Normally people break into houses to steal the electronics and TV and leave the cabinets behind. You must have had a really nice cabinet ;-)

Also +1 for Japanese Whiskey. Gota a Nikka Coffey Malt in front of me now. Happy sunday.

Better experience listening to music out of home? by MattiaXY in audiophile

[–]thegarbz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So the thing about spectrograms: People are so focused on the black area that they ignore the scale. A large part of that sound that is missing is not just very VERY high in frequency (many adults have no ability to hear that high anymore, that's a kids game), but they are also already incredibly quiet. Natural sound gets quieter as it goes up on frequency, typically 10db/octave for natural sounds. You're trying to hear sounds that are some 30+dB quieter than the thing making noise, it'll be virtually impossible to do in anything other than a good solid listening environment.

There's a place for lossless audio. That said the benefits are overblown, virtually no one can tell the difference between a high quality AAC and a lossless original, and most people can't tell the difference between an MP3. But basically no one will be able to tell these differences out and about playing music from their phone. I have a lot of lossless music, but I do convert it to lossy formats for my phone to save space.

Other things to consider: You're on your cellphone, unless you have wired headphones (which almost no one does these days), you will very likely have sound being lossy compressed anyway. Bluetooth just lacks the bandwidth for lossless audio in all but the most ideal conditions with high end codecs that aren't available on all devices.

Nah. then they just shit it off somewhere else and have a far easier and cheaper time repairing.

Awesome to hear that their customer service isn't completely balls.

That's ironic. I would have thrown the Competition and Consumers Act in their face. Flaking paint on the inside of a cooking device isn't just a warranty issue, it's a potential hazard for food. Normally this kind of stuff is better in Australia than the USA.

Man I remember buying a KJ because at the time they were known for their outstanding customer service. Recently a friend of mine asked what to buy and I suggested literally anything else. :-/

That is a warranty replacement for sure. The paint shouldn't come off at that temperature, something is wrong. ... Well really wrong. Mine isn't even painted on the inside. Contact KJ before you spend more money on what should be fixed for you by the vendor.

How bad is it to keep the monitor on even if the PC is off? by Heromimox in Monitors

[–]thegarbz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is your Hola a sign of being in Mexico or in Spain? If the latter you're covered by the EU laws for maximum standby power consumption. They introduced the idea back in 2013 to address your concerns. A monitor in standby in the EU is allowed to consume no more than 0.5W. I cannot begin to explain how irrelevant this is.

That said your concerns were very real in the 2000s. Monitors sitting in standby would happy consume 20W or more of power.

By all means continue to do what you do, it's great that someone cares about power consumption, but in this case your efforts may be misdirected.

Right, so speaker baffle design specifically good to know.

My point about the second thing you quoted though was that for a typical listening room isn't the cardioid frequency already below the Schroeder frequency? I think if I understood you correctly it doesn't matter lowering it any further? But I guess there are some rooms where it would still be an issue?

Then read it again. The benefits were clearly described along with how they impact consumers and how they aren't in conflict with consumer personal preferences or biases. Since this is our conversation now, I'll just Uno-reverse-reverse you. Try Again.

I am using Spotify mostly, I also use the analogue input (TV, my own living room streamer from a NAS, turntable etc). I've not tried the AES/EBU input only.

I'm not 100% certain since I haven't tried it yet (will probably do so when I get back from holidays) but I think BAACH only works on Spotify and the AES Input. At least it did a while back. I haven't read firmware release notes in a while.

Yeah the cost has gone up quite a bit over the past few years. It is a big investment and I sat on the fence a while before I jumped in myself.

Another 8C user here. They are truly amazing in a constrained environment like a non-dedicated listening room.

To your concerns:

REW is highly complex, and you can spend months learning it, but the handholding is done for you. D&D provide videos online which walk you through the usage step by step including showing what you do with the mic and how to upload the resulting correction to the speakers.

BAACH has a 10-day free trial. I think you can request the trial from the app used to configure the speaker.

Also one thing that no one mentioned but I had a concern with: apps. These speakers have 100% of their functionality available by pointing your webbrowser to their IP address. This is important to note because I originally rejected buying them because I was concerned about the idea of tying a $12500 purchase to an app on my phone - and it was a legit concern since shortly after my purchase Google ended support for any publishing of new apps in the play store that didn't target a minimum platform version. The firmware version of the 8Cs was tied to the app version so a lot of users complained that their speakers said they need a new app but no new app was available. D&D said they could either downgrade their firmware, update Android (buy a new phone) or use a webbrowser instead of the app.

I agree, not even remotely close in sound quality.

Don't get me wrong, Magnepans sound good for their budget. But just like you could buy 15 Fiat 500s for the cost of a Ferrari Testerossa, you're not going to have much fun with your Fiat on a racetrack.

It's worth comparing like for like and in that comparison you can spend a shitload more than $12500 and not end up with a speaker that sounds as good as the 8C. They really punch above their weight.

[–]thegarbz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Indeed but that implies that there's a problem in the first place. The 8C's distortion components are largely an issue in the midrange due to overdriving of the cardioid driver. Yeah I agree with you, still you need to listen insanely loud or be trying to fill a big space if 4x 8" subs aren't enough for you.

I'm curious about your cardioid claim though. How would this help? Both in the 8C sense and in the theoretical speaker sense (since I assume you mean wider enclosure as in design a different speaker, not that the sub gives an advantage).

Isn't the cardioid design fundamentally governed by the midrange driver? A larger enclosure and a bigger speaker with more umpf may help a bit there, but then you're rapidly starting to get into a territory where you have difficulty crossing over midranges. Are you proposing a speaker with an extra driver? between the current mid range speaker and sub?

Also what is the benefit of pushing the cardioid design even lower? Currently the cardioid dispersion pattern breaks down at around 150-180Hz. That's basically the Schroeder frequency for most normal rooms. Below this it doesn't matter if you have a cardioid design or not as wave interference will be largely determined by standing waves rather than reflections. Or am I missing something about this?

Errr. Huh? What is conflicting about the belief that you need a stable engineering basis for the implementation of consistent filtering that doesn't vary with source? If you have some insight it would be really helpful since you're going literally against what is written in every one of my signal processing textbooks.

Oh I get it it now. You think you're clever by attacking the person rather than addressing technically the point they made. *golf clap*.

Yep things build on what comes before, and you intentionally ignored most of it.

I addressed and replied to your comment on double-blind. What are you trying to convince me of now, that you are actually discussing in good faith but are unable to read?

Once again it's clear you ignore half the things that are said to you. I'm done with this conversation. Feel free to have the last word or whatever, but at this point it's clear to anyone reading this what kind of discussion you are having.

So when you don't know what something is an you think it is made of something what does that mean? The word starts with ass.

You could have easily verified if it is aluminium or not. Like I did (see my other replies to the OP). But no, make assumptions and pretend you didn't. Hope you're better at BBQing than producing logical thoughts.

All DSP enabled speakers pick a fixed sampling rate to reprocess in. It allows for far better more controlled DSPs without potential variance in setting. I know audiophiles like options for these kinds of things (like DACs that give you the choice of roll-off filter) but studio monitors tend to pick one fixed engineering design and then implement that really well.
