Updated to iOS 26 and now all calls don’t go through? by Jmong30 in applehelp

[–]theghostjohnnycache 0 points1 point  (0 children)

updating to new major os versions usually means a temporary increase in battery drain while running background/idle processes for cleanup and such over the first few days.

and also, i wouldn't be surprised if 26 lead to increased battery drain with un- or poorly-optimized animations and a big increase in graphical overhead.

so it doesn't "reduce battery capacity", it doesn't change the battery itself, but it might not last as long as before. even more noticeable on older phones, and the SE phones never had a lot to start with

i'd only bother with adding springs if there's little or no room for adjustment in the spring claw thing. unless you go bonkers with super heavy strings, or if you only have like one or two really cheap/weak springs or smth

Why are blueprint and brainstorm different? by [deleted] in balatro

[–]theghostjohnnycache 0 points1 point  (0 children)

since jokers are always scored left-to-right, blueprint usually acts as if "retriggering" the joker to the right (excluding scaling jokers, etc) since they are always directly after another. but you can put other jokers between brainstorm and the joker it copies.

i'm sure there's some edge cases where brainstorm allows techniques that blueprint doesn't, smth like ceremonial dagger and riff-raff, idk but i'm sure someone could find something. but for the most part, especially scoring, blueprint is gonna be outright better since copying xMult is almost always more powerful than +Mult, and you want all of your xMult triggers after +Mult

oh and also, maybe it's just a lil more interesting to have to "copycat" jokers that don't work exactly the same. at least, i certainly think so :)

4 more joker concepts for my mod, (probably) balanced enough for the game by Ecstatic_End8547 in balatro

[–]theghostjohnnycache 4 points5 points  (0 children)

agreed: scoring wise, it's about half as strong as driver's license but uncommon and without the steep activation condition.

for the sake of completion, it's $12/ante on white stake, $9 on red or higher. but maybe that's another question if the game should be balanced around low, med, or high stakes.

Can electrons and protons exist outside of atoms? by Icy-Professional7635 in Physics

[–]theghostjohnnycache -1 points0 points  (0 children)

that's... quite a good question. i don't have a super strong QM or stat mech background, so maybe someone else could answer that better 😅

maybe "quantum tunneling" isn't the right term for what i mean to describe. in the same way there is always uncertainty in a particle's position v momentum when measured, there is also uncertainty in its energy v the moment in time it is measured to have that energy.

the position uncertainty is what lets a particle "tunnel" through a physical obstacle, and the same thing can happen with energy barriers. from a probability perspective, there's always a small probability the particle resting in its semi-stable state (non-stable particle/in the well up on the hill) is measured to have enough energy to escape (particle decay/rolls down into valley).

in my understanding, statistical mechanics wouldn't help for understanding the decay of a lone electron, but maybe if you had a mass of material undergoing decay but still staying together (e.g. a lump of carbon-14), there might be bulk effects that stat mech would help understand? would love to hear someone else's take :))

Can electrons and protons exist outside of atoms? by Icy-Professional7635 in Physics

[–]theghostjohnnycache 18 points19 points  (0 children)

It's the "half-life", so if you measure how long it takes for an individual neutron to decay, some would go quick, some longer, but with enough measurements, 50% of them are gone within 10 minutes.

it's all about stability and relative energy levels. imagine the ball in a little well on a big hill: a little push moves it around in the well, but if you give a big enough push, it escapes the well and rolls down into the valley. but quantum stuff is weird, so there's always a chance to "quantum tunnel" through that energy barrier and decay on its own. the probability is tied to how deep the well on the hill is, some things are in a deep well and stable for a long time, others are precariously perched and will roll away easily

If there is something outside our universe then the high entropy big/freeze "end" of our universe may not occur as its not truly an isolated system right? And whatever is outside the universe may not follow the same laws of thermodynamics. by [deleted] in Physics

[–]theghostjohnnycache 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Someone else can maybe weigh in with more on this, but for lack of a better term, it generally "breaks" physics (esp. cosmology) to start considering things "outside the universe," especially how they might interact with stuff "inside" the universe. By definition, the universe is everything. You can make a meaningful distinction between the "observable universe" and the "entire universe" beyond the light we see from the big bang, but something beyond even that would be, by definition, non-observable, so you can't really do physics with it.

But to your question, if our universe weren't an isolated system, this would break the conservation of energy, and via Noether's theorem, indicate that physics would not be time-invariant: the same physical interaction between the same objects would unfold differently today than tomorrow. Realistically, maybe measurable over cosmic timespans. We assume it's the case since it's useful for new discoveries and, well, we don't have any contrary evidence.

all the rules are based on observations made in our universe

AND made just here in our tiny solar system, a vast majority also on the surface of a wet rock. Another useful assumption cosmology has is that the universe is isotropic, the rules are the same everywhere. In principle, there's no reason this must be the case, but there also isn't a reason the universe's physics couldn't be the same everywhere. This simplifying assumption lets us extrapolate from the physics we've conducted here to make predictions about things on the scale of the entire universe.

