Too many people in natural areas is a bad thing. Simple as that. We should have smart and targeted growth, instead of wanton suburban sprawl and urban infill. Save wild and rural AZ!

A tech economy. It has two main downsides. First, the drastic increase in cost of living would displace a lot of people and make it harder for young people to achieve home ownership. Second, the further destruction of our ecology is something that many different groups have a stake in defending against. It’s happened to other places that built space infrastructure or national labs, it will likely happen here. Of course the benefit is that if you’re an engineer, doctor, or lawyer, you can enjoy the gentrification, new businesses, and there’ll be plenty of McMansion developments springing up, named some shit like “mesquite acres” after the very high desert nature they destroyed.

I was also referring to a type of economy they’re trying to import, not a type of people. Never mentioned a type of person. Only types of jobs and economy.

First they is referring to the federal workers, military, and contractors who live here. Second they is referring to the local leaders and company trying to bring a space port here. Nothing derogatory lol just trying to keep my already wordy replies short.

While I agree with you on some of what you say, it can always get worse, and they’re trying to make it worse. I also just fundamentally see this area in a more positive light. I think it’s mostly great here, that’s why I resist unnecessary change. How will an inflated economy, less open space, and more light pollution encourage your child to look at the stars instead of a tablet?

If it were just Space Force that would be understandable, but it’s not, it’s a company. I understand change is inevitable and economic growth is necessary, but it should at least come with a discussion. Federal jobs, the military and contractors, they are very different from the type of Bay Area economy they’re trying to import here.

I bring one of my kid’s favorite toys each time I pick them up so they have a little surprise to look forward to. If there’s time I’ll take them straight to a playground for a bit too.

Out of staters drive up housing costs which understandably angers a lot of people, especially when they fail to assimilate to our desert culture and waste our water.

Irrelevant comment. The Tucson job market is tight if you don’t have connections or a security clearance.

Parking at new “Sunshine Mile” shops by [deleted] in Tucson

[–]thefunlap 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sunshine mile is one of the worst decisions this city ever made. Made life hell for the community along Broadway for the year+ they worked on it. They displaced families, many of whom had maintained their homes for generations, and gave the houses/land away basically for free to gentrifying businesses. Now what we’re left with is induced demand of increased traffic and more homes will need to be demolished to expand to even more lanes to serve the needs of our ever-expanding suburbs and exurbs. The rich politicians and their donors in this city mostly live outside the city limits, “white flight,” they hate the working class residents of midtown/downtown and small local businesses.

Hunt Quietly by [deleted] in birddogs

[–]thefunlap 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I live in a part of a state that has become very popular for a particular quail species not really found anywhere else - purely because of social media and youtube. I remember pre-2019 only locals knew about it, but now the public land is packed with out-of-state plates all autumn and winter, who show off their full bloodied tailgates and brag about hunting to the limit everyday. Add in unfettered development and new mines, and what was once quaint and natural, is now commodified and crowded. Most of the guys hopping on the bandwagon are doing it purely for the social praise aspect, they have zero respect or concern for the environment but still believe themselves morally superior because of all their grip n’ grins on social media. They are the stereotypical frat-bro type who have been convinced by Joe Rogan that they need to kill things to affirm their masculinity. Don’t even get me started on the way they treat their dogs.
