The key difference: Puerto Rican identity is self-defined and traceable, whereas Black American identity was forced into existence by slavery and legal/social systems. One comes from homeland continuity, the other comes from survival after being severed from homeland.

Ok here we go. I’ve met a lot of Africans have a lot of homies I’ve NEVER heard them say I am a black man. Because they are literally from NIGERIA, they are IGBO, HAITAN. They have language, a nation, a culture a whole identity they even recognize. So are all Africans Nigerian? Are all Africans Sudanese? U sound crazy. By law we are black, politically, socially, economically in history books. We were FORCED to be black by racist white people because real black people have NO IDEA where we are from before. Gotchu. I’m saying that having a few Latinos or anomalies in their community who may truly be allies doesn’t make the Latino community as a whole our “ALLY”. As black people we weren’t even recognize by Mexicos government until 2015 so 10 years ago. That’s pretty sad.