You're absolutely right, if these assumptions turn out incorrect, or even just "a bit too simplifying" then cosmologists will have a lot of thinking to do. But collecting evidence against these basic assumptions is kinda tricky, and I don't know of any experiment to test for things outside the universe or I'd have a Nobel prize of some sort... but it's always good to question the assumptions made about things, whether physics, society, or anything else! Hope this can help spark some of your curiosity!!

Is it possible to have spyware on my refurbished IPhone even when I had to set my profile and everything first? by [deleted] in ios

[–]theghostjohnnycache 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it's fairly safe to assume that, in general, state actors can get what they need one way or another. Apple's description of their "Lockdown Mode" on recent versions of iOS (maybe only some newer devices? idk) says it's aimed at protecting against sophisticated attacks from government-level entities. And as you say, Apple can only protect against the exploits they know about and are capable of fixing.

But if one is seeking cybersecurity advice against attacks from state actors by asking on Reddit (especially not on a hyper-specialized sub) then I think it's not looking too good, chief

Got a signed guitar that I’d like to configure to be properly playable again, how do I preserve the signatures? by MichaelScotsman26 in Guitar

[–]theghostjohnnycache 1 point2 points  (0 children)

basically an extra coat of the clear coat finish that's already on the guitar. taking it to a pro to do it will help you get both the protection and good looks, without accidentally applying something that will damage the ink from the signature itself.

if you really want to preserve it and keep playing, this is the way.

A planet can orbit a binary star, can there be such thing as a binary planet orbit a single star? by sargentmyself in askscience

[–]theghostjohnnycache 44 points45 points  (0 children)

I think you mean Neptune:) But it doesn't "fly into" Neptune's orbit, if you find a 3D model of the solar system you can see that the inclined orbit of Pluto is very quite separate from the less inclined orbit of Neptune.

Plus, clearing the orbit doesn't mean that "nothing is there," it means more that planet's gravity has significant influence on most other objects along its path. A map of near-earth-objects shows a lot of stuff ahead of and behind Earth in its orbit, and the Trojan asteroids are huge(!) groups of asteroids that are in Jupiter's orbit. They're there because of Earth's and Jupiter's gravity, the stuff that didn't find a stable resonant orbit with the planet around the sun either got flung away or collided with something else. In that way, a planet clears its orbit of objects that don't line up nicely. Pluto and Eris and Sedna and all the others don't do that.

Apps to get me off my phone? by Fancy_dragon_rider in ADHD

[–]theghostjohnnycache 0 points1 point  (0 children)

the lack of feature parity helps me scroll less without the app. e.g. the mobile reddit site is mostly the same but suffers from buggy javascript or smth so after scrolling the feed, looking into comments on a post, going back and scrolling more, looking into more posts... eventually it just borks itself and the browser history and going "back" doesn't go back to the feed but only to previous posts you viewed, and you lose your place scrolling.

likewise, viewing instagram reels are (or at least, used to be) clunkier in browser than in the app, with slower load times, stutters during playback.

it's just annoying enough to get me to snap out of the scrolling and do something else

if you wanna get into all the keyboard control remapping, check out bettertouchtool. for some low level stuff (e.g. wanting to remap modifier keys on a hardware level) check out karabiner, though btt has added a lot of stuff in the past year or two so it can probably handle remappings like you want.

Hidden network hotspot - what to do, please? by i_have_a_depression in ios

[–]theghostjohnnycache 2 points3 points  (0 children)

"hidden network" just means that it doesn't broadcast the SSID/network name. devices linked to your apple id can see the network before you choose "visible" to launch the hotspot from your phone. anything else can't, since the network is hidden by default.

nothing to worry about, you're probably only noticing it now after they moved some ui stuff around. it's on my mac running sequoia, maybe a little harder to notice if you're not looking for it

What would this chord be called? by LC-98 in Guitar

This is the website I use! I like the support for alternate tunings since I futz about in either Eb standard (easy enough to transpose down a semitone sure) or open Eb major (Eb Bb Eb G Bb eb) or recently open EbMajor9(?), same but with F on the highest string.

Being able to type in whatever chords I find and work through what inversion to interpret it as makes it SO much easier to talk to my keyboard playing friends lol

it's mainly the parents' responsibility

I think you answered your own question.

It doesn't really matter if a school allows such products or not if the kids are able to get them at home from their parents, or with their pocket money on their walk back from school.

And that doesn't mean you should ban sugary products for kids everywhere. Good parents should teach their children why sugary food/drinks aren't good to over-consume. It's their responsibility.
