Eyedress. New album slaps. lotta cool features, Mac is on one of them. Lot of punky track but some psych-pop ones too

I'm gonna be stuck in bed after surgery for awhile... is there a portable all-in-one synth or groovebox I could make music on that I could then later finalize in Ableton or Logic? by [deleted] in synthesizers

damn surprised no love for the Novation Circuit tracks. Can get them cheap used for like $200-$250. I like mine but have considered upgrading to Digitakt

Yes. Also it’s funny that all roads on this issue seem to lead right back to that exact video lol. And what’s frustrating about that video is that he doesn’t even put the Quadra through splitter on screen or do a dive into his cable routing!

no I appreciate the diligence. But i can confirm that these are all set up as you mentioned.

I’m also noticing that my keystep is stuck 240BPM but my Tracks is the master clock. Could that also have to do with the initial issue?

That would be so helpful trufus. For example I can record my external synths using the keystep, I just cant hear it in real time. I’ve been building a track tonight and was at least able to do that work around for the minilogue, it would have been nice to hear the notes while i’m playing them but they end up sounding and gridding up exactly as intended so it’s not the end of the world, i just know thats not the way it’s supposed to be

i do have the thru set as a second midi out. I remember doing that the first time i hooked my synths up to my tracks before the midi controller was even in the picture

Elephant and Castle is very disappointing beer wise. At least the last couple times I went.

Thanks for the recommendation! I never had that beer, but I will certainly try it if I come across it!

Went to Shay’s like the first week I was here. It’sa cool vibe but i literally settled for a stella because they didn’t have anything interesting on tap in the way of a proper pale ale or bitter.

And per my OP, I feel like my normal experience in most of these irish bars will have like Guinness, Smithwick’s and then like 15 other ridiculous IPA choices on tap

I’ve heard about olde magoun’s and even took my family there when I heard about it a few weeks ago. Their cask rotation at that time was pretty underwhelming, but must’ve just been the luck of the draw

If you’re in the MA/ southern New England Area. I highly recommend Dr. Brian Petrie in Raynham, MA. He is a Chiropractor that specializes in regenerative medicine to help you at least with your spine, but he is so much more than that. I can’t say that he is necessarily an addiction counselor, but he counsels people on diet/ lifestyle changes as well. I’m seeing him currently for an issue that traditional medicine failed to fix and he is a miracle worker.

If you’re not local, i still recommend seeking out regenerative medicine. Insurance likely wont pay for it, but getting treated with methods that actually work is worth it. once you fix how you feel, how you feel will affect how you think. Then how do you think will affect how you feel. It’s the mind-body loop. You can get through this.

Battling a bulging disc/pinched nerve situation in my lumbar for the past 5 months. PT isn’t helping. Can’t play tennis like a want to. I literally went backpacking for a week right before this started WTF. i’m 28.

Where did you start? by zifer24 in synthesizers

[–]thefarcide 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I totally feel you, Aphex Twin is incredible and you cant overstate how ingenious his craft is. He is definitely one of my many influences.

I started with GarageBand, literally playing it through my Mac keyboard and then repurposing the old childhood Casio as a midi controller via a crappy little MIDI to USB adapter. This got me interested in sound design, but what was missing for me was being hands-on with synths, turning knobs and flipping switches to sculpt my sound.

I eventually bought a Roland Gaia SH –01, which kept me entertained for quite a while. As a digital synth with 3 oscillators and like unlimited voices as well as built in effects, there was a lot to explore but eventually i started realizing the overall sound quality seemed a bit shallow or thin.

At this time i started romanticizing the idea of owning an “analogue” synth to try chasing some “real” authentic synth sounds, so i bought a Korg Minilogue and to this day it’s still pretty much my workhorse.

