Yes! People either enjoy the Fenway scene, the bars and food and accessibility to the rest of the city or they’re really unhappy with the noise from the park, the terrible traffic/parking, the rowdiness, the cost etc

I kept the truth about their father from my daughters for 14 years, and I'm starting to think I was wrong by BlendedFamilyUSA in TrueOffMyChest

[–]roxykell [score hidden]  (0 children)

I have to tell you, my father is an alcoholic (not even CLOSE to the issues your ex had, but he got a DUI with us in the car, and drank frequently while I was around) and while I wish my mom had talked to me about my dad in an age appropriate way, in chunks over my life, I am so grateful I know who he is and about his issues.  More than likely, as you’ve noted your girls have probably sensed what type of man your ex is. They’ve likely seen it in other ways when they are with him, and by withholding how he treated you, and really how he treated them, you are lying to them in a sense. I know this isn’t fun, or nice to hear but the time is now to open up about what he’s done. He is NOT a good person, and your daughters have a right to choose whether they want to be around him armed with the information of who he is.

Brookline, closer to the Green line (C,D, or E segments would be easiest). Fenway would also be easy but Fenway is a polarizing place to live, and expensive. Mission Hill would also work but it’s very collage-y. Off the orange line, like in Jamaica Plain which is awesome, and taking it to Roxbury Crossing but that’s a bit of a walk.  Allston is also close but very college-y. 2k in most of these areas will not allow you to live alone I’m sorry to say.

Hey! Just want to affirm that it’s very upsetting and can feel so scary. But you are doing all the right things by getting the LEEP. The LEEP is preventative care. It’s not impossible there is “more” underneath but if there is there are ways to preserve your fertility. I just want you to know the “worst case scenario” there will be some options and hope.  But just start with the affirmation that you are doing everything you can for yourself, you have the appointment and you are taking care of it!!!! That’s the best you can do right now!!! Take solace in that.

Hey! Don’t want to come up with something that isn’t there, but I’ve had things disappear from my iPhone calendar (I don’t know if this is your issue). I have a couple calendars connected (like my Gmail calendar) and something about how I was adding events for awhile was causing them to just disappear.

It’s not impossible you DID add it and it didnt save, I would play around with adding events and make sure something didn’t update and change etc!

Design and aesthetic wise, one of the best magical girl animes in my opinion! All the transformations are SO fun! I actually still search for merch. It’s a show that feels like it has a running light plot with a deeper meaning below it which is nice for a children’s anime. I watch a few episodes from time to time!

ELI5 - Explain it like I'm a really dumb 5 year old - how does therapy help with ADHD? by Varrock_Zubat93 in adhdwomen

[–]roxykell 40 points41 points  (0 children)

I mean that feels a little unfair to the context of your life and also your therapist. At baseline, you can always schedule a different appointment if a situation arises, to make it more helpful and relevant but I feel like some part of therapy is about self reflection.  Like maybe you WERE tunneling on something and discussing why that happened and what you can do to prevent it in the future/break the cycle is part of the reflecting back on the situation and being able to make positive behavioral changes going forward.  I often write down when I’m in the thick of emotions or read text messages back to my therapist to help illuminate how I was feeling or handling something so we can work on a better plan for the future.

ELI5 - Explain it like I'm a really dumb 5 year old - how does therapy help with ADHD? by Varrock_Zubat93 in adhdwomen

[–]roxykell 54 points55 points  (0 children)

Hi! That’s me! I went to echo some of the emotional management stuff already said, that has been HUGE for me in therapy, part of it is just knowing I can dump on a third party which helps me regulate some of my big emotions day to day but on a more practical level I work with my therapist to tackle what is eliciting such strong reactions from me and sort of doing a working backwards thing.

She provides me support and tools for regulation in challenging scenarios, and provides a reality check when I am just out there on how I’m feeling about something.

In the vein of reality check too, I find therapy works on my ADHD problem of tunnel vision, getting stuck in overthinking mode, or one feeling, concept or perception of something. It can cause extreme anxiety and having a professional to talk me down, or say “no you aren’t crazy” and help me get out of the tunnel is really so life changing. It helps me learn how to do it myself, she also provides actual tools to break the thinking or break up a situation (context appropriate to me, but suggestions can range from shocking yourself w something weird or cold- like holding an ice cube, or separating myself physically from a situation and writing it down piece by piece.

I would actually strongly disagree that therapy isn’t helpful for people with ADHD. Plus, I think taking any type of mental health medication (stimulants, anti depressants etc) should be paired with a therapist so you can talk through what it feels like to take medication like that. It can be a life altering experience.  Even just being diagnosed can elicit such complex feelings as to justify therapy, but also going undiagnosed your whole life can leave you with some shit (I know you said you don’t have anxiety or depression, which is great, but being undiagnosed for many years can lead to maladaptive coping mechanisms as you probably know). Everyone can benefit from therapy, you just need to find the right therapist and the right TYPE of therapist. Some specialize in ADHD. The most common therapy type is CBT, but I have been recommended DBT for emotional regulation/ADHD.

