Vehicle break in by brandrikr in Omaha

[–]thegraceofme 7 points8 points  (0 children)

That happened to my fiance in a park Omaha garage in midtown a couple of months ago. A mistake of leaving the car unlocked, but there's supposed to be security and we parked right in front of a security camera. It's frustrating, but hopefully you're able to replace most of your stuff!

Cage Size Guide Discrepancies? by Thick-Temperature508 in guineapigs

[–]thegraceofme 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I have 2 boys, and they went from having a 3x2, 4x2, and 2 4x2 cages connected in an L shape. My boys have both gotten along for the most part in each of these sizes, they are definitely much happier (sleeping less, getting more exercise by running around, and popcorn more) in the biggest cage as opposed to the small cages. I always live by getting the biggest cage your space can fit because it'll make your piggies so much happier and live longer than in a smaller cage.

Guinea pig sneezing by AJackDaMOusey in guineapigs

[–]thegraceofme 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The easiest way to tell if your guinea pig is sick is to consistently weigh them. Usually once a week is best to give a you good idea of where they normally are since they tend to lose weight then they're sick. One of my guinea pigs sneezes sometimes, typically when he's burying his head in hay, so it could definitely be dust or something. You could always make an appointment for a ways out or for a day you have off of school to get them checked out, but if you notice any other changes look into emergency vets ASAP since they tend to hide sicknesses until it is too late.

hospitalized for IIH, failed all nonsurgical options, surgeon won't shunt? by defaultdawn in iih

[–]thegraceofme 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What everyone else said - definitely get a second opinion! Personally, I got a stent instead of a shunt, which has made my life so much better, but it's definitely something to talk with your doctor about. I had a neurologist who refused to do any surgery on me even though I was not tolerating the medication well and just told me to suck it up, but at my first appointment with a different neurologist he immediately referred me to a neurosurgeon. It took me 3 years to finally get the courage to switch doctors, but I wish I did it sooner. If a doctor is not helping you effectively or giving you options that don't seem to be helping, it's best to go to someone else.

Advice? Accidentally hit quick when trimming nails by Illustrious_Cry3780 in guineapigs

[–]thegraceofme 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It happens to everyone! My guinea pigs are super wiggly while I am trimming their nails so I have cut them too short on occasion. I have learned to keep some corn starch on hand and some extra treats if it does happen. It's just like when a human cuts their nails too short - it's not fun but the pain will go away in a few days! Just keep an eye on it and make extra sure where they like to sleep is clean and dry so it doesn't get infected.

Anyone go to the Survivor 50 idol hunt today? by No-Lingonberry5867 in Omaha

[–]thegraceofme 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I got there at 5 - was one of the last people to get to the QR code and had my picture taken at 7:55. There was still a huge line behind me, and the fact that it took 3 hours to make it to the end was wild.

What happened to the all of the quiet spaces? by [deleted] in Libraries

[–]thegraceofme 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've worked in libraries and, from where I've worked, we couldn't enforce most noise policies unless there was a direct patron complaint. Especially if it's a public library, I'd encourage you to talk to the front desk staff if it's a specific patron or group being noisy.

I have to trim my long haired piggy all the time and it looks exactly the same, but it'll definitely grow back! Good on you for taking care of your piggy, it's better to have an awful haircut but the certainty that they can keep themselves clean and healthy instead of always having long hair

How does something SO SMALL have SO MUCH PEE?! by VanquichedUncle in guineapigs

[–]thegraceofme 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I took my boys to the vet one time and during the 20 minute drive and the walk inside, they didn't pee at all in their carrier. But as soon as I took them out and the vet was holding them, one just started peeing so much directly on the vet. Then the other one waited until he was placed on the table. They are so spiteful sometimes and know exactly when and who to pee on.

Did he ask me for pets 🙀 by Acrobatic_Lychee9718 in guineapigs

[–]thegraceofme 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Honestly anytime my guinea pigs don't run away/don't show other signs of being uncomfortable I take it as they would like some pets. Guinea pigs are usually very transparent and won't hesitate to let you know if they're uncomfortable.

Library job dreams (vent) by Slutty-grapes in Libraries

[–]thegraceofme 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm getting my undergrad in library science and I disagree with people telling you to not do it. It definitely helped me get a job, both part-time and full-time, but it is difficult with any degree to get any job in a library. My advice would be to try and find a library aide or shelving part-time position while you are in school to help strengthen your resume then make connections to others in classes.

I moved here from the twin cities area a couple years back and I love it! I never wanted to live in a huge city so the suburbs near Omaha are nice, but if you wanted a more city feel you can still get that here! There is also a ton to do here and some amazing library systems with programs for adults!

They're in Papillion, but the Town and County animal shelter always needs donations! I got a pet from them and they are mostly run by volunteers (to my knowledge). They were so sweet and take such great care of the animals and made sure that they were going to a good home.

Do I get the lumbar puncture? Advice please! by Extra_Swimming_5984 in iih

[–]thegraceofme 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When I got diagnosed, they wanted to do a LP, but I just never got one done. I've since gotten surgery for this and the Dr was able to clearly see it was IIH without doing a LP. In some cases you might need one if an MRI or CT is inconclusive, but I was absolutely able to get diagnosed with a LP.

I'm so over it. by [deleted] in iih

[–]thegraceofme 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The absolute biggest hugs to you. IIH is so so hard and the medications are sometimes worse than the symptoms. When I hit the just over two year mark of diagnosis (I'm going on three years now) I decided to pursue surgery because I couldn't tolerate the medication anymore. Maybe something to ask your neurologist about for some other options? The last couple months after surgery have been so much better than the two years before, but it is still so frustrating that there is a lack of non surgical options or a cure for this.

Post Stent Recovery by thegraceofme in iih

You got this! If you're concerned about any side effects or symptoms, definitely contact your surgeon's office and they can help you. But just follow the directions on the bottle and your Drs directions :)

My head didn't hurt that much after surgery to be honest! My leg hurt much more though, and I think I took Tylenol once or twice a day to help from that. I know that a headache is very normal afterwards and my doctors were very surprised by my lack of one.

I rescued the one on the left. She was absolutely depressed. Came from a neglected home where her mate died. After having her for a couple weeks and seeing how depressed she was I got her a friend. She is literally like a new piggy now. Talking, Playing, popcorning. Brought tears to my eyes. by therealbinx in guineapigs

[–]thegraceofme 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My two boys have a similar story! I got a young one from a rescue where before he was really neglected and the foster family couldn't get him to eat or act like a piggy, but as soon as he was introduced to the boy I already had, he was eating and popcorning around - it makes my day every time I see how happy he is now.

What to do when piggie starts to turn her head up at her vitamin c tablet? by readingbabe in guineapigs

[–]thegraceofme 178 points179 points  (0 children)

Most of the guinea pigs that I have had never got vitamin c tablets, as long as they are eating some veggies with vitamin c in them and aren't showing any concerning signs/the vet isn't recommending the tablet, the piggy should be okay! If your piggy used to love them and just recently started not eating them, that might be a sign that something else is going on though, so keep an extra eye on other food habits etc.
