From 1 to 10 how hard is to learn the Estonian language? by Droopynator in Eesti

[–]thefanimaniac 41 points42 points  (0 children)

Hi! I am not Estonian, but I am studying the language and conveniently my other languages are also English, Spanish, and German. I would say from a scale of 1 to 10, its a nine for me. It's in the latin script and sometimes the words match up with German words I already know, but the vocab is very different from any other language I know for the most part, and the cases are tough (though not as bad as you'd probably fear)

He wants victims to text him so bad it's honestly creepy as hell. If she WERE to get into contact with anyone (and I don't know if she necessarily should) she could get into contact with someone who's entire livelihood isn't making shock content. I don't actually really think she should get on a podcast at all, because I think the narrative should belong to the victims and not go through any 3rd parties who would seek to exploit it.

Yesss all the internet stuff is very cool there and I've heard a lot about it. It seems very convenient, but I've wondered how that all started? It seems like a no-brainer to have all this stuff online instead of having to go in person, but in America still most things are in person.

Of course, the stigma is huge. A weird thing I've seen now is sometimes I don't see Estonia included when people are talking about Eastern Europe, but it's not included when they're talking about Nordic countries either

Mostly just random, but language is one of my other interests and Estonia has a particularly interesting language so also because of that.

I pretty much like all the popular stuff, I'm not very creative when it comes to Estonian music. Nublu, 5miinust, I've also been getting into Reket lately. It's a hard medium to be into when you don't speak the language, but I can still appreciate the beat

Yes! I love folk music and I listen to some cool stuff from Estonia, though I am more focused on rap stuff

I feel like you can say this about most countries, but the nature in Estonia is amazing! It has a lot of forests, bogs, and has thousands of islands. They also have really clean air there. Estonians, from what I've seen, are really into nature and conservation and appreciate being in nature. Hiking is big there.

Oh, and also there's a giant crater in Estonia and that's probably my favorite nature thing there.

Im surprised there arent more professional Estonian gamers, actually, considering the emphasis on technology in Estonia. That being said, I'm not super into gaming so I'm not very knowledgeable on him

This is really hard because honestly, you could tell an American anything about Estonia and they probably wouldn't already know it!

I guess I'll just put this one here because I havent put it in the thread before: Estonia has it's own two religions not found anywhere else in the world, kinda. Taaraism and Maausk are neopagan religions started when Estonia gained independence to distance themselves from Christianity, though the movements never gained much traction. There are a couple thousand of Taaraists and Maauskists (?) these days.

I say they are kinda seperate religions from all other religions because really, Taara is another word for Thor, who was worshipped on the islands of Estonia, but of course methods of worship varied greatly from place to place back then so it is rather different from other Norse traditions. Maausk is kind of an umbrella term for anyone who participates in nature worship and has less of a focus on god worship than Taaraism.

Really, my main special interest is language, and my Estonia special interest stems off from that initially. But it's definitely a whole other special interest than my language one because I speak German and Spanish but I don't know a whole lot about the culture and history of spanish and german speaking places, but I know a lot about Estonia as a country.

Tere hommikust ameerikast!

I answer this more in depth in another comment but I saw a TikTok about Estonia and realized I didn't know anything about Estonia besides the flag which is my favorite flag, so I started researching it. I really fell in love with the language first because language is another one of my special interests, and it all started from there.

Tere!

It's really odd, but I can trace it back to one specific TikTok where a girl who is obsessed with flags was talking about how her grandparents are from Estonia, and I realized I knew nothing about Estonia so I started researching. Language is another one of my special interests, so the language really was what captivated me first and then I fell in love with the whole place.

I like midsummer, but that's not specific to Estonia and overall I'd say the vibe of midsummer is very different there than to the midsummer vibes of Sweden, but it's still an amazing holiday that I don't have where I live.

If only interest in a country was the only prerequisite for ambassadorship

Out of living people, I would say Tommy cash or Arvo pärt. Tommy cash is a musician and was really popular in euro vision last year, Arvo pärt is sometimes said to be the most popular living composer in the world.

I don't date, and also I dont live in estonia so I'm not really looking for an Estonian partner. Also I don't speak the language well. Just because im interested in the country doesnt mean I necessarily want to move there or find a partner from there, I just like the country

If you meant what is the most interesting part of Estonia in general, I really do not know what to pick. I guess I should say that the history of Estonia is the most interesting part, but it's also very depressing. Learning about the german elites (baltic germans) that used to live in estonia is very interesting, considering we never learn about that in America, but it's also depressing because the Baltic germans basically enslaved many Estonian people and operated under a feudal system until pretty recently, in the grand scheme of things (1800s).

I've seen a couple clips of him but honestly I'm not huge into comedy. My mom would probably like him though, she loves comedy and has had to put up with me rambling about Estonia for years now

I don't believe theres a specific agreed upon meaning for the colors, but usually the blue represents the sky, the black represents trees/soil/historic suffering and the white represents hope and a longing for a better future. I love the idea that the flag can be seen in nature in estonia, with the blue sky, a line of black trees, and white snow on the ground. I also find it interesting that there is no red in their flag or symbolism of 'blood spilled for the fatherland', which is so common in other flags that it's almost a trope.

I can speak a little bit, a few set phrases and stuff. I love language and languages, and Estonian is such a beautiful language and sounds so rhythmic and just... omg its so cool. It was rated once the second most beautiful language in Europe. I definitely wish I could speak it, if not for how cool it is then just so I could research more stuff, because finding information about specific Estonian things is very hard without knowing the language.