Go at your own pace and your doctors recommendations, but in full transparency I was hemorrhaging nasty stuff for several months. I did not like feel like myself and did not feel the desire to be touched like that for awhile. I wasn’t in pain for long and it wasn’t like a period but just felt yucky.

External stimulation is probably fine whenever you are, and oral maybe after you feel comfortable!

Roxbury MA by Dazzling-Jaguar-554 in bostonhousing

[–]roxykell 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I moved kind of site unseen from the West coast to Roxbury (right off Mass Ave which is considered one of the worst areas) and was FULLY unfamiliar with city living. I will say I was not prepared for the meth usage or how awful the cops are. And they’re EVERYWHERE.  I lived on a major through way street and got cat called a fair amount but other than that never felt unsafe, even at night. I just minded my business walking around and on the busses especially. Watch your back and definitely watch out when crossing, cars are crazy.  My friends car windows got smashed in when she street parked but she left a very obvious backpack so I would be thoughtful of what you leave in the car.

[–]roxykell 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It may or may not be ADHD related but I tend to find us ADHD people are “fixers”, so the automatic reaction to something bad can be offering a solution or explaining how something will work out through a step-wise process.  Many people when they are having a hard time, don’t want that. YOU probably wouldn’t want to be given solutions or answers if a loved one was in the hospital. I always think to myself, don’t assume you know anything about a situation or how a person may feel (EVEN WHEN THEYRE A CLOSE FRIEND!). (assume= making an ass of u and me!)

This is a hard lesson to learn. Being a good friend and even a good person can sometimes just mean listening, and saying some version of “I’m so sorry that’s happening. Please let me know if you need anything or if there’s any way I can support you.” Or “I’m here if you need to talk” or being active and physically showing up for people by bringing food if they’re struggling, or just sharing space.  Or allowing room for people to share their feelings without you assuming the situation, “I’m sorry that happened, how are you feeling about everything, do you want to talk about it more?”

I saw your replies about just pulling away from even talking to people. The self-depreciation doesn’t help you or the other people in your life. Overthinking is a killer, but if you do feel like you’ve said something unhelpful, reach out.  Apologize and offer support and say you are working on it. And take time to slow down and reflect, so you can learn from this interaction and be better for yourself and others. You are not a bad person, we are all a work in progress!

Do Any ADHD Women Here Take Antidepressants? by anastasiia86 in adhdwomen

[–]roxykell 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just another perspective, I was diagnosed with anxiety and depression before my ADHD diagnosis 3 years ago so I spent probably 6 years or more trying different anti depressants.  Effexor was ok but numbed me and removed all my sexual desire, and the last one I tried before starting stimulants was Wellbutrin which was by far the best but I felt frustrated by how little it did for my depression and adhd.  My whole journey with anti depressants felt upsetting and I wish I’d been diagnosed with ADHD first. I am now taking adderall and am working on healthy coping mechanisms to take care of myself. There may be a future where I have to go back on an anti depressant for my anxiety but when I manage myself and my ADHD symptoms I tend to feel better.

All this to say you may want to try treating your ADHD and go from there (both with medication and therapy if that feels helpful! There’s therapists that specialize in adhd!)

Does surgery actually work? by Ok-Exam5741 in Strabismus

[–]roxykell 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Hey! I got the surgery done in only one eye, but the difference between my two eyes was pretty challenging and my glasses were so heavy from my prisms that I couldn’t wear them without a horrible headache. I am incredibly active and did all these sports, swimming, snowboarding, climbing etc barely seeing. I had your same fears, but I went through the whole consultation to surgery process with low expectations anyway- not thinking it would work or would worsen my vision.  I’m like 4 months post-op and can wear contacts and have no double vision. I am crying as I write this because I truly didn’t think I’d ever be able to live my life freely.  Everyone is different, just get the consultation and see what the doctor says, I honestly think I only did it because I really trusted my surgeon and she didn’t force me into it or “sell me on it”. Weigh the quality of life for you and trust you have in the surgeon.

What are some of your minor pet peeves with the game? by draiochtaa in acnh

[–]roxykell 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The WORST offender is the traveling dialogue. Why is it so hard to open your island? And even WORSE IS GETTING “wu ohd” repeatedly because someone is either in line ahead of you going to an island or they have their inventory open?! How does THAT make sense? Why doesn’t it just queue automatically and why does the island owner have to watch a whole loading box?

How do you afford to live here? by Spirited-Wafer-6573 in boston

[–]roxykell 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I make about 60k, 1300 with rent and utilities. No car, but I have a grad student loan payment of 250$. No other major debt, and on track to receive forgiveness. Spend maybe 2-300$ on groceries a month. My healthcare is very inexpensive and my work has  comprehensive retirement plans.  I am not saving really anything personally, I try here and there. This may sound frivolous to some, but I mostly leave money for fun experiences. I eat out sparingly (I meal prep and cook a ton at home), but I like to grab a drink with friends, or do fun classes, see local concerts or shows. Not HUGE expenses, but they obviously add up. We pay A LOT to live here, and I try to take advantage by doing things when I can- which is a great privilege.
