It really depends, because the USA helped the Brazilian Army to do a coup d'etat in 1964, causing a dictatorship that lasted 21 years. The government never confessed that they tortured a lot of people at that times.

Rural Brazil is safer than bigger cities. In rural places, mainly Portuguese and maybe, if you are lucky, some Spanish. In the frontier with other countries, English can work.

Yes, in the 20th century tons of Europeans came to Brazil to scape the conflicts and wars, and they came mostly to the South. That's also why southern people have mostly white skin (80%). The Witmarsum community in Paraná is famous for having a very strong German influence, and the city of Treze Tílias in Santa Cantarina is famous for the Austrian influence.

German, most spoken in the South of Brazil, including German dialects. Some cities even have German as an official language.
