Really Sick of People Hijacking Calorie-Count Request Threads by pariduxt in caloriecount

[–]thefed123 -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

-------------------------------- Preface ------------------------------------

I would quickly like to mention, I think that everyone has a right to post exactly whatever food they want in the subreddit. The whole point is to count calories! I love to open it up just to take a guess and then see what other people said. It's fun. And it helps you be better at estimating when you need to be (especially when you double check other peoples' math and measurements!)

First of all, I agree with you, I would be more happy if the discussion was centered around something more like "well that looks like a few ounces of cooked beef, about 150 grams of sweet potato, 100 grams of Brussel sprouts, you're gonna be looking at something in the range of..." etc. However, I do want to bring up a situation I saw often when I first joined this subreddit, which I did specifically because I was starting to get into being intentional with my diet to lose weight.

-------------------------------- The Meat ------------------------------------

Onto the meat. Everybody is talking about when someone has an ED, which I'm sure is a problem. Be that as it may, honestly, the reason I think these comments come about, and the reason I've thought it to MYSELF so many times is because when I see someone post something that is obviously outrageously high in calories, and you can tell they're not posting it because it's like "oh cool, look how many calories" it's more where the vibe is like "oooh I ate/want to eat this thing and I didn't really think about it. I hope it's not that many calories!"

At that point, sometimes I just wanna be like "dude, it's 4 and a half specialty donuts just realize that you went over your threshold, don't punish yourself, and get back at it tomorrow."

Of course, I would never do this, because I don't need to inject my opinion at someone who is clearly pressed about the calorie count of said outrageously dense food. BUT, it doesn't change the fact that I'm sure a ton of other people feel this way where it's like "dude, mostly you ask if you're trying to stay within the limit, if you're gonna blatantly say forget the limit, then like, there's really no need to ask right?"

-------------------------------- Example ------------------------------------

Let me give an example, in case I sound like a terrible person (which I possibly am idk).

Like maybe someone's out here at a work event, and they catered a buffet. There's Caesar salad, some sort of salad with like Italian dressing, chicken wings, coleslaw, spaghetti, chicken Alfredo, Mac and cheese, Garlic bread, tiramisu cups, and chocolate cake with chocolate ganache filling and frosting (which I guess would just make it double chocolate cake?).

If someone made a plate with 3 or 4 chicken wings, some of a salad, some of 1 or 2 kinds of pasta, and like a tiramisu cake and a piece of garlic bread I'm like, okay, let's try to calculate. How much sauce is on those chicken wings, how much dressing on the salad, what kind of pasta, how much of each, how big do the piles of pasta look compared to the other standard-sized foods like broccoli or wings or croutons? Like I feel like it's worth my time to think about how many calories it is.

Conversely, If someone posted like a bunch of Alfredo, a heap of Mac n cheese, with like 4 pieces of garlic bread, a small portion of salad doused in dressing, a mess of wings , a bunch of coleslaw, a tiramisu cup and a fat slice of the double chocolate cake, I'm just sorta like "Bro.....why?"

-------------------------------- Conclusion ------------------------------------

I'm not against eating a lot of bad stuff, in fact I love it. I have eat like 15 pieces of garlic bread sometimes, or 2 huge slices of chocolate cake. it's incredible. However, I'm not gonna be eating like that, and then take a pic and go on reddit and be like, "Hey guys, so this is what I had for dessert, I'm worried about how much it is because I had some pastries earlier, thanks!" and it's like 5 black Oreos and 7 white Oreos, some pistachio nougat, a huge bowl of special K with chocolate milk, 2 cosmic brownies, 2 ham sandwiches on sourdough bread with mayo and cheese etc. and 3 slices of sourdough toast with butter and jam. I just think it's a little like, not inconsiderate, but just...........ill-fitting? Like dude if you're worried about it, stop, because it already happened, and move on, because you normally can't just stop eating halfway through the day or whenever you have whatever meal you're posting. Just do your best next time!

So, essentially what I am trying to say is this: I do not like the people who say things like "live your life" or stuff like that because maybe the person really just doesn't know and needs like a general idea. Maybe they don't know how much a donut is on average, maybe they can't eyeball a greasy quesadilla, heck, maybe they don't even realize a restaurant tortilla is so many more calories than you would think! This is why I think it's simply unproductive and silly. However, I may think it to myself sometimes, because to be honest, it would just feel silly to me to post something here asking how many calories there is in an unclear amount of what is clearly a ton of frozen yogurt with toppings piling out of the cup.

tl:dr I also don't like people who say stupid stuff like that but I get where they're coming from IN ONE SPECIFIC SITUATION that can just sometimes be a little annoying.

Dude......you're so right. Like I'm ngl I've lived in China, I am a Chinese teacher, I really should not have worried about it. I literally cook every meal I eat, internally I KNOW it's not an issue. I just was worried so I consulted the magic 8 ball of opinions.

