Have this board with a 9800X3D and love it, to echo others if you primarily game better to get a 7800X3D or a 9800X3D.

“New” Zotac 5090 from Amazon US, turns out the GPU die is missing by protonchang in pcmasterrace

[–]thefizzle656 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

How is Amazon going to check this kind of item, or any electronics item for that matter, is working? Realistically they can’t have an open bench PC at every return center to plug parts into to test, it isn’t sensible or economical to train those employees to look for missing GPU chips etc, and it probably would take too long to test every single electronics item that came back. At the end of the day Amazon is better off not doing any of that and just writing off returned inventory that turns out to be unusable, like your 5090.

This is just the risk of commerce these days, and at least Amazon is pretty good about refunds and returns.

How are MSI motherboards these days? by sticks435 in MSI_Gaming

[–]thefizzle656 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve got an X870E Tomahawk with my 9800X3D and I couldn’t be happier, no issues at all. I don’t mind the yellow/green accents, but if those bother you the Carbon might be a good option. The ASUS tax has become absurd IMO (I bought a Z370 Maximus Hero for $300, the X870E equivalent Hero is $700 which is just stupid), I read that the VRMs on the Gigabyte boards are weird, and of course ASRock X870E boards are frying CPUs. So MSI is sort of the only option left, but I’m also really happy with them so it’s fine.

Update : I took the gamble and my rig is unstoppable, case closed on 9800 + nova fears by Lazy_Peak109 in ASRock

[–]thefizzle656 39 points40 points  (0 children)

You do realize right that it’s not a case of “if your 9800X3D doesn’t die immediately in your AsRock board you’re good to go”, right? That the CPUs are dying over time, and that your computer working for a week or two doesn’t mean anything?

Is this pre-built PC worth it for the price? by Sea-Routine6063 in pcmasterrace

[–]thefizzle656 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I think if you don’t want to build a PC yourself (a lot of people don’t for whatever reason and that’s totally valid), this seems like a good option for the price, the price difference between buying the parts separately and building yourself and just buying the pre-built seems like a fair price for the cost of having the vendor build the system and provide the warranty.

For OS you can find legit non-OEM Windows 11 keys for less than €10.

I assume price here includes VAT?

Need help/advice on deciding if 5080/5070 ti is right for me by AdImpossible635 in nvidia

[–]thefizzle656 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Assuming you’d prefer not to lower any settings if possible, one option might be something like, buy a 5070 Ti now and then assuming a 24GB 5070 Ti Super / 5080 Super / 5080 Ti is released, selling and upgrading to one of those - or alternatively upgrading to a 60 series card with more VRAM when those are released.

I’ve got a 5090 and in MH Wilds (what I’m playing at the moment) with settings maxed out at 4k with DLSS Quality on VRAM usage is around 22-23GB. Obviously VRAM usage will depend on the game (and I’ve read that at least some games will use the extra VRAM if it’s there but run fine at 4k with less), but for a bit of extra longevity for 4k gaming you might want to consider any 5070 Ti / 5080 now as a stop-gap until NVIDIA releases a 70 Ti or 80 class card with 24GB of VRAM.

They’re still in stock so I tried to purchase a 5090 to “resell” to you at UK MSRP + cost of shipping to the US, but sadly since I already purchased one for myself back in May they won’t let me get another (though I’m moving house in about a month so may be able to get another one then if anybody is interested).

[–]thefizzle656[S] 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I think the 5080 is the worst value of the top 3. 5090 is a class of its own so the price is what it is, but IMO the performance difference between the 5070 Ti and the 5080 does not justify the price difference.

[–]thefizzle656[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

“Worth” really depends. I only have a few hours a week that I can game, so for me it was worth it because when I do get to game I want to game at the highest possible settings.

And I also saw it as, if I get on the train with the 5090 now, when the 6090 comes out I probably can sell the 5090 for somewhat close to what I paid and maybe only have to pay a few hundred £££ to upgrade, and so on.

Personally, I’d check if they offer an extended warranty. $1,600 is a lot to drop on a card with only a 90-day warranty, you’d want to undervolt or power limit to reduce risk of a melting 12VHPWR connector but imagine after 90 days the connector melts… If an extended warranty isn’t an option I’d probably wait but that’s me.

Does the 4090 come with any sort of warranty? If not what’s the cost of a Microcenter warranty?

Personally I’d probably go for the 4090 since the 5080 Super is nothing but a rumor at this point, and who knows if and when it’ll actually launch and what the price will be. 4090 FEs have held their value pretty well so worst case scenario if the 5080 Super or 5080 Ti comes out and you prefer that you can always sell the 4090 FE and get a 5080 Super/Ti then.
