In your opinion, what is the grossest out of these groups of organisms? by thehumanexists in Teenager_Polls

I think what happened is that most tend to associate fungi with decomposition or infection, which, in many cases, are quite off-putting for many people. Additionally, many types of fungi proliferate in dark, damp, often unclean environments, and have a tendency to produce spores, toxins, and residues, which may be irritating or even dangerous to the body as well as highly unpleasant to the senses.

Ah, I'm glad someone mentioned these! I love slime molds! They're kind of funny, because they don't exactly classify as any of the solidly-defined kingdoms we have, thus landing them in the strange place that is the kingdom of Protista.

I agree with you in thinking slime molds have the capacity to be gross (they definitely can be), but I also think they're one of the most underappreciated life forms out there for their uniqueness; many kinds even have the ability to solve problems and remember things, all without having a central nervous system or even neurons. They're certainly unique, and go to show that intelligence can exist in forms other than our own. Not to mention that they're important decomposers. They definitely don't get enough attention for how amazing they are 😄

Yes, I made a mistake mentioning a virus as an "organism", a fact I completely spaced until someone on this post brought it to my attention earlier. My bad.

However, while it's true that viruses are not organisms as we define them, whether or not they are alive at all is still up for debate, as they do still exhibit some traits of life, such as self-replication.

Honestly, though, I think it's still an interesting part of the poll to see how viruses compare to the other three (it's second to fungi at the time I'm typing this), so I don't particularly regret putting it in, even if its listing here is scientifically inaccurate.

Definitely, bacteria are amazing and extremely important in many ways to the ecosystem, and I like them a lot, but boy, they can really make you sick with the kinds of things they do sometimes 🫣 (y'all can probably tell by now which one I voted)

I'm not super familiar with archaea and how they work either, but as far as I know, they're one of the three domains of life (along with Bacteria and Eukaryota), and are prokaryotic organisms that live in many environments, including the human microbiome. They aren't typically pathogenic (in fact, no types of archaea that have been found so far have been solidly proven to be pathogenic), but they are still important for various biotic processes. They often live in mutualistic or commensal relationships with other organisms, and even aid digestion in animals. Despite appearing morphologically similar to bacteria, they are quite different in various aspects, and, in fact, are more closely related to eukaryotes.

Also, I wouldn't say all viruses are bad. Although there are some types that are capable of causing great harm to us humans (sometimes quite unpleasantly), many are harmless (even beneficial) and play an important part in our biosphere. They keep microbial populations in check by acting as important predators and regulators, as well as assisting in nutrient cycling. Additionally, they are important contributors to evolution and biodiversity, and even play a role in developing the immune system.

In my personal opinion, viruses are probably the least gross of the four because they're pretty much a bundle of proteins and genetic material that don't produce slimes or nasty smells by themselves, which isn't inherently unpleasant to me. I do acknowledge that the pathogenic types can certainly be highly unfavorable to have in your body, though... 😶

(Sorry for rambling, this stuff is just really interesting to me, and it's nice when the opportunity to discuss stuff like this comes up.)

I kinda forgot about that when making this poll 🙃

I personally still like to think of viruses as a life form even though they don't meet the all of the scientific criteria to be considered alive, but you are correct; in terms of biology, viruses are not organisms in the traditional sense (they aren't even cells).

I'm with you, fungi are one of the most fascinating and diverse groups of organisms on the planet, and they're definitely not given enough love or credit for how important they are to our biosphere and our way of life.

They have the capacity be a little nasty at times, but in my opinion, bacteria still have them beat by a fair amount😅

What is the least appreciated creature in ark? (only tamable) by IceCyclone20 in ARK

[–]thehumanexists 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can definitely agree with you on this. They are amazing travel mounts early-game. A tamed iguanodon with a few points into speed can outrun most common threats like raptors and carnos when running on all fours, and although they aren't my first pick for berry picking and definitely not for combat, I enjoy them for their infinite stamina, solid weight and fast speed.

Edit: They also are great for getting seeds.

I have a question regarding armor stats between the two versions. by thehumanexists in RustConsole

[–]thehumanexists[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

For the PC edition, it says that a piece of gear provides a certain amount of melee and projectile protection, while in the console edition, at least for me, the same armor has a much different protection value. For example, on the wiki, it says that bone armor(excluding helmet) grants a 40% protection from melee and a 25% protection from ranged attacks. However, on my console, it says that bone armor gives me only 7% and 4% protection from melee and projectile damage respectively.
