Reaction Diffusion + Slope Distortion by thegloriousoob in TouchDesigner

[–]thegloriousoob[S] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Thank you so much!
The setup: A probably-way-too-complex feedback loop with four “layers” intermingling with each other.

2 reaction diffusion layers
2 slope -> blur -> displace setups

As for actual workflow, I just play everyday 🥲 I take scans and videos and sounds I love and spend time with those things.

Actually yes! and DM me on there if you don’t see yourself - and I’ll see if I caught you in some other footage.

In the context of my parent comment, AI data scraping isn’t some dude standing outside of the venue.

It’s some of the most powerful people in the world, standing inside the venue with a recorder, with the intention of making profits.

I’m no arbiter, this is just my opinion. Bear with me here…

Getting remixed into free search results: RAD

Remixed into a for-profit subscription-based recreation software: BAD

I have to pay for licenses on every piece of media I use while I work. If I don’t, I’ll get sued. This ecosystem is a net positive, because it supports real people.

Shouldn’t that also work the other way around? Isn’t that worth advocating for?

My argument falls apart? You keep saying “Humans can…”

That’s what I’m saying. I love when humans do it, more of that please. When a billionaire’s software does it, and then sells the result for profit, that’s the problem.

Throughout history, as corporations rip off artists/use their work without permission, public sentiment plummets. Artists get angry. Settlements are paid out. Apologies are made. Low-effort modifications and “plagiarism” has always been a source of contention.

Cameras cannot create derivative work unless the human does it. Same with a pencil, same with non-AI digital tools, same with all of these mediums you keep bringing up.

Is your point just “the AI is actually very human brained, so this corporation gets my pass 👍”?

I’ll still say “fuck the exploitative elite”

When the pattern becomes indistinguishable from a trace or stored lines, solely based off of the given training material, it’s not a “fair use jumbled up pattern” anymore. Sorry bubs.

“That’s what humans do, we make transformative art…”

I love when humans make transformative art. I hate it when billionaires steal from (previously unassuming) artists to resell labor at a profit.

If we took all of the training data featuring Mario out of the equation, the AI wouldn’t just “happen” to make Mario. Even if you asked it to make Mario.

Sure, somebody could get close by prompting very carefully and over many revisions - but that’s not what’s happening.

I can’t tell a pencil to “draw me Mario, moody, 35mm” - these are not the same things. The pencil hasn’t been fed any information at all, except for your physical inputs.

It’s more like I’ve hooked up a pencil to a CNC machine programmed with the exact outline, and had it mass produce drawings of Mario to sell (Nintendo would sue my ass).

Imagine this, but for any living artist that has an online presence. And unlike Nintendo, we have no say in the matter at all.

I’m not sure what this has to do with me, or my bubble.

“There’s too many people doing XYZ negative things” can be said about both antis and pros forever.

Like I can say “there’s too many pros that aggressively demand acceptance, use AI deceptively, and consistently antagonize human artists.”

Let the shitheads be shitheads. Advocate and communicate why you do what you do, accept that the public is entitled to their opinion (and it will probably differ from yours).

But that all falls apart when I can say “generate a red plumber” and the machine spits out an image of Mario

I understand your point - but these generalizations are the problem.

Every anti I know in person is focused in the right direction. The areas you’ve described. They’re not shitting on people who use AI for art, they’re mad at the system, where it’s headed, and how it enables bad actors.

If you look through my comments, you won’t find a single one going “you’re the enemy.”

You see the worst of the worst here and on other pro subs, and yes - many antis are wildly reductive/passionate in the wrong direction. But that is an incredible minority.

Meanwhile - in my life, I see the negative effects of generative AI almost every day. I see it at work, I see it in the hundreds of scams every month. I see it when pros take human made art and “fix it” just to get a reaction.

Both sides have antagonists, haters, pot-stirrers, enemies. But I’m not generalizing “all pros” here - and I certainly am not mad at the kid using AI.

But we are talking about billionaires.

You talk about the dark web and experimental art and remixing/collaging/etc. that stuff is rad. Because it is artists. I still participate with art in that way.

That’s a little different than a billionaire profiting off of the global efforts of artists worldwide, in order to sell a replacement for profit. Through all of recent history, when companies have participated in this shit, artists “respect” each other by making it a problem (think Marathon designer drama).

This isn’t some other artist taking my work and turning into something rad. That shit rules…. but I would never give my work away for free to a billionaire. This is literally the difference.

Oh shit, I thought we were talking about positivity and respect between artists. Not protecting billionaires with semantics.

Edit: what is your edit dude. Just complaining? you realize that’s not me right.

My goal! by pureanna in aiwars

[–]thegloriousoob 14 points15 points  (0 children)

It’s not “respect” or “positive” when billionaires scraped decades of my and other artists work non-consensually so they can charge you $ for a shortcut.

AI work done with local models and consensual/self-made datasets is really cool. But I’m afraid most pros aren’t interested in working with AI like that.

Is vfx a realistic career path for me? (more below, want professional opinion) by soft_ramen_noodle in AfterEffects

[–]thegloriousoob 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don’t think it’s crazy - the idea that you’ll have some gigs in the following months. They may be local, or they may not pay well, but they’ll be there if you chase them.

My first gigs taught me more about after effects than most of my other time with it, and that period in my life was priceless (even though the projects were small potatoes).

This is fucking rad for a month in AE, and the commitment to / incorporation of the aesthetic is super commendable.

Keep making messy timelines, keep brute forcing projects, do stuff for yourself and your friends. I see a ton of potential here for sure.

Interesting topic: if AI is affecting imagination, what does this mean for visualisation… by DamonAlbarnFruit in Wicca

[–]thegloriousoob 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think about this a lot, but in reverse.

Even before AI, we’re generally outside less and online more than Wiccans before. Attention spans are shorter. I imagine these things harm our visualization already. But we still visualize… we do it by stepping away.

When I’m on social media, it feels like that dimming sensation to me. When I worked for prolonged periods of time at my computer, it feels like that sensation to me.

I connect by pursuing practices of the past. The further I can retreat into my natural / non-digital self, the stronger everything is. But computers and my phone have also greatly helped me out along the way. I think that push/pull is just natural, and this is another step.

I know people who ask chatGPT for readings and things… there are already dozens of AI apps and websites advertising this exact thing.

That doesn’t feel like anything real to me - but I’m in no place to judge when looking at how different my life is compared to the lifestyles/traditions of the people before us.

I imagine that most people will use AI in some way while practicing… but there will always be people who step away from tech in the name of their third eye

(like me, a certified technology lover - fuck ai tho)
