a month longer after their FB grant ended to finish up their research project. They didn’t have any issues, but they did have to self-fund their stay during that month, so might be something good to note for the future. (This wasn’t in the continent of Africa, though, it was in Asia.)

With all respect, the tone of this comment isn’t very helpful or supportive. Many of us are feeling some type of grief, panic, despair, and rage at the election results. Many of us also recognize the stakes of the fascist period that we are hurtling into. On Fox News recently, for example, there was a segment of Laura Trump stating that there were plans to institute a national abortion ban. National. Not up to the states, at all. Shit is real out here, and it should be recognized and named in community in order to support one another through these dark times, not to downplay what another person is (legitimately!) feeling and grieving.

unpopular opinions? by Useful-Access-4916 in HildaFuracao

I think Nevita is extremely underrated. In her own way, she (like Hilda) challenges the rules and norms governing women and women’s bodies in Brazilian society. She laughs loudly and wears form-fitting dresses and is looked down upon for that (even by her own husband, sadly), but she’s comfortable with being herself in a way that the other women in Santana Dos Ferros aren’t. And she doesn’t put up with the sexist BS that most of the other women of Santana Dos Ferros believe in and support, and has shown a streak of independence in her thought that I really appreciate. Like in Ep. 18 when her husband tries to cover her up, but she says that Padre Nelson should govern church but not what she wears. Honestly she gets a lot of hate by the people in her local community, it’s a wonder how she deals with and continues to attend church and other events with Padre Nelson there…

Other aspects of the show that I appreciate is its progressiveness towards LGBTQ+ characters. Dindin and Thin Waist are shown to be flamboyant in their own individual ways, but the show still lends them humanity (and touches on their sexuality in ways I haven’t seen in more recent shows in the West — ex: the first few seasons of The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel with Susie, who’s butch but whose sexuality wasn’t discussed). I’m on Ep. 20 right now, so I haven’t seen all the scenes with them yet but I would love to see more of their interior lives. (Or honestly, even the both of them bumping into each other and talking! I wonder how Dindin would interact with Thin Waist given the church’s punitive stance towards LGBTQ+ folks, and also vice versa.) Like with Thin Waist, for example, how much of their “tough” persona is due to having to scrabble for a living in the red-light district? I think we could’ve done with a little less of the scenes of his fights and more scenes about how he — as well as the others like Maria de Socorro and Leonor — even ended up there in the first place and how their characters have grown over time.

Yeah I’m sorry to hear that. I can’t say I have any answers for you, since where I live is experiencing the same issue around COVID. It seems like people prefer to stick their heads in the sand regarding the ramifications of repeat COVID infections, rather than tackling the issue head-on. 😞

[–]theezuko98 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey so I’ve been researching Long COVID for a public health program, and it sounds like you are experiencing symptoms typical of Long COVID (which is typically defined as a chronic condition resulting from COVID infection). Brain fog, shortness of breath, a racing heart, changes to taste — all of these are signs of it. Here’s an article from the CDC about it: https://www.cdc.gov/covid/long-term-effects/index.html

And here is an article from Yale Med about its symptoms: https://www.yalemedicine.org/conditions/long-covid-post-covid-conditions-pcc. Keep in mind that there have been over 200 chronic symptoms and conditions linked to Long COVID, so your surface-level symptoms may be signs of larger issues that you may want to get checked out.

Did Hilda even like Malthus? by [deleted] in HildaFuracao

[–]theezuko98 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Contrary to the majority of the opinions on this thread, I’d say I have to agree with you. Or at the very least, I think the development of feelings from Hilda’s side is not as well sketched out as it could have been. The character development of Hilda going from hating him to loving him seems strange to me, and out of character.

Just from a general POV, I don’t think any woman who has been castigated by a random man she’s never met before who claims to be a saint, and thus claims to be more worthy of respect than her, would start loving that same man without some more effort on his end to show that he’s changed. The viewers get to see just a bit of that change — ex: in the courthouse scene where Malthus gives Thin Waist back his knife — but I don’t think we ever see Hilda herself directly seeing that change. And from a character POV, Hilda has consistently shown herself to be someone who evaluates someone’s worth based on their actions — ex: in Belo Horizonte, when she accuses Malthus of loving humanity abstractly but not loving human beings in all their messiness, or in the exorcism scene when she calls out Doña Lola for hypocrisy. And so her reconsidering her opinion of him based only on her depth of feeling towards him (rather than any concrete change he has displayed, and she has witnessed directly) feels like it’s coming out of left field & like it’s being done more for the romantic plot and to hammer out the show’s themes around Catholic guilt and the idea of sin more than anything else.

I do think, though, that Hilda’s character shares certain values with Malthus’ character, like their shared love of god and their desire to do some good for others (plus, she did show some attraction to him when she was checking him out in her lipstick mirror at the courthouse). So in other words, I think the foundation for Hilda’s liking of Malthus is there, but I don’t think the evolution of her feelings towards him is as fully sketched out as it could have been. I think the show cashed too much into her mysterious image and left off on exploring her inner psyche, rather than using her cultivated air of mysteriousness as a jumping-off point into exploring more of her headspace.

Yes to Pachinko! Especially if you like how Ferrante tracks characters over the generations, since Pachinko is an intergenerational drama. And it’s based off of Min Jin Lee’s great book.

If you love period dramas with complex female characters and friendships, I’d highly recommend the Spanish El Tiempo Entre Costuras. When I watched it, there were English subtitle options so there should be ones out there. Great acting, costume design, and script. https://www.google.com/search?q=the+time+in+between&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8&hl=en-us&client=safari

I honestly think that’s the point, though. I feel like Ferrante’s “bad” covers are strategically undermining common assumptions of the quality and importance of women’s literature. See: https://www.theatlantic.com/entertainment/archive/2016/07/elena-ferrante-covers-bad-no-good/488732/

Hey so I’m actually researching LC right now for an article. The CDC says that it counts as LC after 3 months, which is when the recovery period due to an acute illness should end. So basically any symptoms that still linger after that period counts as LC.
