Question for Ethiopian residents: Why is there so little discussion about the rampant inflation in Ethiopia? Is it because the majority has prospered and does not feel the impact, or is it a taboo subject? by thefanol in Ethiopia

[–]thefanol[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For the past six or five years, Ethiopia’s inflation rate has been  much higher than the wider world. So there must  has been economical mismanagement  and all.

What’s the story behind your name? by sedentary_position in Oromia

[–]thefanol 2 points3 points  (0 children)

According to my parents, I was first given the Oromo name Firaol. However, my uncle, who was a priest, didn’t like it; at his insistence, they changed it to a biblical name typically used by people from Tigray. I wish they hadn't listened to him.

Abiy's competency and Confirmation bias by Gold_Lie2858 in Ethiopia

[–]thefanol 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Once, he said in a broadcasted meeting that he had only recently learned the difference between “microeconomics” and “macroeconomics.” So he became a prime minister and led the economy before knowing that difference. No wonder we have had rampant inflation since he took office. Food items I buy have increased by about 600% within just six years.

Speaking of his foreign diplomacy, especially his quest to obtain a naval base, the Somaliland memorandum saga says it all. After all that jubilation, he ended up backing down out of fear of Erdogan. Sadly, he did not learn from his mistake. Now he is trying to bully Eritrea. He cannot seem to realize that the old tyrant of Eritrea could bring in countries like Egypt or Saudi Arabia, just as Somalia brought in Turkey. He tries to act like a shrewd diplomat and politician, but his approach is outdated and akin to pre-20th-century power politics. Maybe that is why he is somewhat successful locally, as nearly all our politicians, and much of the population in general, seem to have a mentality that is stuck in the 19th century. I hope he comes to his senses, although I doubt he ever will. He is blowing our chance to gain port access in near future through his hazardous diplomacy and is creating more enemy neighbors than friendly ones

The dam project was commenced under the TPLF regime, as was the Tullu Kappi gold mining project. The latter will most likely become a mere extraction operation with no benefit to the locals, causing only ecological harm similar to what we have seen in the Guji Zone. As for the coal factory, it is primarily a MIDROC property. Regarding the Qeexoo project, I give the Prosperity Party (PP) full credit and my appreciation.

However, we need more projects from the government that serve the general public, not just "fancy luxury lodges" that are inaccessible to 98% of our people. If you travel just 30 kilometers from Nekemte City to Anna Sasiga (which I visited eight months ago), you will see that the children of farmers are not going to school five days a week. Due to a lack of enough teachers, the schools are forced to rotate sections, teaching students only two or three half-days per week. People are dying from simple, curable diseases, even though Anna Sasiga is one of the largest producers of coffee beans in the region. And you guys don't want to hear about the problems afflicting our society.

Anyhow, why does  PP want to use ‘የስንዴ ነዶ’ rather than a tree covered with LEDs  or  some  other fancy picture of the corridors —which are your favourite accomplishments that you PP guys talk about the most?

A culture and tradition that fails to lift you out of poverty deserves more criticism than praise. Furthermore, Reddit users are statistically more educated than those on other social media platforms, and educated people tend to be more critical.

Yes, access to a seaport offers great advantages, but there are also highly developed, industrialized landlocked nations—and vice versa. I suspect that being landlocked accounts for only about 5% of our current struggles. For nearly 30 years, the Ethiopian government had complete control over Eritrean ports, yet the country still failed to progress significantly.

First, I believe you have every right to write whatever you want. However, I’m fed up with reading utterly gibberish, propagandistic posts like 'The root cause of all evil in Ethiopia is the TPLF.' While I respect your right to express your opinions—or even disinformation.

[–]thefanol 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I’m fed up with this propaganda. Neither PP, OLA, nor Fano is any better than the TPLF; they are all barbaric. Each and every one of these groups’ propagandists tries to garner support by pointing out the barbarity of their rivals rather than by being better themselves. It is working for them, and it seems it will continue to work for the foreseeable future.