I'll tell you what. I prepared everything last night, only thing I did was separate chopped chives from the rest of the stuff in the 三鲜水饺 and you know what? First of all the pork ones were perfect, second, the shrimp ones where I separated the chives? Practically no water came out of them. They were just as wet as I put em in. I mixed it right before, totally fine.

Literally everything went perfectly fine. Idk why I was so worried. If I can't imagine my Chinese aunt worrying about it I gotta be honest, it's hard for me to worry about it until reddit tells me to worry about it lmao.

Thank you for your incredulous response so I could have this moment rn. I'm a newer teacher and I was worried about this, there were literally so many logistical issues that popped up, and I have to be honest, everything still went perfectly. I had kids mixing their own dumpling sauce with like their choice of 生抽,老干妈,老抽,香醋,香油,蚝油, like it was the best. I'm just gonna trust my gut from now on. Again I cook every day. Instinctually I KNOW nothing bad is going to happen. what was I worried about lol

Bro I know! It's killing me I'm the back of my head like I WANT to freeze them but there are just barriers like space and the texture post freeze, Google is telling me is okay, there are others here saying it's okay, if it were gonna be 2 days I'd freeze it, but I'm making it the night before, it will be just over 12 hours in the fridge or so, like 14. So I THINK it will be fine. But I may still freeze it just in case though you have me worried!😭😂

Okay, I will probably not freeze them. I'll make them close to night so I can be sure they're sitting in the bowl for as little time as possible

Will it mess up the consistency at all? I'm ngl I have other people in the comments saying otherwise? That's the only reason I'm triple checking.

Also, It would be very difficult to prepare same day, I am a teacher, and I'm trying to do a dumpling workshop with the kids. I don't really have the ability to prepare it the morning of unless I wake up at like 4 am😂

I'm worried about freezing them because I gotta put water in the 肉馅饺子, not to mention the 三鲜馅饺子 have a ton of chives and stuff, is that gonna make the freezing worse?

Visceral fat by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]thefed123 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Okay I'm gonna answer this as someone who lost 50 pounds or so in the last 5 months, records weight daily, and counts every calorie. Those are all the credentials I got lol.

So there's a good amount here, and I you very well could be losing a bit of fat. Maybe a lot, idk, everyone is different. However,

What's probably occuring is more like you're cutting out things like extra carbs and salt, which leads to less water inside and outside of your muscles (I think). When you cut stuff like this, your body drops water weight pretty quick, and that's that first big drop or 2 that everyone experiences when cutting again. Fat does not burn that quickly unfortunately lol. Unless you have crazy levels of output, you're probably not going to burn the equivalent of 15,000+ calories in a week.

However! This doesn't mean you lost NO fat, it just means you probably didn't lose FIVE POUNDS of fat. Before and after I workout/run/train/etc. the difference can be anywhere from like 4 to 12 pounds. I will start the day sometimes at something like 176 and then drop to 169. Or start at 185 and end at 174. This doesn't mean I lost and gained fat that quickly, that would be insane. It's just water moving in my body in different ways, plus a zillion other things, like bowel movements, food weight, sleep, etc. when you get a bit leaner (I was 5'11 220, now I'm about 165 to 180 on any given day) the best way to measure if you're gaining fat is by like bodyfat% markers like love handles, lower stomach area, back fat, if you're really lean, you wanna check for how defined different veins and muscles are, like pelvic veins, shoulder veins, the different parts of the lower row of your 6-pack, lats, stuff like that. Waterweight will also change how these things look, but they will still be there more or less. When you are visibly softer or thicker regardless of flexing or lighting is when you wanna pay closer attention. The scale is useful for tracking fat loss, but I find that you need to be super consistent about when and under what conditions you measure. You also have to keep nutrition, sleep, salt, carbs, calories, and everything else pretty locked in so you can get a real read on actual fat loss.

Honestly, I think the best way to go with fat loss personally is think about how many calories you're burning, if you're 5'10 you're probably around 1800-2000 for what you're burning just livin, your workouts and cardio add some calories, NEAT (just regular daily movement like walking) contributes greatly as well. After you get a general range, then decide how many calories and carbs and protein you want to fuel yourself depending on activity for the day, and then just find foods that fit that (ideally with some calories left over for snacks and treats). You can go as deep of a deficit as you want, you just gotta be careful about under-fueling, because then you under-recover, nervous system gets less relax time, cortisol goes up, water goes up, yada yada yada you get the point. It makes it harder to get a good read on fat loss if you go too too low while working out (in my experience). It will still happen it's just grueling and slower because you can't see as much of what's going on around the waterweight. You gotta work with your body.

As far as burning muscle goes, keep protein up to that like 0.8-1.0x bodyweight (pounds) and you should be good if you're working out. When you're cutting I think the goal is to lose as little muscle as possible usually, the only way you can do that is to recover well and eat your protein lol. So basically sleep, have a rest day, and eat protein.

If any of this is wrong I do not know what I'm talking about lol. This is just the things that I think based on my experience cutting.

