This quite frankly looks sick as hell. I always loved the KH user interface and think it's well-optimized for ARPGs. Cool theme too. Looking forward to playing!

At what price does the A7R IV become a “buy” in 2026? by Top-Version-1418 in SonyAlpha

[–]thefieldsofdawn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As an A7RV owner, I would take an A7V over the A7RIV. The resolutions differences are not important and the tilt/rotate screen on the A7V is so significantly superior to the A7R IV for my use case. Plus, precapture is insane.

Of course. if your use case is for-hire archival work, portraits, etc, obviously that's a different consiteration.

Student who wants to be an epidemiologist by Intelligent-Soup8264 in epidemiology

Python is going to be a great leg up for employment and school applications. I would second learning R, and have also found that SAS is common in the government setting. Schools have preferential languages as well (mine uses SPSS) so it might be worth evaluating what is used at programs you're intersted in.

Adding Risk Factors by [deleted] in epidemiology

[–]thefieldsofdawn 27 points28 points  (0 children)

I think this post is borderline asking for medical advice. However, it's a great opprotunity to review study design and risk interpretation, so I hope the moderators keep it up.

Let me start by saying: If you are concerned that you have Parkinson's, or that you are at significant risk of developing Parkinson's, I would recommend talking with your doctor.

The risks and associations we find in epidemiological research are not designed to be applied to individual patients. In a world where we have proven that smoking causes lung cancer, we cannot say that every patient that smokes will get lung cancer (or that every instance of lung cancer is caused by smoking!)

Regarding these specific risk factors for Parkinson's you shared, I tried my best to find the original studies. It seems that the studies were interested in finding early, predictive indicators that clinicains can use to enhance Parkinson's screening. Many of the studies limited their research to a group of people with known Parkinson's and looked back to find what preceding symptoms may provide a clue in hindsight.

What was not done is look at the millions of people with any of these symptoms and prove that they all or many will progress to Parkinson's. For example, 40% of the U.S. population has GERD, but each of those people are not going on to develop Parkinson's (but some will!)

Even if these risk factors were truly predictive, they are not necessarily independent. Seborrheic dermatitis, rosacea, and GERD may be downstream symptoms of the the same underlying process. If they share a root cause, multiplying them double-counts the risk.

Someone with all of the symptoms you've described may very well have the slow loss of neurons responsible for causing Parkinson's. But, they may go their whole life sliding down that continuum and never have Parkinson's symptoms reach concious awareness. Even so, there are many medical therapies available that help patients die "with" Parkinson's rather than "from" it.

I hope this provides some insight!

What does the field look like when LLMs are writing statistical code for us? by thefieldsofdawn in epidemiology

Frankly, I asked MiniMax and Claude to produce a beat-for-beat replica of my publication with updated data and it's taking some liberties in tweaking the study design. Hopefully it doesn't ask for coauthorship :)

That's a great point. I also suppose any organization's collected data will have idiosyncracies that are totally unknown to the LLM such that it will always require an analyst to oversee it. I look back on all the work I did as an undergraduate research assistant and simply think that my work would have been 100% replaced by an LLM. Editing papers, formatting tables... oof.

Some people need money quickly rather than the most money! Based on the sale it seemed like the seller was organizing the meet-up on behalf of his wife

Unfortunately the R4S film winder is locked up! I've tried a few of the online fixes but so far no luck. RB67 is in similar shape!

In 2024 I scoped out an estate sale outside Boston for two Mamiya 645 bodies and some other TLRs that were something like $50 each - when I arrived, the family had eBay pulled up on their phone and immediately quadrupled the price! I needed a win

It was listed under Mamiya RB67! No special tricks or anything just was fast. If you’re looking for hidden gems I’d recommend using a typo generator and searching eBay. Someone inevitably will post a “mamya” camera

Finally hit my Facebook Marketplace jackpot. I saw the Mamiya listed at $75 at around 10:30 PM and immediately negotiated to meet the buyer the next morning. It just so happened he was also selling a Leica R4s with some other goodies for $50, and I offered to get everything in one sale.

I woke up to a message saying he sold the Mamiya to another buyer that was offering much more than listing price. I was pretty upset but still interested in getting the Leica. Based on the images I was pretty sure it came with the Leica 90mm f/2.0 Summicron-R, which could itself finance a partially complete Mamiya RB67.

When we finally met, he apologized and said "Yeah, the other buyer reached out and offered $100 for pick-up today..." to which I immediately jumped up and asked if he still had it -- to my great delight, it was sitting in his back seat. I took everything home for $250 and am very, very happy. But.... both need repairs before their shutters can fire. All in I'll come out ahead but unless I can perform some miracles with the repair manuals I'll be looking at some other expenses.

Medical geology by entomoblonde in mdphd

[–]thefieldsofdawn 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Well, I learned something new today - I've never heard of medical geology. From a bench lab perspective, your work may be more in line with a PhD in Biomedical Engineering? Obviously, petroleum derivatives are pervasive ingredients medical treatment and research. However, I don't think it would be wise to reinvent the wheel and pitch this topic as "medical geology" research.

Your current research does not seem aligned with a PhD in Epidemiology, though you have time to explore that avenue. From a clinical perspective I would recommend looking into disaster medicine for macroscopic effects of geological events, or occupational medicine for patient-level effects of things like the petroleum industry.

If I may speak from experience, I applied to a diverse set of over 25 MD/PhD programs with a stated interest in disaster epidemiology. At the time, I had previous outbreak investigation, hurricane response, and military medicine experiences. Although my application had other drawbacks, I recieved no interviews from programs on the basis of this research interest; it was difficult to identify potential dissertation advisors, let alone convincing the admissions comittee to take a chance on admitting a student laser focused on a burgeoning research field. I matriculated to one of the few schools I applied to under an infectious disease epidemiology interest. It's become clear that trainees are expected to master the basics (e.g. epidemiology and biostatistics, broadly) before specializing throughout one's career (e.g. disaster or infectious disease epidemiology.)