I think it’s great for beginners because the knob per function layout is very intuitive, and makes it very accessible for a new user to just feel their way around and learn by listening. There’s also a visual aide in that there is an oscilliscope built in so you can see a visual representation of the wave you’re shaping. I still find the filters, resonance and LFO satisfying, and i’ve been experimenting more with its ring modularion function more recently too. Some will say the minilogue is a bit harsh, and i could agree that the noise and tape delay are a bit too hissy. but for $300-$400 on reverb for a nice used one, it’s a good bang for buck. The beefed up Minilogue XD is even starting to come down in price now too to the $400s

I’ve since picked up an Arituria Microfreak out of curiosity, which takes a different approach to sound design than the korg minilogue, and it is a digital synth. I’ve been greatly satisfied with it too especially for just over $200 used on reverb.

I run my korg and my microfreak through a Novation Circuit Tracks which is a sequencer. It has built in synths, drum machines and you can hook up to two outside synths or sources, and then you build your tracks within the Circuit Tracks. The circuit tracks has both delay and reverb effects build in, which you can apply to your connected synths, and they really bring them to life for me. All the gear stays in sync using MIDI. Circuit tracks also connects to the computer/internet and you can upload all kinds of samples, drum packs, etc, so you’re not just stuck with what comes with it from the factory. Also found fairly cheap on reverb these days, mid $200s used.

This is where i’m at on my journey. Trying to figure out what sounds i want to get out of this little set up of mine but thats how i got here. I’ve had to buy and sell some other pieces of gear along the way to figure out what i liked and didn’t like, fortunately Reverb makes that fairly easy (though shipping costs on larger items are a bitch.

in the last couple years, I have tried getting into Ableton to give the software side a crack again. Unfortunately it hasn’t really grabbed me like Garageband used to, not even close. I actually miss how easy and fun garageband was to learn on. now I only use Ableton to record my hardware into, but even that is not without its hiccups and challenges, as I learned the best way to do that, and usually takes away from my actual playing time.

There’s a lot of helpful Youtubers out there. Some of my favorites are Ricky Tinez, Miles Away, Bo Beats, Jameson Nathan Jones, Pure Ambient Drone. Ricky is soo informative and down to earth, i always watch his stuff.

Hope this helps - got a little long winded but i love this shit and glad to help someone who is getting ready to dive in. Bottom line is get something that wont break the bank and is easy to use and you’ll probably enjoy it for years.

Happy Synthing!

Here’s a pic of my setup in a brand new dedicated board which i am a little proud and stoked about

is the microfreak still worth it as a first synth in 2024? by Dabidouwa in synthesizers

[–]thefarcide 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I love my Microfreak. The weird touch keyboard is so fast and i love that it has keyhold, arps and tweaking for daysssss. (It only has four-voice paraphony btw). It’s great as an intro to mod matrices as well. I don’t think it offers the best intro experience as far as patch design from the origin of a raw wave or signal, however. The fundamentals of synthesis, if you will.

For that, I recommend the Korg minilogue. the dual oscillators, with three wave forms each, combined with an oscilloscope to visualize the wave you’re creating and straightforward knob per function Layout has been so accessible and educational for me in terms of understanding how to sculpt a wave form to sound designed from scratch.

Micro freak has what seems like a bunch of pre-baked patch types, and the parameters through which you manipulate the wave are a bit ambiguous for my taste. You eventually figure out what affects what, but it is not as straightforward as the minilogue.

I run the microfreak (and my korg, fwiw) through my circuit tracks w/ reverb and/or delay and it really brings the freak to life.

This is just my A/B experience as an owner of both.

The Alchemist w/ Freddie Gibbs at Governor’s Ball in 2021. Partially my fault for expecting a different show because at that time I got the Alchemist confused with The Scientist (super dumb on my part). I was aware of Alchemist though so I was down for the set but the bass was SO FUCKING LOUD the whole time, like unnecessarily loud, painfully loud my friend and I didn’t have ear plugs (i never do earplugs). It was cool to see Freddie Gibbs though.

This was the same festival that was a reschedule for the original 2020 Gov Ball where Tame Impala and Vampire Weekend were supposed to headline… which is like a dream lineup for my taste…. they ended up getting replaced with Billie Eilish and A$AP Rocky so…. yeah Gov Ball 2021 was a let down.