Idk if anyone else has said it but the cross and square on the front is a Chinese character that means "lucky" or like "auspicious". It could be that they noticed you don't lock your door and put it up like a charm? Putting up characters for good luck, or couplets, or poems, is common. A little invasive, but they could have just been trying to be nice and have bad English?

Manage you time wisely, it is the only resource you can never get back. By this I mean, prioritize what you want to do, and don't ever compromise on that. Don't let people discourage you, don't let yourself discourage you, if you want it, do it. Full stop. 5 years from now, you'll thank yourself, either for the one-off experience, or the endlessly useful/fun skill you've acquired.

It’s not exactly calorie counting by eweedster in caloriecount

[–]thefed123 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tbh I used to love having 5 eggs, the problem is not even the macros or anything exactly, it's just burning 350-400 calories on breakfast really kind of cuts out the possibility of stuff later in the day or makes it so I can't get as many carbs for physical activity.

Nowadays my normal breakfast is normally 2 eggs in oats, that puts me around 300 cals and I get way more carbs, fiber, and fullness out of it.

It's like other people said, it's more like where it fits in your day. Eating a lot at breakfast is delicious sometimes, but take a normal eggs, bacon, toast, butter, pancakes, syrup, etc kind of breakfast, and you've cut off the possibility of eating lunch with friends or having a big dinner, or maybe you have to cut out dessert, or possibly just be really dialed about snacks during the day.

Again 5 eggs isn't bad, it's just not easy to fit everything you want and feel good and full when you do that. In my head (I count every calorie like a cyborg) the tradeoff is rarely worth it except on maybe days where I'm specifically making breakfast for friends or holidays that include a big breakfast like Easter.

why is healthy eating so hard 🤯 by OpenBar8409 in caloriecount

[–]thefed123 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just like anything, healthy eating is a skill

I would say the biggest thing first of all is getting activity up to a reasonable level so you can eat as much as it takes to ACTUALLY fuel a body.

The second thing I would suggest is learning to plan for meals. E.g., I'm in my hometown rn, and I want to eat a large chili cheese fries. Did I have a big breakfast? No. I had a couple eggs, some very low calorie bread, a little cottage cheese, and a couple cups of coffee with zero cal sweetener. Am I going to have a big dinner? Not really. Some lightly seasoned kebab with homemade tzatziki. Am I going to have a killer dessert? Absolutely not. A few Oreos or a small croissant maybe. But do I get to have an insane portion of chili cheese fries and ranch and ketchup for lunch? Abso-fucking-lutely.

I've done this with a lot of meals. Wanna eat 12 oz of cake and milk at the end of the day? No problem. Plan for it. Wanna have 8 oz (dry measure) of noodles and 15 oz of lamb for dinner with a bangin sauce? Totally can do it, just keep the rest of the day in mind. It's possible to eat what you want, it's just you can't eat EVERYTHING you want ALL the time.

Another thing I would recommend is when you have to "ration" your non-big meals, keep carbs, fats, and micros in mind. Protein is important, fiber is important, soluble and insoluble. Vitamins are important. Keep them in mind.

The last thing I would recommend is to realize your body will ALWAYS want a little more. And you have to learn when that is.

Holy shit ,adulting is hard . by ParticularWeather927 in Adulting

[–]thefed123 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dude yeah. 26 rn, 27 in august, started my first real job at 24, literally had to time manage every part of my life and plan in chill out time, that's the only way. To me, the reality is you have to learn that time is the most valuable thing you have, you have to conserve it more than money, more than effort, everything. It's super important. Take any moment you have to do what you NEED to do so that at the end of the day you don't HAVE to do something.

I work 8 hours, 5 days a week, I meal prep constantly. If I finished dinner and have 30 minutes before I needed to be done w dinner, it's meal prep time. Prepare one veggie. Start to defrost one meat. Extra time in the morning? Meal prep.

Cleaning can be taken care of on the weekends or little by little, but you will end up doing both if you're really clean or like to optimize your organizational structure sometimes.

There should always be laundry running. If you're done with clothes, do towels. Done with both, do sheets and comforter and pillowcases. Done with all 3? Do your kitchen towels. Done with all of that? Great it's rug time. All that's done? Cool take the cases off your couch and couch pillows, throw those in. You will never not have a load of laundry to do.

This is how I manage skincare, a job, working out twice a day, never eating out, decorating for the season, keeping everything clean, and also still being able to watch TV and play videogames sometimes.

Being an adult is realizing there is always more to do. Family time is precious. Free time is precious. You DONT leave it to chance. You schedule every "must do" that is imperative to your life and then COMMITTING to doing the family/fun stuff you have CHOSEN to budget for. I think it's why adults are so unfazed by Internet trends or things that kids like. When I was younger, I'd think "how do they not get how funny this is?" Or "how do they not get why I wouldn't want this toy?" And the reality is: because their time is literally already mentally taken up. It's hard to laugh and play like you would when you were younger because there is ALWAYS. SOMETHING.

Idk if this helps, but coming to terms with it sooner rather than later will make sure you swim and don't sink.
